What is the most exciting and rewarding part about being a game artist? |
Working
in games is rewarding because not only do you get to create game
content, you also get to make decisions that contribute to the
game you are making (could just be the company I'm at). It is
not the most glorious thing in the world and everything you make
will probably be forgotten in 5 years, but it is fun and the people
you work with are some of the coolest people you will probably
ever meet :) |
Why did you enter the Dominance War and if you could, would you recommend similar 3d game contests to friends/aspiring artists? Why or Why not? |
I entered to represent polycount. I also entered to compete with
other talented game artists. I knew there were going to be some
really good entries showing up so it was guaranteed to be a really
fun contest. In comps like these, you really get to push yourself
and improve, and to me, that is really fun. Seeing other people's
work being created while you are busy at work with your own entry
is very inspiring. Another reason was to possibly inspire and
push others to improve their work. Both aspiring and seasoned
artists can learn from these events, and at the same time they
can push and inspire others. I would most definitely recommend
anyone and everyone to enter these types of contests. |

What would be your advice for aspiring game artists out there? What type of training do you think would be helpful in becoming a successful game artist? |

The most obvious answer is to gain a background in more traditional methods. This way, you gain a better understanding of good art, are able to communicate ideas visually, and are able to be more than just a modeling monkey. Of course, you need to like games and have an open mind to new technology. The way games are made changes all the time so you constantly have to learn new things to stay ahead. Fortunately, you don't have to be the most badass character modeler to have a good job. Making games is a team effort and there are always other areas and other ways in which you can contribute to the game. Skill is important, but attitude is probably the single most important trait in this field, it¡¯s a great plus if you are easy to work with.
