Hey peeps,
I'm just about to start sending round my showreel to employers, but I wanted to run it past you guys first.

http://www.vimeo.com/5894395

I'm aiming for a character modelling job, although I've heard they're pretty hard to come by, and to be honest, looking at a lot of work round here, I still think i've got a way to go yet. Do you reckon I should start working on some environmental stuff, to give myself a better chance of getting into the industry, or just plough on with the character stuff till i'm good enough.

Also any crits on the showreel itself would be wicked. I've got a few more pieces I could stick on it, but I kinda wanted to keep it short n sweet.

Thanks in advance :D

Jack

Your concepts and sculpts are pretty good! I would keep at it, you obviously have talent.

I think you need quite a bit more content, and maybe show more wireframes, and texture sheets (I really want to get a sense of what you did with how much).

I get the feeling you weren't really concentrating on landing a videogame gig either. I would completely ditch the animating if I were you. It's not that you're bad at it, it's just that your modelling is a LOT more impressive (I really didn't see much texturework in your reel).

Lastly, you probably don't even need a reel. Just post up a bunch of images.

thanks so much Jacque, sorry I didnt reply sooner.
I think you're right about the showreel, I'm gonna start working on some new characters, and completely finish them with specular, diffuse and normal maps.
Hopefully that'll be enough to net me a character job. :)

Really Nice reel,

The only thing I saw in the video that bothered me a bit was the lack of brightness and one of the turn arounds was lop sided like you didn't care about it's angle (minor thing). But I am sure you are definately putting 100% of effort into it, it might just be something you looked over.

That's all.

Again super cool stuff I agree with JacqueChoi about the lack of textures.

nice modeling :) I agree that just a bunch of images would work as well, but it never hurts to have a reel; some people prefer it. I would also suggest you light your models just a tad different by keeping what have now and then adding a rim light to lighten up the sides of the models, the sides right now are a bit dark and hard to see the details and adding another light would bring a bit more depth into your renders.

Here's a good explanation of what I'm talking about. http://www.3drender.com/light/3point.html

Of and I agree with the textures :) Good work so far though, you have talent

Not bad, a good start. I liked the animation and facial expressions as they're something you don't see in a lot of modeling reels, however I wouldn't open with the animation, maybe put it after the turnaround. The sculpts look good but you need more models that go the full distance, textures and bakes and whatnot. It sounds like you're going to be doing this, so good luck. Update when that's done.
