Theme:
Halloween Avatars!
Brief:
Halloween is upon us! Let's get down and dirty with monsters, ghosts, and ghouls. This mini comp is dedicated to the creation of the spooky, macabre, and frightful--anything 'Halloween' themed goes, be it monsters, a graveyard-you name it! The only catch: when you've finished your creation, create a smaller 'Avatar' image as well.
In the words of Fred: Submit a large image for your final, but somewhere in that large image, you should have your 100w x 140h sized avatar pic. Additionally, it would be nice if you actually temporarily replaced your avatar with your Halloween one
For concept art, we are looking for the same, but in 2d . As always, Backgrounds are optional. Pedestals are optional. Texturing/coloring is optional. Basically... everything is optional. This challenge is here for those desiring to practice their art and receive friendly advice from fellow artisans. So as mentioned in mini comp #1-4, keep it easy, keep it quick, and keep it real. Good Luck!
Please do not make a new thread for your entry. Keep all w.i.p shots in this specific thread.
The Specs:
- 650 triangles maximum
- 1x512 diffuse
- Optional bonus maps: 1x512 spec, 1x512 normal, 1x512 transparency,
1x512 glow, 1x512 reflection

Hum... i am thinking... no face.. big hood.. sickle.. mebe.. a fat grim reaper :thumb:

sounds cool, just a question can it be just a bust or would it have to be the whole character??
FredH

Here is my starting sketch:D
http://www.gameartisans.org/forums/customavatars/avatar2_5.gif
... now I just have to zombiefy her. I'll probably just do her head and a bit of her upper body. No hands or anything.
I'll start on her after the naruto comp is over.
Good luck everyone!

it can be just a bust, shadowbreeze. Just make it cool!

Ah what the heck, I'm in. I'm thinking walking jack-o-lantern :D
Shivmoo
10-19-2007, 10:39 PM
I hope that ramseus wasnt thinking of this kinda walking jacko...
My first idea was to make santa clause wearing the grim reaper getup.. that kinda evolved into this
I went for a bold kinda design as its an avatar.. and i cant actually draw very well :paper:
Edit- Second pic
I feel like i am flooding this topic.. this will be my last pic update i promise.. at least for now...
A friend sugested that i have cut out arms, so i tested 1.. and it looked unbalanced, adding a sickle looks better.
I feel it loses the grim pumpkin a bit.. choices choices.. sleep

Awesome I am in. Not sure what to make yet but maybe something like the anima summon from FFX. The blindfolded tortured creature thing is real creepy... or something like in Jacob's Ladder.
So pretty much anything goes, as long as its Halloween themed, right?
In that case I'm thinking "chibi pumpkin skull mask monster"... if thats OK. :)

I'll try to do something similar to my display picture that I made.
Just through some photo's together, photo edited them. - bam my concept! >_<
Goodluck !

lol, it's a jack-o-lantern with feet. I didn't want to spend an extra ten minutes making the pumpkin as smooth as possible, I'd rather spend nine minutes cleaning up the normal map.

The feet on your pumpkin are soo coool, they instantly add tons of character to him!
Definatly looking forward to a garish colour scheme on it :)
I am currently working on a rig for mine, so i can play about with its pose.

I feel left out with all these high poly models flying around.
Here is my contribution so far.
648 tri's
Defeat
10-21-2007, 09:48 AM
Ahhh im having a realy realy hard time modeling my character with only 650 tris. Could you extend it to 1000 maybe?
e/ never mind i'll go with a new idea. And can we do multible entrys?
Defeat: I think you can only do one entry. But I'm sure with normals/bumps/whatnot you can do your character in 650 polys. More than plenty ^^
Here's my first "sketch"... still playing with ideas... and its not very Halloweeny yet...
http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa271/zanuah/Hallo_Avatar_wip01.jpg
He still needs his pumpkin mask and I'm thinking I'll give him a candy basket that he'll carry around with his tail... dunno...
-JL-: that's very good looking! :D Maybe rather carry the basket in hand? Or something else for that matter, small black cauldron and some 'halloweeny toy weapon' in other hand?
Thanks Deto. :) I still made him carry something with his tail, though this time its a pumpkin light... he carries it behind him so that it casts large shadows on walls ... this way he can scare small children more effectively since he himself is only about 30 cm tall. :D
http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa271/zanuah/Hallo_Avatar_wip02.jpg
Still have some polies left... and also did some quick gradient color tests.

Ya I did finish up my entry model and I uved it and started a nice sculpt but I forgot to save when I went and imported a model over a million tris and my computer crashed. So I will have to make another entry. Btw it was frankesteins head on a little table and some other stuff on it to. I'll post some wips when I get something done.

off to a good start -JL-,be looking forward to seeing this textured.
Defeat :: That sucks... no auto back-up I suppose?
Free-Willy :: Thanks! Me too :).
Well here's the final lowpoly... turned out to be 650 tri's exactly... On to UV's. :)

Shivmoo
10-21-2007, 08:35 PM
Vinny- That looks like a tiki skull, i am hoping for some messed with proportions :)
-jl- - When your finished can you post up a pic of the shadow that the lantern would create? it would be interesting to see what shape it actually makes as you have those sonic like spikes sticking out the back.
Well, i have just finished my second full uv.. its a terrible terrible use of space, i will sleep on it and decide if i want to spend time fixing it up or if it will serve its purpose.
Here is a link to a youtube turnaround with constant shading and blocked in colours - http://youtube.com/watch?v=CNEnSXpnn-I

I changed my mind and went with a silly rather than scary character. Anyway here is my progress. Holla I got it to 650 tris exactly. A skeleton wearing a dinosaur costume w/bag. This character will be my first rigged character (I usually work on environments/props) I am rigging him now and hopefully it won't take too long. JL awesome stuff.

