What's your secret to your apparent success? |

I dont think I am successful in the common sense of the word. Success for me is a state of mind. It's like receiving complements - it is good but it fades fast and becomes very addictive. I am constantly dragged down by my own goals; therefore, I am never successful. Success is a constant struggle, not a battle. No matter how much I have achieved, I always feel like that was not exactly what I wanted. So I end up looking for something that I cannot do and see if that is maybe what I am after.

Do you like being a game artist? Why? |

It is a great job. Lots of intersting people. For me, a job is always a job. The important thing is that you enjoy doing it! The ideals of the projects I am working on are very important and play a huge part in making this an enjoying experience, but sometimes, I feel a bit deslocated from the current gaming ideology. I am still trying to find my real passion but working on games is by far, one of the best job I ever had. All this said, I look forward getting back into them.

Why did you enter the Dominance War? and if you could, would you recommend similar 3d game contests to friends/aspiring artists? Why or Why not? |

It's a funny story; I decided to concept something for fun. Unfortunately, this fun fried my videocard because I used way too many polygons. I bought a new card for $200 because I thought the idea was good and it would be fun to create. Like everyone else, I had high ideals. Placing in the top15 was my ultimate goal and this pushed me to try my very best. Win or Lose, I would definitely recommend joining art contests. They are a great way to learn techniques, polish skills, exercise your creativity and seriously challenge yourself as an artist. On the other hand, if you are an aspiring artist, it is a good way to see how professionals work.

What would be your advice for aspiring game artists out there? What type of training do you think would be helpful in becoming a successful game artist? |

Techniques are getting easier everyday, so, the skill bar is constantly being raised. Nowadays, if you want to be a game artist, you need a good taste for art and you need to posses good skills in what you are do. Joining contests is always a good idea. Additionally, studying a bit of everything would help broaden your artistic skills. For training, I think producing different things in all shapes, sizes, materials and media... until you find yourself, is a good plan.
If you are already an experienced 3d artist and want to break into the game industry, send resumes and portfolios with stuff you like to do and most importantly, do what you are good at! Just because everyone is a character modeler does not mean you have to be one as well. There are lots of other positions to be filled. Simply do what you are passionate about, someone out there will always like it.

Well, I also love the rubish songs I compose with my guitar:)
I have some thoughts to share about game technology. Soon, we will be playing games that look much better than the rendered materials we have today. The game industry is very profitable and as such, it tends to grow exponentially. The desire to simplify tedious time consuming tasks and slow processing calculations that industry demands is generating a new trend of technology. Today, we can easily see toy story in real time and soon, we could also see final fantasy in real time. Before, everyone needed a render farm to produce the details found in past movies and trailer clips, but as technology advances, so must its interface. Where before we could get away with complicated programs to run several machines, today, simpler controls are needed for one controller in mind; an artist. Software is now being developed with the help of artists themselves and they know what and how to improve the interface since they themselves are the creators. The line between production and realtime is getting more and more blurry. As such, artists in the middle of it all will taste either the sweet or bitter taste of our own choices.
