Hi folks. I'm from a far away land called CgChat. I'm slowly revisiting a few of my unfinished entries from the Cg Competitions to beef up my portfolio. This wip was a zerg-inspired creature, caught while metamorphing from a larval form into an armored beetle.

Cgchat isn't as far away as you think :p Welcome dude!
That looks really good; the only thing I can say is that you need some color variation, though I'd bet heavily that'd you were going to add that at a later phase anyway.

woohoo this was awesome when i saw it ages ago, glad your coming back to it again, the last one had a purple and cream colour scheme if i remember rightly, what are your plans for the texturing,...100% diffuse or normal, spec, bump etc?

i saw this one when i joined Cgchat's Forum i guess. I really loved the detail of it and the lovly color sheme. You got great work Proto, although its sad you havnt fininshed something else then that Rat-warrior/wizzard i think. I mean finished what we have seen. Really looking forward to it.
Is it finished or still WIP? If still WIP, I'd suggest adding some 'special features' on its skin, maybe some damage (if they would fit to it...), odd colored spots (darker, etc, like moles on human) and some veins around its softer body parts :)
Its very good looking, I like it. The texture looks very fine ^^ You should make it a background, nest or some dead plains :)

Thanks for the comments guys. This was still very much a wip, and it indeed has color. (I just desaturated the image to be difficult) It's much further along, almost finished, so I'll be posting it soon.
Free-willy: It's being painted for 100% diffuse. I think it'll be my last going that route, everything else from here on out will be next-gen. (boo!)

Nice to see this guy again proto, I had images of it in my inspiration folder from a few years back. I'm looking forward to seeing what else you do with this guy, and on top of that he would make for an awesome sculpt study!:)

As Marcus i will keep and eye on this thread. finish this Zerg! :D i loved the design you did, and it would be a pity if you don't finish it. Reddish and dark colors will give him a nice look.
Glad to see you here.

Love it. It's really something but finish it. It's already pretty solid, but you can make it better.

I slapped him with a bit more paint. I'm working on the fleshy transitional bits, then I'll put the real color to him.
I accidentally compressed a bunch of my layers (I blame the halloween parties and resulting lack of sleep) so changing the existing colors (orange reds) might take a little longer than I'd like. Oh well.

I was gonna crit on the first pic, then saw the 2nd... so glad you came back to this guy, looks f'n fantastic. Badass job man. The shell painting is quite superb. Is this all just diffuse?

I'm glad you guys are digging it. I'm taking a short break so I can finalize the colors with a fresh set of eyes.
I spent a little bit of time this afternoon attacking another (I have tons) ooold unfinished entry. It was a scavenger of the underworld, kind of a mixing of a vulture/bat/rat in an undead form. I plan to finish this one up real fast.
It's embarassing revisiting old work, my UV layouts were horrible. It certainly makes the redos humbling having to wrestle with past mistakes.
And Onelung, yup, all diffuse.

damn you got some insane painting skills man. i'm really keen to see how you translate your eye for detail to sculpting

that is amazing! i wonder why he doesn't have arms though :p

Man... that is one scarry bugger! I wouldnt mind using him in a starcraft game (im a fan!). The only think that disturbes me is the curved bone which he uses as a front leg. I would put a bit more curve to it and not make it so straight.
As for the dinosaur/bat/rat.. thing, the legs look too small, theres no way his body would be able to be supported on those legs hed topple and fall. I would make them hooked claws and add some wings which would give it a flying bat vulture look. But apart from that I must congratulate you on your painting skills they are amazing.
Well awsome work and hope you finish this soon!

I thing his work deserves to be called something better than this useless word.

Looking at this little critter takes me back to the good ol days:lucky:, I remember this was another guy that was never completed for comp. I've always admired your high level of detail and can't wait to see him finally finished. I think it's been two years or so, so no need to rush things, hehe;).

Tacit Math: Thanks. I'm actually looking forward to being able to use materials. Should be fun using spec maps, casting real shadows, and not having to fake things,
Kus Umok and Japhir: Thanks for the crits. He's got wings actually, I'm attaching a screen grab of the full model. The deal was being in hell he wasn't to be comfortable unless he was latched on and sunken into some helpless creature. So those claw feet were just meant to sink into his meal's flesh.
b1ll: You're...... doing next gen stuff? Where might one see such craziness?
Chasarsis: You're telling me. Making world war stuff from photos almost drove me to suicide. It's refreshing being able to use one's brain!
Marcus Dublin: Haha, say that and he'll go into the wip bin for another 2 years. That must be reverse psychology.. After these two I might spend a day and knock out the rest of the goblin knight character.
b1ll: You're...... doing next gen stuff? Where might one see such craziness?
I know what you mean man, but Ben adapted an his HR stuff looks great!
Oh and BuroKun, don't make a big deal out of someones use of words. b1ll (ben's) comment was a compliment, its how people talk these days, adapt or live with it.

Really nice stuff man. I'd love to see the wireframe of your first creature.
If I had any crit, it's that some of your volumes are a bit shallow in terms of contrast. I'd like to see some darker darks, and some lighter lights. Minor crit, otherwise I really like this. More more moar!

Man, I'm loving it all. Love how the bat thing isn't just one color but there's additional color on certain areas. I would like to see that on the bigger guy as well. Maybe some pink or whatever. Pink for vulnerable spots or just colorize some areas to show harder shell. The bat wings' "back-part" looks very unnatural because it looks like it's there to always slow him down if his arms aren't always high up in a gliding position. So when he flaps they can be in the way. Design wise it looks a bit odd. Maybe have them attach to the shoulder blades lower end or shoulder's edge...hopefully I'm making sense. Yet, make your own decisions. I'm just pointing out thing's that I'm noticing. But all in all, they all look fantastic.

Very impressive textures on both these models.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.
Poop: I agree about the contrast. I've always questioned if it's what I'm doing or if it's a byproduct of the old tech LCD's I'm working on. Sometimes I see it on other monitors and it's fine, other times it looks drab and doesn't really have the highs and lows like you mentioned.
What an artist, blaming my monitor... :D I'll post a wireframe when I get him finished up.
_tdc_: I'm playing the tortureous nature of hell card for the wing structure. Same reason as the feet, and same reason for the hole in his chest. Nothing is pleasant or convenient in hell!
I'll be posting these finished guys soon, probably once I launch the website. Other than the goblin knight, I think this general character is the last one I'm revisiting. Then goodbye to self illuminated fun.