lol now that you mention it, there does seem to be a recurring theme of stretched proportions!
Maybe its because stretched proportions tend to look a bit more creepier? :)

No I havne't seen his stuff but it is cool... thanks for the link. I was really wanting to make something with ribbon type arms like "Zeruel" the 14th Angel from Evangelion. It is a mix between that and the hot dog from "burgertime" and a skeleton I guess. Thx for the comment.

brickwallfish, are hollows your inspiration for the hole and mask?
Not for the mask, it's more inspired on the Halloween horror movie with the guy in the hockey mask and the chainsaw ;) Next to bleach a bit of spirited away is in there as well. But i'm still in concept phase so the design is likely to change a bit.
cool a comp i can enter! -JL- really cool work so far mate !

This Count V is looking great dfacto! And you are nearing completion so early to boot. I think with just a little more love on the suit's folds and winkles, he would look even better. Also, if you have any spare polies, would be cool to see some bubbles in there.
Gok, playing with colors? Yup, he is very colorful:D Let's see some substance! hehe

I'll take a part in this contest. Like FredH I'll use my avatar. Note: I took this image from one famous russian cartoon, called "Wings, legs and tails". Here some screens from it:

Gotta shave some polys off her shoulders which leaves about 20-30 triangles for a prop.Original idea was gonna be the witch holding a knife for the avatar pic and then for the big pic you see the knife was to carve a pumpkin that would be in the frame at that point.
Thinking either a spell book, broomstick or something else witchy/halloween related for her prop.

hahah brilliant vied! I don't think there'll be any extension though--it makes sense to end this comp ON halloween, you know?
inpw--solid work, but Im not as much a fan of the pumpkin and stick--they don't seem as well painted as the rest--maybe that's a good place to put some polish. the bird came out nice though!
dray - what the heck is on his head?
shadow-breeze - nice entry--good to see things finishing up -- my only comment would be to think about making the 'mother' text a little more noticable in the avatar...it disappears completely at the small scale!
kuba- great! You got a whole scene in there!
great work everyone!!
Cool vied just remember the joint areas need lovein, can't wait for you to start textures. Nice choice:)

the only problem is that i don't know how to properly create a uv map, i know the tools that are used to create a uv map, i just don't know how to use them :(

since works gonna be crazy for the next 3 days this is all i could manage, it could use some more work, it can aways use some more work, but maybe ill get some feedback and go fix it later :)

@ vinny: i suggest unfold3d or blender. it's easy to learn. but you can pelt your uv model by yourself (i think thats very useful in max) :D . don't let yourself down, dude. this comp purpose is to make us learn and appreciate others!
anyway, i only have a concept so far. hope can make a progress soon...

Vinny: Maya's uv tools are really quite good.
Your basic tools are the same as your modeling tools, move rotate and scale.
You can access the "UV texture editor" in one of your display panels under the "Panels" menu in the.. well. in the panel menu bar.
For fast unwraps here's my workflow.
1: change your panel layout to have a perspective view on one side, and the UV editor on the other
2: map the whole object using a planar map.
3: switch to edge mode, and select edges where you want or need your seams to be.
4: hold Shift and right click in the UV texture editor and select "Cut Uv's" from the resultant marking menu. (or use polygons->cut Uv's in the uv editor panel's panel menu bar)
5: change to UV selection and select some Uv's from a part or two of your model. Press > till nothing else selects.
Move that part over to some blank UV space, and use polygons->unfold UV's to get them to layout pretty flat. If they're being a pain use relax UV's on them (same menu) then unfold again.
Those two tools are usually enough to get a very decent distortion free unwrap so long as you place your uv cuts intelligently.
You can cut uv's anytime you need throughout the UV mapping process too, so its not a one shot deal.

Question.. Sort of..
My avatar is an animated .gif, So now I wonder.
What do i need to submit? Just the avatar or the construction sheets as well?
If I need to submit the construction sheets as well, how do i send in both the .gif and the sheets (.jpg off course)..
Either way, Check out my avatar! Haha, hope you like it!
EDIT:
For some reason it doesn't work.. so i'll just post it here

yeah..im not sure how to handle the animated gif... I'd make a 'still' version and submit that--it just makes things easier to deal with, then you can use the animated one as your avatar itself.
The final image should be a big image that includes the avatar sized one inside it--see shadowbreeze and kuba's final images earlier in this thread--so a big construction image. You could, in that image, have text for a link to the animated gif if you wanted, but that doesn't make it easy for people who want to check..

Damn Tweaker!
Unless there are any other (and better) last minute entry yours will most likely get my vote.. Great job!
Well here's mine... with some quick and simple texture work (kinda lost the "feeling" for his texture, oh well). Also some minor mesh changes here and there... still at 650 tri's though. :)

haha, cool mummy defeat. You did a very good job on the coloring. With just a little more time, yeah, you could have gotten rid of those seams. Still, very nice!
Tweaker , That's just wicked!
-JL-, very nice style there. The lighting adds a lot to the mood.
renaisandi, looks good, the only thing that could have used some more work is the pedestal. It's screaming for some grass blades with with alphas.

PS. I don't understand - I created transparent .gif avatar but in forum it looks with white background :( Any ideas how to solve this problem?
Vailias
10-31-2007, 07:57 PM
what are you saving it with?
if photoshop make sure that the transparency option is checked, or that the matte option is Unchecked depending on which route you're taking out of the program
Good job everyone!
My computer crash while working on my texture... i need to save MORE. here what i've done as fast as i can ^^ hope you like it.
