Well since most of our artists were hit with bad work schedules or family events that kept them from finishing, The Comicon Challenge will extend to one extra week so that they might have a chance to finish. At the end of the day it's about the quality of the art that finishes and the amount of people who make it to that finish line. Sometimes finishing one competition might aid you in courage to finish another.

Thanks for the support guys and gals and enjoy your extra week!

Am I the only one that's sick and tried of all the "late comers" getting an extra week to finish their work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Final Deadline extensions are one thing, but not having ENTRY DEADLINES really messes the whole competition for all the people that worked really hard to finish! There are people still entering TODAY, with what should have been five days to go!!!!!! I mean the over all goal is to win; not having the time to finish means you lose. It's like giving an athlete a head start in the Olympics cause he's slower than the other guys!

I'm calling shenanigans on this one, and I'm not happy about it

Mrpearlzildjian

@Gochillis

Isn't that a little selfish? I understand deadlines are usually concrete, and at the very least motivate you to bust your ass to at-least get it done, but things come up and life happens. I had just started my character, and my Grandmother died, which set me back a whole week since I had to travel 800 miles to go to her funeral. He stated it pretty clearly at the top that a lot of artists had things happen with them and their families, I don't think it's too harsh to the other artists who are already done or close to it to extend it, at least you get time to polish it up all nice and make it a top entry right?

Gochillis: your not alone. The thing is, it's tradition, there hasn't been a single comp that hasn't had etra time given. So, to keep with tradition, this happens.

Mrpearlzildjian: here is the thing, you work your butt off to finish on time, the guy next to you does not. Then, he is given extra time so he can finish too. No matter how you put it, the guy who worked his butt off gets gipped.

If you don't finish, you don't finish. Try again on the next one.

Like Big Toe said, GA has added a week extension in almost every single major competition. It's more like tradition. But if you feel like you've finished, you can go ahead and submit at the normal time and be better than the rest of. :thumb:

Not to mention, I'm pretty sure everyone's entry could always use fine tuning. Except for Kotter, he's awesome.

Tradition usually isn't good thing. It just means its something that people are expecting at the end of every comp. If i was told at work that had to make a milestone....I will make that milestone. I'm not going to expect that milestone to extend every time.

People making their deadlines is sometimes just as important. If you don't get a game done at the time you need to, it could cost your publisher a million dollars or more.

I know that the better the entries, the better the site looks. And i bet that's the main reason the extensions are given. But yeah i don't think it should be a "tradition". If you don't get it done its your own fault. It shouldn't be the fault of the deadline itself.

Final Thought: I think you guys should shake up the tradition and be a little more strict with the deadlines. Especially when there's thousands of dollars worth of prizes on the line. You simply just punish those who follow the rules and reward those who slack.

the irony is ....Thank you for rewarding this slacker with an extension.... now i can finish.

I`m glad to have this extension week, but thats because i dont be so prefessional to do this comp in the original time. With this extra week could i reach the level of every very skilled prof in this comp? I dont think so!!!.
And, what is the purpose of this comp? In my case, i really dont think i can win, but, i can say right now, I WIN... a lot of experience, new friends, etc...

Have fun!!!, that`s all.:lucky:

Like I said, life happens. If you want to dive deeper into my personal life, I also need to get an Endoscopy done on Friday, so I will be out from anesthesia for a good whole days worth of work I could've put in. But it's for my health, which is obviously the priority. I had planned on making the deadline, mind you. But with all the recent uneventful and UNCONTROLLABLE circumstances happening in my life, I am glad to see that I will now have time to get my entry to it's highest potential. I understand to some it seems unfair, and that's fine, I am just saying in my situation, I am glad to have this extension, because I really wanted to enter and finish the comp, but things happened beyond my control. I am entirely grateful for this second chance.

Good points, but most of us have a full-time job and life to attend to. If the comp was set around a professional environment (ie: with commercial prospects in mind), changing the deadline is indeed unacceptable.
Alas, for most of us, this comp is an after-hours project; and trying to find the time -especially in holiday season- to work on this can be quite sparse indeed.

I'm quite sure most of the entrants in this challenge are here for the experience to grow as an artist and most likely, to get some exposure into the community; but not necessarily for winning the prizes.

And explain me one thing though, how come this extension is so bad? It's a non-commercial, purely aesthetic challenge (you know, for funs!). Comparing this deadline to milestones is a bit off-track imho, as the motivations to finish are completely different. Because there's a whole lot more at stake if you don't reach a milestone at work.

