I've had an itch to model this guy for AGES. And finally decided to do it.

This is Monkey D Luffy from the anime One Piece, for those that don't know.

He's the most insanely awesome anime character ever. so there. :P haha...

So I started on this today during my few-and-far-between lulls in my ability to do other work. Sort of a speed model tho

Links show up as deadlinks to me. Perhaps if you use the gameartisans attach file, this would be easier.

While I wait for the images, hey, welcome to Gameartisans:)

@Athey - Hey man...welcome to this awesome site. I must say, that is a good start on him. Care to show some wire shots on the next update? I will be sure to stay updated on your threads to help as much as I can. good luck man.

Hey looks good so far. Did you start you concept drawing over top a picture of a Luffy figurine?

Athey

Thanks all, got some wires for you all -

The flat colors pic up above was the very very beginning of the textures - just flat colors at 100% self-illumination.

And yes, the concept drawing for the front is an edit/paintover of a Luffy Figurine. :D hah..

The original figure has his arms folded in front of him, which is why there's a bit of a paint-over there. The arm that's straight is actually from a totally different figurine of Luffy.

Anyways, Wires:

No that's a really good idea, because you know will have your pose set up for this model as well as you will have a figurine to hold in your hand while modeling/ texture, which will help out more then anyone person's suggestions.

Athey

I don't actually have the figurine - I wish! It looks awesome... but it would cost $40 and I'd have to import it from japan. lol... I'm annoyingly practical and never let myself spend more then $20 on something that doesn't serve a useful purpose.

Nope, I just stumbled across the photo of the figure and thought it was perfect for reference since it was an almost dead-on front view.

thanks for posting the wires. It looks like you know what your doing :D. Keep up the good work.

Got an update.

I've actually got some hair started already, but it's not looking right yet, so I'm gonna rework it some more before posting anything.. ^^;;

Looking good Athey! :) Love your previous works and can't wait to see this one finished!

I know its a bit too early to actually give critiques, but... Seams on the jacket and pants wiould give alot of nice details for him, depending on how 'realistic' you're aiming for :) Keep it up!

loving it so far.
although he is looking a bit pale right now. more contrast over all

Athey

I actually started out with a lot more contrast in the skin texture and then toned it down a lot. I honestly don't want a lot of contrasting detail in the skin for this guy.

I'm gonna guess that you all probably don't know squat about this character, but he's a "Gomu ningen" (Rubber Man) and can stretch in all sorts of crazy ways, and one of the things I'm thinking I might do with this guy is some crazy stretchy-bones rig. So the less detail there is on his skin, the less stuff there is to go all stretchy crazy.

He doesn't usually have a lot of defined muscle apparent (in the comic / show) I want to sort of keep him simple. Or at least give it a shot first.

Anyways progress report! -
The hat isn't done (obviously) just flat colors on it right now.
And I'm still not 100% happy with the hair....

coming nicely, ya the hair looks strange....maybe its has to do where the hair line starts? it seems to high to me....other than that, great work yoz.

edit: oh wait its not! the buttons seem to be on the wrong side.

Deto
10-23-2007, 01:05 AM
No crits now, its looking great so far :D

BuroKun: There's no right or wrong side for buttons :D Boys shirts and girls shirts have them on different sides, and even then its not 100% sure which side they are in. Depends on design sometimes ;)

BuroKun
10-23-2007, 01:09 AM
@Deto - I know what you are saying, but all the pictures of him that I have seen shows the buttons on the other side.

Athey
10-23-2007, 12:04 PM
:P The figurine of him has the buttons on the wrong side. They way they're always drawn in the comic / show has them on the side I've got them on here.

meh kinda looks wrong though, you shade his cloths more contrast fuller then the skin on him. Still pointing for more contrast on the skin but dont want to bump with it in any other next post though.

As the rest looks nice, really lovign it, though the Hair doesnt look to much Luffy alike. His hair is Chaotic, you did right, but it still needs a tipy of "spiked only" style. Maybe try to do spikes instead of Alphamap.

go! me likes!

I still don't feel done with it. I want to re-rig him (messed up a lot on this one - first time messing with stretchy bones) and I really wanted to do a bunch of facial controls to make his wacky expressions.
But time is extremely limited so unless I can come across some more plentiful freetime I may have to call this the end. I really hope to finish it up though.

Athey

I've re-rigged him from scratch and it's come out a lot better - haven't got any new body poses, but I did take a few shots of the face rig :D

that looks sweet! do you perhaps have any tutorials on facial rigging like you do it? (i have read it somewhere, but didn't really understand, lots of scripting etc.)
i think you could still improve the hair a bit, it looks pretty random and spikey :p

keep it up!

Athey

Face rig is a ton of morph targets controlled through the reaction manager with the custom controller interface.

Basically like this tutorial -
http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials/face_rig/face_rig.asp

Although I don't use that controller script - I've got my own that I think works a lot better. But the one that tutorial links to is still more then sufficient.

The biggest problem is that the tutorial I linked to there really doesn't cover what to do when you want to control a single morph with more then one controller - which makes things a lot more complicated... I could go into it, but it's a real pain in the ass.

Those facial expressions are just plain awesome. I wouldn't even know where to begin to do something like that. They work wonders to bring out the character's... character (that one never gets old).

The character itself it pretty creepy and not very likable, but that's no fault of yours. Just my own preference :P From what I've seen when Googling, you've definitely captured the concept.

yo athey!

great job! that facial rig came out awesome! my only crit would be that his skin looks a little pale, you could probably up the saturation a lil bit and the contrast as well. otherwise, it's a great model
