View Full Version : Big barbaric warrior
God, I really need to get a job that involves doing art. After 13 days of consecutive workdays, I finally got some time to do some digital sculpting.
While I should finish my high-tech-ninja-which-isn't-a-ninja-anymore, I really felt I needed to do some human anatomy. It is sort of meditative for me, and calms me down. While anatomy isn't one of my strongest sides it's something I enjoy doing immensely, and there are some glaring things I should fix on this character before proceeding, but I need to work on the gear and clothing as I've been staring myself blind on the anatomy.
A barbaric warrior, of sorts. Will probably give him a furry loincloth, of sorts, and a big weapon, of sorts, which he can hold in those sausage fingers of his. Not worrying about the anatomy from the knees down as he'll be wearing boots. Of sorts.
(As usual Arshlevon's baseman basemesh, and Vidar Rapp's ZBrush materials.)

Looks like an awesome start. I love the sculpting. Looking forward to all the extra stuff you add to him :D.

The forearms and thighs.... GOOD GOD!!! What is he eating for breakfast? "Honey Nut Steroid-O"'s. I exercise 2.5 hours a day & can't get like that. Looks like his leg swallowed a kitten. :)
Seriously though, I don't see why he couldn't still be a ninja - high tech or otherwise. They're just assassins for hire. All of the skill of a samurai. None of the honor. Forgetting what you see in the movies, I'd think that a modern or future ninja wouldn't necessarily have to dress the way they did 400 years ago? Tradition is tradition, but a hit is a hit. Whatever gets the job done.
The big belt buckle kinda makes him look like a pro wrestler though, which might not be a bad idea.
EDIT>> The calf muscle should hang down a bit on the inside of the leg. Its never 100% parallel to the ground.
EDIT 2>> The knees need to be pulled up a bit higher, I think.
Yeah, you won't get this big without regular good ol' steroid shots. I toyed with the idea of making him a more regular, heavy guy, but I have always wanted to make a Conan-esque barbaric warrior guy so opted for the more ridiculous body builder type.
The championship belt likeness was a concern from the start, but I decided to run with it non the less. It's a challenge, and I'm fairly confident that when all the pieces are in place. Such as the fur diapers, amour, boots, etc, it will look less like a wrestler. If not, I'll replace the belt buckle with something else :)

sculpt is looking good man!
I agree about the muscles above the knee, possibly a tad to pronounced. Skin would stretch and still keep those form being that defined.
Makes me wanna remake HE-MAN.
Beauty Model!
The only thing that caught my eye on was his elbow placement looks to be favoring his forearm. I'm not a modeler, so take my critique with a grain of salt.
Other than that, very sweet. Very! :)

Thanks for the good crits :) I made his leg muscles less pronounced, and pushed the elbow up a bit. I still have to tweak the muscles around that area, though, as they are diverting a bit too much from reality.
Had time last night to do some more work. Added a... skirt? And started work on his soft leather boots.
Also, I went back to Silo2 and did tried some topology work in there, and I take back what I've said before about performance. Don't know what I did before, but now it runs like a charm, and everything is well again :thumb: (Edit: Hehe, actually I do know what I did. Upgraded to a high end dual core CPU and 4 GB of RAM.. Don't know how I could have forgot, as big a hole it burned into my tiny wallet..)

looks great!
the upper back/neck looks a off (the deep hole) and i think you could define his collar-bone a bit more by pushing in the stuff underneath it. (there are barely muscles there, so it should stick out a bit more)
i hope it helps and keep it up!
love the "dumb yet powerfull" look on his face :D

nice, I was worried about his ankles before but now that you have boots on him it doesn't bother me now. Actually they look great. You really got a hold on your understanding of anatomy. The thing I would suggest, since your character is a warrior, is giving him a lot of scars, to show that he's seen battle before. Scars like deep cuts that have never quiet healed to burn marks.
I'd also suggest, when you get to texture this guy. Looking at other "Warrior" Types. Like Kratos. Heres some images for hair types and texture types.

Japhir, thanks for the crits, I'll have another look at the anatomy in general. I do want it to be fairly anatomically accurate, but some minor things will be sacrified for the sake of time, because they won't really make a difference as a normal map on a low polygon model :)
Thunder Bunny, good crits :) I'm saving the "scarring pass" for one of the last things I do. Going to put them in an own layer on the last subdivision level. Unfortunately with ZBrush 3 you can only have layers on one subdivision level. This is one area where Mudbox trumps ZBrush.
Good references by the way :)
this looks really good, Im not sure whats going on with his top lip. it looks like is pushed back and doesnt have the usual surrounding muscles of the mouth, its hard to see though as this is still wip and not showing every angle. theres a good thread on mouth anatomy at http://www.theartofanatomy.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=19
dont know if you want to check that out.
Also the back of the neck looks strange with that diamond shaped indetation, it doesnt look like it is being formed naturally by the muscles.
Yeah, the face is going to get a few more passes. I've blocked in the main features, and I'll probably going over the mouth area a bit further.
Also started work on some of his gear. A kind of harness that will attach to his belt, and keep a piece of armour on one of his shoulders. Have to do some old fashioned polygon/SubD modeling for this, and it's something I was never good at and usually avoid when I can.. Roughing it in, will bring it into ZBrush when I'm done and add any seams and such.
[EDIT] Oh and thanks for the link. Plenty of meaty information there :)
Started work on the axe tonight, and I'm nearly done with the high poly version. Screengrab from ZBrush and then composed (obviously) in Photoshop. Some unnecessary eye-candy, but what the hell.. I was in a blue mood :p

Simple, yet killer. :thumb:
Nice wood grain sculpting too.
Thank you :)
Oh, and the SubD version of the head before going into ZBrush. No need to show the wrapping and the wood as they were just primitive shapes. The head was the tricky one, of course, what with the holes.
I still dislike traditional modeling..

yo east!
nice model and that weapon is NICE. how'd you get the wood grain in there? hand sculpted? i feel you on disliking traditional modeling, but you seem to have a pretty solid handle on it.
the warrior's coming along nicely too, although i think his head is a few steps behind everything else. it seems a bit too lumpy overall, i think smoothing some parts down might help. keep using those refs! keep it uupppp

Very cool axe and that muscle definition is great, not to keen about he face though. Just my opinion i guess
