The Brief:

It’s time for a blast to the Past! We all began somewhere. The instant our inner creative fires were lit, through stress, through fatigue and through many other hardships, as artisans, we endured to make it to where we are today. But if we look at our past works, we laugh, we cry, we blush, we deny, and/or sometimes, we even start to wonder how something so awful could have gotten us so far. However, Artisans, now we have a chance to go back into our pasts and use our most current and up-to-date skills to bring our old art into the future! In 2007, let us remind ourselves how far we have come by taking part in this month's commemorative topic: Extreme Makeovers!!

In Brief:

3D Game Art Challenge - Go back in time, take a game model you made, and use your most current
and up-to-date skills to give it an extreme makeover!

Concept Game Art Challenge - Go back in time and take a 1996 or earlier existing game character (not
yours), and perform and extreme makeover on it!

Universal restrictions:
(applies to both 3d and concept challenge)

- The Spirit of the original design should show in your new design.
- Eye color, hair color, gender, age race and species cannot be changed.
- All characters must be humanoid. Spiders, robots, animals, etc are not permitted.

3D Challenge Specifics

Take an old game model you personally "completed" (complete with textures) in the past, and revise it. Your old model may not be a high poly model or have been intended for normal map use. Basically, in theory, anything you made before early 2006 should be fine. Remember, your character still has to keep his or her basic traits (see universal restrictions above).

For those who have absolutely nothing pre-2006, please contact either - FredH - or Marcus.

The Constraints:
A maximum of 5000 tris
1 1024x1024 diffuse
1 1024x1024 normal
1 1024x1024 transparency
1 1024x1024 specular
1 1024x1024 emissive
For each 1024, you may break it down into smaller units. Example:
4 512x512 diffuse
4 512x512 normal
4 512x512 transparency
4 512x512 specular
4 512x512 emissive
A pedestal (not floor) may be included. This pedestal can use unlimited polies and texture sheets but
can contain nothing for your character to pick up and use.
2-sided polies with two separate uv channels are permitted.
Joint entries are allowed! Teams of two maximum. One must be a concept artist and he can not touch
anything 3d. Additionally, Concept artists can not help with a models textures and scene environments.
He must only create the concepts, nothing else.
Read Submissions for exact specs on submission requirements.

The Judging:
Incomplete entries can still be submitted, but they will not be judged.
Judging is based on, but not limited to, the following:
- Difference between your past and new model
- Character's personality and charm
- Technical difficulty
- Silhouette

Concept Challenge Specifics

Take an already existing game character before the year 1996 (example, mario, Laura Croft, Prince of Persia) and give him or her a new look and feel. Remember, your character still has to keep his or her basic traits (see universal restrictions above).

Important: You may not use a character that someone else has chosen.

The Deliverables:
A final illustrated concept of your revisded character in an interesting pose.

angles of your character. Choices include: Front, right, left, perspective, and back view
A minimum of 8 black & white or single color (example light to dark blue etc) initial rough draft thumbnail
sketches.
Joint entries for this concept art challenge are prohibited.

The Judging:
Incomplete entries can still be submitted, but they will not be judged.

- How well you make a revision without totally loosing your character's original personality and charm
- Technical difficulty
