Well... I'm not really good at this sort of thing...
I'm an artist, not a reporter...
This might be old news to some of you... but I just learned about this, and it scares me.

Here it goes...

Apparently there is this big company called Monsanto.
They make Genetically engineered plants.
They own a patent on the seeds that the plants produce.

If you are a farmer and you plant Monsanto's seeds, you are not allowed to save seeds at harvest time and replant them.

Monsanto's plant's pollen is carried to normal plants and gives birth to seeds with the patented gene that Monsanto created. Now, there is a good chance that you can be sued.

It seem like if the Monsanto gene contaminates all the plants, Monsanto can say they own all plant life in the world eventually.

Monsanto has bought out a lot of seed companies and is pushing it's product on farmers.

I feel very nervous. =(

Even the non GMO corn from Central America (birthplace of sooo many types of corn) is becoming contaminated with the Monsanto gene.

Please make your own research and come to your own conclusions.
Also if you have some more info on this, I'd love to hear about it!

I see a lawsuit brewing

If your patented gene infects my organic crop it's potentially losing me Billions. I'd also sue for unrestricted use of infected seeds because I never gave them permission to infect my organic crop...

seriously this is naturist/anti GM crop propaganda, corparations are kept in cheque and when the farmers lobby turns round and sues this company they will win. And other countrys will just blatently ignore this patent complaining that they never wanted their "gene" and it replicating into their crops is illegal.

Edit - Also the second they start stopping farmers in poor countrys where there are alot of poor and food prices rise they will be villified as holding the world hostage. their marketing people know this, their lawyers know this.

As long as they make a healthy profit from people using their crops which probably generate bigger yields and more profit for the farmers anyway, they wont go after any cross contaminated crops for fear of any of the above.

Aren't you a smart cookie. Mmmmmm.... cookies. :)

General Discussion has its limits. We discuss lots of topics that are off the beaten path. However roundabout, they usually relate to art or our lives as artists.

A discussion regarding the global food supply, as it relates to patents on seeds, is hardly a relevant topic to this site. After all, this is GameARTISANS not GameACTIVISTS.

I'm a firm believer in people having a social conscience. That's a good thing. The world doesn't revolve around any one single person. However, there's a time and a place for everything. This is not really the place.
