View Full Version : Do you guys finish games?

Here's a question for you all: Do you usually finish a game that you buy?

When I was a kid I'd finish pretty much every game I had. Twice sometimes. There are a couple of specific ones I finished even more times than that. But nowadays I can't seem to do it anymore. Most games I'd just give one sit. It may be a long one or a short one depending on how good it is. Or it may even be two sits if it's REAL good (which was the case recently with Torchlight). But I haven't actually finished a game in years. The last one I did was Onimusha3 for the PS2 (the one with Jean Reno).

What was the last game you finished?

I played Left 4 Dead pretty thoroughly but other than that I don't think I've actually beat a game start to finish since I got my 360. I probably didn't even on my PS2.

I think the main reason is that I don't depend on my parents or allowance or holidays to get a new game. When you only got one or two games a year you played them through to 100%. Now inbetween work, school and the fact that there's something new I want to play on a monthly basis games aren't getting the time they deserve.

I finish most of my games... I've noticed that if I don't finish a game it is attributed to one or more of the following factors

a. the game is boring or not engaging.
b. my wife is using the tv when I feel like playing a console game.
c. I wait till too late in the evening to schedule time to play it and I fall asleep.

If one or more of these factors is involved i eventually forget that i have it.

these days.. no

almsot never, i barely buy games anymore.. although i jsut got dragon age and well yea i might actually finish it.

Fps games i generely get maby a few levels in and get bord, and never play again, jap rpg's i dont even bother with anymore. I only really play games i can co-op with friends and family. raving rabbids for the win or L4D.

last game ia ctually finished was... erm symphony of the night when it came out.

Generally I will finish a game unless it's really long or the game just isn't that good.

I generally will play 3 different games at one time and I generally plan to beat them before buying new ones. I figure that by the time I beat the games that one of the games I want might lower in price.

I think co-op will generally add to the amount of time I will spend playing a game. And multiplayer helps keep my interest too.

I have this tendency to finish every game that I play, not matter how crappy it is.

I actually finished Jericho, even though the game is complete rubbish, and the same with Assassin's creed.
One may call it "the need for closure". :) Although in the case of Jericho, I really wish I didn't... :paper:

yeah for the most part... but I wait to hear about the game before I buy it in the first place. Like this new CDMW2 just came out... not hearing to many good things about it for the pc and online play... But I do hear the single player mode is pretty sweet... might get it for that reason though. But yeah, game has to be good for me to finish it... cause my some what A.D.D kicks in and I lose all interest in the game if its story, action, graphics are not good...

I hadn't finished a game in a long time until about two months ago. The last game I played all the way through was RE4 back in 2006. The last two months I've played through L4D, Call of Juarez 2, Batman Arkham Asylum, Resident Evil 5, and Mass Effect. I've started realizing that I was at the top of my art when I was truly inspired by games out there.

I have to finish all the games I buy, it helps me spend less! I know the stack of games I want to buy/play will grow and grow and grow and my playing time being pretty small, ill never hope to catch up to it. Compounded because I like RPG's of every ilk.

Dark Chronicle ( Dark Cloud 2 ) was the last game I finished, just this weekend lol.

Its an oldy but a goody. Before that twas Eternal Sonata. I havent brought / played a good action adventure game since Assassins Creed 1 which I loved.

I've learned my lesson about getting games before I finish them. I had just under 900 and only finished 50% of them. Some were not even opened and I bought games monthly. Now I focus on finishing the games I have before I start buying more.

Well, I think not having a fulltime job helped with that too.

When i was a kid i didn't finish games, the first game i ever finished was Final Fantasy IX, from then, i finished all my games (around 20 maybe) except those i really like (such as .hack//infection for example) and those i was playing on PC (SNES emulation for most).
But since i started working 1 year ago, i use my free-time to make personal 3d or boyfriend stuff :P
The last game i finished i think was Crisis Core; i have like 5 RPGs with a game in progress (<- i've been looking for something like 15min for a way too translate that from french to english x_x)

I remember being told by a publisher that not even 30% of people that buy a game will actually finish it and its why not a great deal of love can be seen in the final stages of some games. Im sure thats not true for some big blockbuster games though.

Im really guilty for buying games as soon as they are released and not having the time to play them all. But personally if its good fun and it can hold my interest I will finish it, recently I did both Uncharted games, Brutal Legend, COD MW2 and Killzone 2. all awesome hehe. I got a friend that plays and finishes every game that comes out cos shes obsessed with her gamerscore, no matter how crappy the game is.

As my sig line implicates, not so much anymore. I used to binge on finishing games over and over again if they were even half decent, but now I hardly touch em' anymore as far as goes the campaigns on most games. I got myself into this weird state of mind to where I will only play a campaign/story if it takes 7 hours or less to beat. I can't play games that take forever to beat anymore, because I feel like I am just wasting time. Probably why I am so into FPS games, considering multiplayer, I just play about an hour or two's worth of matches, and call it good, so that way I'm not engaged in the game so much that I feel I have to keep playing.

Same reason I only beat COD MW2 and ODST. Short and sweet, the way I like it.

I never actually beat Onimusha 3! I got about 3/4's of the way done with it, and had to take it back.

I'm not a big game buyer though. Family Video owns my life. lol

Maph play thorugh (golden axe beast rider') you'll soon change ur tune. I liked the franchise back in the day so i thought i'd give the game the respect it was lacking from all the reviews.

I really wanted to play it untill the end no matter how painful, but the fighting style was so glitchy its impossible.

:( i'll keep trying off n on but i think that and ikaruga, guantlet and r-type are all doomed.
<gauntlet because i hear it has no end..just loads of randomly generated levels>

So what kind of games have you guys given up on?

So what kind of games have you guys given up on?

