Not really the best place to start this thread, MyPeople.
1) This is a CG site, making this already the wrong forum for cell phone plan discussion.
2) Plans are going to vary from state to state and from carrier to carrier.
3) This is an international community. You need localized information.
4) This is a CG site. :p
Not to sound like a dick, but just do the legwork yourself. A little Google & net browsing never killed anybody. Research the plans offered by the carriers where you live. Shop around. You may just find limited time specials too.

Do you want a smart or regular phone? Get a BB Curve used. Or eBay one of those smartphones. But if you have the iPhone, then you either bought it outright, or you have a contract. Last I checked ALL AT&T smartphones REQUIRE the data contract to have it. That's like $35 on top of the phone part.
I'd call and reduce the talk time on the phone, but I think you're at the lowest already. Most smartphones are around $70~$130 a month.
If you don't NEED a fancy schmancy phone, then you can get a talk plan with a regular phone for $30.

cooke, this is general discussion. I'd think almost anything not offensive has a place here. :) It's all toward building a better community.
I've got an LG on the At&t. It's decent, and use it for only talking, messaging, and occasional photos (so, no browsing). It's pretty cheap with a 2 yr contract too. I have a tendency to hit the touchscreen with my cheek while talking though.

General discussion to be sure, but how much constructive help he'll get is another story. You've gotta admit that GameArtisans isn't exactly as authoritative as something like AT&T or the Verizon Store. There is a lot more to be gained on specialized forums or in localized comparison shopping. I sincerely doubt that he'd get much help from a guy in Singapore, Ontario, or Panama. The type of deal or service I'd get in NYC is not the same type I'd get over in Arizona. There's some stuff that's fairly universal, but there's a lot of carrier stuff that's highly localized - especially when you're dealing with contracts.
For my part, I've got a rinky dink Sony Ericsson flip. Standard crappy keypad and no predictive text, which makes texting a royal pain, but that okay. I'm a barebones sort of cell user. I mostly use it for... SHOCK phone calls. :p I've got something like 1500 anytime minutes on calls and 500 free texts. The minutes are rollover. I pay about $60 a month and my carrier is AT&T.

what you do is get everyone you want to talk to, together and do a family plan. Then you can call them all for free. It's what I do, and I'm awsome.
