I have decided to get back on the llama and work on my face/head modeling.
I have been looking at many different tutorials and examples.
I am first wanting to get the loops of the face correct. I spent a little time making this. My friends are letting me use pictures of them for this study. So you will be seeing more of them.

crits, and comments are welcome and wanted.

nice layout. i've drawn so many edgeloops over photos :D i think about half of the files in my "images" folder from max consists of head topology planning :D
interested to see what you come up with!

nice man. try it out see how it works, also remember more loops in the areas of movement such as the mouth.
looks good, try not to have any triangles on the face (you have some near the bottom... but youd be better practicing in 3d me thinks you have the idea nailed in 2d mate.
Jody
Nice friend!
I mean! That's a good idea :D Gotta take photos of my friends and use them too, sounds like a good idea :)

oh i thought of a crit :D:
the corner of the mouth shouldn't end in just 1 or 2 verts, the loop of the upper lip should go over in the loop of the lower lip.
http://www.ogle.com/articles/digital_sculpting.pdf check the "modeling for animation" stuff.
hope it helps!

@Japhir - Thanks for the PDF, I found it useful.
@Frozan - I will start on the models around Friday. I have been busy doing some organizing and backing up.
@Gok - Your right, thanks.
@Deto - Ya Its nice to have good friends who let you model them for practice.

Just started on this head here. Its not my friend, I am still waiting for them to send me the pictures, but I have some free time now, so I thought I would give this a go.
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/3075/wip26ph4.jpg
So what do you guys think of this start? crits and comments are welcome.
Very good start. The areas around eyes look very good :) Not much to comment yet, I'm uncertain of the loop that goes near the sides of mouth, but hard to tell if there's something strange there yet...
My own approach is usually nose first, then eyes, then lips, then connect the pieces :D

That's pretty good Burokun *why i didn't draw edges loop for my head >_<*
SteelS, take a pen and mirror, draw ssome loops to your phase and photograph :D

I like Fatty Arbuckle with the mask overlay. Kinda like perv superhero.

It looks like your developing a solid work flow there BuroKun, I started out making heads the same way by drawing my edge loops but as I got better at it I kinda of took the training wheels off and can now do it from memory. All in all it's a great base for you to learn from and I wish you the best.:thumb:

@Deto - Thank you
@Steel Style - Thank you
@Rick Stirling - He he
@Marcus Dublin - Thank you very much

you need to select the whole object and apply the same smoothing group.
YdoUwant2know
10-27-2007, 12:41 PM
Looks like you are using 3ds Max right? If that is the case use smoothing groups. Under the Modify tab, select the polygons, smoothing groups are in polygon properties
I got the same thing yesterday... I tried selecting all, hit smooth, some smoothed, some not, again, same thing.. Then I noticed I had 'ignore backfacing' checked :D

@BiG ToE - oh ya...duh, thanks.
fixed...
http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/2995/ohpt0.jpg
He's coming along nicely :) The tip of his chin, you need to define the point where the chin and his 'fatty cheek' connects, right now it pretty much 'hides there'.. Maybe one extra loop would fix it :)

looks nice,very clean loops, but you have a few 5-sided polygons and tris in there. The trick is to learn model only in quads so that when sculpting you won't get pinching or weird geometry.
Gavin

Nice looking model so far, although I agree about the tris/5ers. It's not so much that you "can't" use them, you should place them in areas that will either compliment the deformation of the model (such as the joints on a low poly finger) or terminates in an area that has little to no effect...like behind the ear or something. I also think the mouth corners may be a bit too sharp. If you can, rebuild it to add some mass...usually mouths don't pinch like that in the corner.
It may be a bit extreme, but check out Pior's Model (http://www.pioroberson.com/modelpages/pior_snake_002.png)

anyone have any good pics of a low poly ear?.....wanna make sure mine looks good before I post.

nice man. keep going, only way to get better is to keep doing what u want to be good at. :)
Marcus Dublin

I'd say skip looking at low poly ears and just go in and model it out based on the real thing, when you've made it properly you can just optimize it. This is coming along quite nicely BuroKun, keep it up!

@Marcus - Ya, I guess I will do that.
Here is an Update. I have decided to turn this fat guy into my own little Mafia guy. His name is Big Ace. Just started work on the ear, and haven't got a chance to start work on the shoulders/chest/neck thing part. Will hopefully continue and finish this guy tomorrow. Crits and comments are always welcomed. Thanks guys.

very nice work for first attempt i agree with pezzz on that one. keep it up and take the crits as best u can. nice work man!
Shaping up very, very nicely. You're definitely showing progress. Inspires me to want to do something like it, myself, even though I don't particularly enjoy the modeling process :)

Update...I think I'm done with the modeling....I will do some optimizing and whatever after you guys give some crits/comments.

lol...I just noticed that the left eye is off...so he looks stupid, but..oh well
ShadyD

Haha that eye is priceless!
Since you seem to have no poly limit i suggest "fluffing" the tie a little, looks a bit as if made of cardboard right now.

uhm, just one crit:
The widht of the body is like 2 - 2 1/2 of the head size. Just saying that the body you've got now is simply to tiny/small compared to his head. Maybe you did it obviously but i just wanted to point it out.
Everything else it looks very nice! well done

Lookin' good. Ears seems too thin. Now add texture. Models is just the "sketching phase" of making an actual character. Keep up the good work.

nice head model dude! i think scaling out the ears so they're thicker and come off the head a bit more would help.

haha that's actually a good way to look at it.
Burokun: I really like the bust you've got goin` on.... Nice job man! I think the ear need to be brought out more so the are visible from the front perspective.
good start. for nailing down facial anatomy its important to study the different planes on the face and the structure of the skull. after that you can study real photos to capture subtle details on the skin.
here are some good reference:

here are some books i would suggest:

for your first attempt this is actually really good! my edge loops have always been dirty and crappy, but yours look fine! i must agree with TryForce though, the body is a bit tiny, especially the way arms join up with the body - looks too tight. here's a small ref (http://www.lancs.ac.uk/ug/jamesm2/gangster.jpg)

you might want to simplify the edge loops on the clothing, those that define the construction of the clothing arnt needed.

Love that revolver. Looks like you did texture on the companion cube. I would like to see that on the other stuff you've made. Especially that revolver.
