Congratulations!

I think it's worth noting here that 3 out of the first 4 top votes did not use normal maps. Maybe, just maybe, they can actually make lowpoly models look worse. Something to consider next time :) .

Joey Spijkers hmm interesting I wouldnt say worst, think a cavity or AO map certainly helps the diffuse map, normal map could be used to make and bake em.Or just some people are shit hot at making textures from hand.

One question do you get a red star for just entering?

FredH

shadowmonkey, yes, everyone gets a red star for just entering:)

Congrats! to the winners! Great works!
It's rather disappointing for me, darn! foiled again :(
I guess I need to make a cleaner work next time.
I'll also have to brush up my rigging and posing skill :paper:

Don't be down on yourself, Satya - you were in the top 4 and well deserved to be! But yes, a stronger pose would be the only improvement I could think of - the model and the texturing were certainly top-notch.

Joey - I certainly agree with you about the models not needing normal maps. In fact, in the top 5, only the QuiwiMan's Mario/Peach entry had one (and I have to confess, I personally docked ranking from them for having a normal map - it didn't improve the model and made it feel (to me) less accurate to the characters... I mean, other traditioanlly next-gen characters not having a normal map but Mario does? What's wrong with that picture? :D)

All three top winners were in my top 3 too: Congrats to all... but I especially want to give a pat on the back to Jacque for the really super job in the layout and composition of the whole final sheet. Really great details like that add to a piece immensely, especially when other models and textures are at a similar level of professionalism. :thumb:

Congratz guys! Well deserved top 3! I personally think yours turned out great as well, Satya.

I guess I shouldn't have used a normal map. (Walrus- Pipboy-freeman used a normal map as well) but I totally agree with you, really changed the look of them for the worse. I still have a ton to learn.
Oh well, its not necessarily a bad thing when experiments fail, I just know now that that particular style doesn't turn out so good. (or maybe it would in the hands of a more capable Artist!)

The QiwiMan: I think your entry was actually the cutest one. Anyhow, congrats to the winners, well done:thumb: and congrats to everybody who finished. These minis are for fun and I certainly enjoyed watching the art you Artisans produced.:D

In fact, in the top 5, only the QuiwiMan's Mario/Peach entry had one (and I have to confess, I personally docked ranking from them for having a normal map).Same here. I don't want to sound like I'm lecturing people who obviously did better than I did in this competition, but I don't think there's a single normal mapped entry between them that wouldn't have been better if it were just diffuse mapped. And that's just comparing side-by-side rendering, not the amount of skill that it takes to properly make a highpoly and bake it down!

Just sayin', dem kids these days...

Guess who's going to make a diffuse only Comicon entry ;)

Thanks, Walrus! I'll do better next time.
Thanks QiwiMan, your entry was one of my favorite as well.

I think the matter of using normal map or not lies on what you're making, and how many tris available. Normal map can sometimes exaggerate corners when there's just too little tris applied, I think.
Let's say a simple design 3000 of tris available might look better with normal maps, but might not look good on a more complex designs that 'push' the tri usage to the limit. But Qiwiman is bold enough to make two characters out of 3000 tris:thumb:
On a complex design it's wiser to trick the eyes with shading painted directly on the diffuse rather than relying on the lighting and normal manipulation.

Thats a really good point Satya, I've never really thought of it that way before. Makes sense! :)

..man, really good feedback, I just wish I got this feedback before I submitted! :p

O well, Comicon, here I come! :D
