over at polycount there is a really cool lowpoly challenge which i decided to enter even though i don't have time at all :inocent: (schoolexams in two weeks, this week is meant for learning)
view the rules here: http://boards.polycount.net/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=240905&an=contest&page=0#Post240905
well anyway i am aiming for a couple of zombie variations of 750 tris so i can get up to 40 zombies walking around my scene.
here is a base model i made tonight:

crits and comments would be very nice!

you could add more types of zombies but making some with no legs or like one arm...save some polyz that way maybe?....this guy looks nice, would make his upper body thinner(the shoulders mainly), and his butt looks weird.

Nic model i like the topologie of the face.. One thing though, The lower arms lookts bigger than his upper arm. Good luck with the come... its a though one, it is going to thake up allot of time.

@ borokun: yeah i intended that already. hmm.. i forgot to slim him down a little...
@Sorid23: thanks! i hope it won't take up time, 'cause in two weeks i have schoolexamas :P
here is a first pass on the texture, first gonna do one that still has all of his limbs. i intend to do a mummie too :D I also rigged him, but that's not really worth showing yet.

i'm getting sick by all the reference images i looked up :P
crits and comments welcome!
Coming nicely Japhir :) The contest looks pretty cool too. How many different kinds of zombies are you going to do? Also do you have plans for the 'scene'? I recall reading about that in the contest stuff, that you have to have some kind of scene even if its just a plane with some stuff in..
But none the less, nothing to actually critique on. I porbably would have made even simplir foot and hands, but its fine that way too :)

Zombies aren't normally super red. you should try using really pale skin colors with some blue and purple for bruising. and blood would be nice. and I would just give him a shirt, not an over shirt, it looks weird. and the clothing you have now looks to nice to be on zombie, no blood on it, not a rip in site. so ya...thats my crits. I will watch for updates. good luck.

@ deto: don't know yet, a couple of skin variations and a couple of model variations. i don't have any plans on the scene yet, i might end up using just a plane :P
@ BoroKun: I know, but i'm gonna make a couple of variations and if i'd just make "normal" zombies it would be rather dull. the texture is still very wip. i am going to add dirt and blood, but i first wanted to get the basic shapes down.
i kinda like his outfit, the others are probably going to be t-shirts but this one is gonna stay like it is.
thanks!

i am working on it a bit, but i've also got to do maths etc for my school exams so no major updates...
here is the color blockin and some face detail (photobased for the first time in a looong time :P)for the hero guy:

i really enjoyed myself with the hero character... maybe a little too much :D here is an update:
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/6888/zombiehordewipth2.jpg
is the contrast on the sweater too high? i thought it was ok so i left it like this. some photosourcing and lots of retouching (sweater=no photosource only colors :D) (yeah i'm proud so what ;))
crits welcome!
I really like the shirt. Need to get myself one of those, methinks. The silhouette of his thighs seems to indicate that the pants are rather taut around them, but the heavy folds there seem to indicate they are the opposite.
Good powerful stance, btw. I can tell you are a comic book reader :)

thanks! i'll look into the pants. i'm not really a comicbook reader though :) only donald duck :D
thanks again
Are you sure about the comic book reader thing (you probably are, normally people don't read a lot of comics without knowing about it)? Maybe I'm confusing you with someone else over at Polycount..
Good luck in the comp. Oh, and I think you need to make a few zombies with severed limbs. That would be great. Zombies walking around carrying their own severed limbs as snacks, between brain meals, those are zombies I can respect while I blow their heads off.

thanks and yeah, i'm pretty sure :P at polycount i'm also called Japhir though. I'll make some respectable zombies if i have time :D
here is a small update:
http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/936/zombiehordewiplg1.jpg
i used a free shader from somewhere over at polycount, but now my file is all screwed up and i can't open it up anymore :( it says: Error Loading Biped, and then: Invalid file- only partially loaded.and then: file open failed: (and the location of my file) damnnn!!
any ideas how to fix it?
EDIT: i forgot to widen the pants :D
That's looking great :D I love the sweater, bonewhite + black rocks :) The face looks brilliant too
About the problem... have you tried merging/importing stuff from the file to a new file? It sometimes works, if the old file has some render settings set that mess up... At least you could save the mesh and just reapply textures to it
edit: His feet look a bit flat, I'd probably thicken them up abit, right now it looks somewhat like he's running around without shoebottoms :)

thanks! i'll try that soon.
the shoes are allstars (as you might have noticed) which are pretty flat shoes anyway, but i'll work on it as soon as i found a way to open my file. i still have my base zombie, and i saved the edited uv's as a seperate file too, so all i really need to do is adjust the pants and shoes of the base model and my hero is back :D
thanks!
Yeah, I have all stars converses as shoes, or had. Till I walked my feet through it :D The bottom really is flat, but if you look at his legs and feet, it seems the bottoms of his shoes are nearer to 5mm than thickness :D

Ok i beefed them up a little.
here are my first specular maps ever, and a render with my own light setup. i managed to save the model, the uv's and the biped but the skinning/rigging is gone...

crits and comments most welcome!
EDIT: now that i look at it i probably didn't save the file after beefing up the feet, and then when opening it and trying to render it i didn't notice :D

lol i made a sword:
http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/92/zombiehordewippl5.jpg
btw is it okay to have a texture that isn't square or 1:2/2:1 but 1:3 or 3:1 (example: this sword texture is 128x32)
probably not gonna keep this sword 'couse how can a guy like him get a sword like that :D so just a placeholder.
and yes it has a legolas dagger motive on it.
I'd adjust his chest area. looks like he's got boobs from some angles; other wise very cool!
Japhir
10-24-2007, 03:18 PM
thanks! i got rid of his boobs :D
i couln't resist not working on it :D so i made a zombie texture :D

thanks a lot guys!
update:
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/2838/zombiehordewipjm8.jpg
upperleft are 100% self illuminated. I'm not too happy with his dirt/blood yet, so any tips on that would be great!
btw, somehow when i'm working with this scene i don't see my "perspective" button and my statistics in the top left of the view, i can right click it to change the settings, but i can't see it. (i also have the statistics turned on)
any ideas on how to make them visable again? in my other scenes it works just fine.
thanks again!
Tips, hmm... maybe darken the blood on the sides and the middle of the blood smears, lighten it up some. Or opposite... Dunno which one is more real and I prefer not to google such, weak stomach .. :D
All it really needs is more variation in depth of red I thinks, the areas and splatters are good where you've got them now, only the shade is a bit monotone :)
As for max problem... Must say I've got no idea :D

Cool! Looks like a fun challenge!
I got an idea for ya, you could make a missing leg or arm by using an alphamap and getting rid of the useless poly's =)

thanks guys! i didn't really feel like drawing blood today (even though i saw some blood spat images in NCIS yesterday night :p) so instead i fattified my basic zombie.

I like the fat version, has a bit more character. Nice work.
Yeah, the fat zombie definitely has character. I like it a lot. This is certainly a fun thread to follow :) Now, let's see a sexy, somewhat decayed female zombie.