If one is able to finish in time, what's the big effin' deal? You polish it up or you submit, and that's that.
As if the 'slackers' are suddenly going to get into hyperdrive mode and pump something out that's a bazillion times better than most of the submissions that made the deadline.

I'm glad that so many people have different views on it and guess what you're aloud to! It's not that this comp is worse than any other comp. I figured most everyone would miss the point I was trying to make and that's fine because I wasn't expecting miracles. I just wanted to voice my point that's all and I wouldn't expect anything different from any one else.

Mrpearlzildjian:I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I realize life happens and maybe that's life's way of saying their are more important things in life than game art comps for fun. I really hope you do have enough time to finish. And again I'm truly sorry to hear that kind of news.

for every one else that didn't like what I had to say: I guess if I'm the only one with the problem and it effects me enough to say something than I'll just stop doing these comps. Sorry for cause ripples in the pond :(

Extensions, bad. Here is why, not saying that everyone who wasn't going to finish are slow pokes, but I will say that most of them are and those people should not be awarded for poor time managment. Someone does everything they need to to get down in time, then a extension is giving. Not Cool. Ok fine, now the people that turn theirs in on time, should get some kind of recognition for it. Like in the mini comps, the late people should have points automatically taken away, so that at least it seems fair.

If there's an extension for almost every main competition then surely somebody would take the initiative and make all competitions a week longer.

At the end of the day, a competition is a competition. There might be an element of community bonding but the goal is to produce a model to the best of your ability in the time given and an extension defeats the point of this.

If this is a constant within every competition then the competitions should be longer to compensate.

~ Incorrect.
These things were started to expand the art community, and help each other improve and congratulate progression. Stop crying.

That is only part of the competition. However, we also have relevant 2d/3d art threads for this. Big competitions like this are a chance for us to prove how much we have learned from all the threads and feedback we have received over the course of the year on smaller projects.

The games industry is a competitive one, this competition should reflect on this. After all, it is a competition and if you are serious about getting a job in the games industry then competitiveness and drive complement each other very well.

Otherwise there are no points to these competitions and we should all just stick to posting in the 2d/3d threads where there are no restrictions.

Let me put a quick point up before I get back to work.

Until now, I have used my programs without issues including all of them ON my laptop. However, just recently, with about 1.2 weeks left in the comp, I start having serious issues with ZBrush and 3DC issues which NEVER before I had.

I HAD to learn entire new workflows to bypass these issues.

Also, my screen on Laptop started flicking, due to some damaged screen capable I was able to conclude.

Had to learn how to position my screen to not get the flickers.

Now all those "Extension Nay Sayers" (ENS) out there, for people like me, in which life throws stuff at, even a 1 day extension would be much needed. We cannot predict on when a child is born precisely, or why our program which worked for 1 year issue-free suddenly started to fluke out, you cannot call us "Bad time managers"...you simply cannot., maybe unlucky, but c'mon.

Extensions are never a bad thing. Slackers won't be able to DISH OUT a insanely amazing piece of work in 1 week extension, there is a reason they netted us almost a month to get this work done. So if you worked hard, got some issue and couldn't continue, the extra week will simply be a life-saver, that's it.

been away for couples of days, and just know this. extension wasn't that bad. i admit i got bad time management this time. i was thinking to finish it on 24th before. but now, i'm one of the extension fans.

why don't we try to not using extension for another comp, and state from the beginning that there will be no extension on the main rule (issue that there will be extension for almost main comp really goin through my head). that gonna push us to do better time management, for me at least. its not encourage us to hoping for extension and find some excuse for our laziness.

i don't understand why you guys are so pissed off whenever a comp gets an extension? it's not like you have to stop working at the old deadline while everyone else keeps going. if you are able to finish great, spend more time on the presentation while others are frantically trying to map their uv's and figure out software they've never used.

i'm not trying to fuel anything here, believe me i've got more than enough unfinished peices to understand the need for a deadline. but this IS NOT a professional environment and NOBODY is making money on the final product.

and for that matter, Marcus has been done for 3 weeks now so then best any of us will do is 2nd place anyway:p except for kotter and hazardous, they're disqualified for being too sexy

Fortunately for us, all of us, luck is on our side, as our generous hosts have allowed us additional time.
