In 3DSMAX 9, is there a way to cut and object with another object?

It sounds like you're after a boolean. In Geometry click the 'Standard Primitives' pulldown and select 'Compound Objects' then select Boolean. You can choose to subtract one object from another and then just clean up the result manually. I'm still using Max 8, so I don't have experience with the new stuff but I hear there's an advanced boolean that gives you better results.
If you're wanting the cut because you have two objects you'd like to join, you can duplicate one object before the cut (boolean destroys the subtraction object). Just make sure that you've capped all holes in the mesh that will be doing the cutting or it won't work.

Also, i think i should add,
that booleans are the way of the past now- insteads theres just tons and tons of techniques/scripts out there that give you fare better results and control.
What are you using booleans for exactly tho :P