I completely gave up on first person shooters. Especially horror ones. I played Doom, Doom2, Quake, Duke Nuke'em, Half-Life, Rise of the Triad, and a few others, all from beginning to end back in the day. And when I play FPSs nowadays it feels like a re-hash of the old ones. I'm way burned out on those. The only notable exception was the Halo series. Those felt like a breath of fresh air in that genre.

Also, since the rise of MMOs, RPGs feel sort-of empty. Almost like it's a waste or something. It's a strange feeling. Like I shouldn't spend time playing them, cause if I finish them it won't "count"... You know what I mean? hehe

I still play and enjoy them though. But I play just enough to understand the gist of it, then move on.

I'm actually pretty good about finishing FPS games lately, even if most of the time having a person to play co op with is almost a requirement for me to be able to do it  Unfortunately many of my other games are suffering for it though, particularly because of school. Currently on my list to finish is Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, the Jak and Daxter games, and Zelda: Twilight Princess (I've had this one for like 3 years already). Plus Fallout 3, but that one's great even if you spend all your time messing around like I do :D

I try to finish games I enjoying. Even if it means blitzing the last few levels faster than I would if I know theres a chance I'll buy something new shortly.

Fallout 3, Borderlands, Singleplayer campaign in DOW2, My own game ETW, MW2 although you can finish that in about 4 hours on regular it seems, there some of the games Ive finished. Others Im currently playing Tropico 3 I'll do the single player campaign and a few sandbox games then probably just play it now and then.

Mini Ninjas was the last game I had where I nearly finished it but got distracted.. I was on the final castle as well :(

Ya I'm pretty bad for not finishing games. The last game I finished was Uncharted 2, and I'm about to finish MW2 off, prolly tonight. But usually I dont finish games, I tend too lose interest unless it's a really good game. Before those 2 games the last game I beat was Half Life 2 episode 2, which was quite awhile ago, Oh wait, I also beat Killzone 2 not long ago either, I guess I aint too bad at finishin games :P. Like I said, depnds on the game and how epic it is, usually though, I dont beat games, I just play online, more fun.

i hate not finishing games, but it does happen sometimes. most ppl i know never finished gta iv cus it was pretty boring. i also never finished bioshock or mass effect. can't remember why, but i've never felt the urge to pick them up again since.

i think some of its got to do with the value you place in a game. if you've been reading previews and getting excited about a game, then finally get it, u tend to finish it, but if you get it for free, or borrow it off a friend, or arnt too bothered about it, you don't care as much. i have a big pile of about 12 ubisoft games, all still in their plastic wrapping :(

The fact is: I'd LIKE to finish every game I buy. I used to do it all of the time as a kid. Then again, as a kid, all I ever had on my plate was school, a bit of homework, and LOTS of free time to play.

As an adult, time is a precious commodity. I don't always have the luxury of being able to play for extended periods of time. The days of me getting into a RPG like "Skies of Arcadia", which requires a 100 hour commitment, are pretty rare. It is much easier for me to finish a game that is either short, easy, or can be played in bit-sized chunks.

A game like Ghostbusters was fun for me because it was easy enough where I could finish it in a day and didn't have to derail my plans. Apart from that, I've moved over to FPS, puzzlers, & the usual NDS stuff, all of which are designed for short span gaming.

Me getting the time to complete any other type of game pretty much means that I have to tell my family & friends to all go f*** off for a bit. :)

I should make up for that one day. Skies of Arcadia is bloody brilliant.

I am pretty bad about this. I have always been a compulsive non-finisher, rather than someone who finishes every game. I do it with tv shows too, I guess I just don't like things to concretely end.

I don't really finish any singleplayer games that take over 12-16 hours to beat. The last game I finished was Mirror's Edge a couple months ago. What's worst is I usually stop playing at the end of a game. I could make a huge list of games I played until the end and stopped just before, never to go back... Just recently I bought the Hitman pack on Steam and was hooked to Blood Money for a week or so and I got to the last or second last mission and stopped playing. And I have bought 3 more singleplayer games on steam since then, which I haven't even touched yet. Free time is hard to find.

I play L4D and TF2 nightly and love them, but I don't get as much enjoyment out of single player campaigns anymore. If I sit and play one for a few hours I feel like I've wasted time and been cut off from social activity. I don't get that when I am playing multiplayer with friends.

L4D2 is supposed to come out tonight and I hope I can beat at least three campaigns before going to bed.

Have you guys noticed this trend lately in some games where they essentially "ruin" the ending for you on purpose?

Like in the last star wars game. You start out as Darth Vader and you have all your powers and everything. Then when that part is over, you go back to being a newbie character. They did the same with God of War.

I usually play games until I sort-of get what they're all about, then I see no point in keeping on playing. That last invention just makes that even easier on me, whether that's good or bad. What do you guys think about it?

If you have a Wii you should really pick up the Gamecube version. I'm sure that you can find a used copy cheap. The GC version adds on even more stuff than the Dreamcast. I wish that Sega would revisit this game one day. It's so underrated, but I really feel that it deserves a proper sequel.

Well, this can be good if it's done properly. Just look at Metroid. They tend to start Samus pretty juiced, only to have her reduced to scrub after the intro escape scene. In some games, it's annoying. In a game like Metroid, it's kinda... tradition. It wouldn't be Metroid if you didn't have to rebuild your character. I guess it depends. I'd be more upset if they reduced you to scrub and the enemies were unbearably difficult.

I have a nasty habit of getting right up to the last boss fight and then losing interest. I cannot even count the number of game that I have saved at the final save point.

I'm not sure if I just don't want it to end, so I never finish it, or what it is, but that just seems to be the way it goes. RPG's especially i have a hard time finishing. I will get right up to the end and then spend hour leveling my character and looking for all the best items, but I wont end it.

Though there are a few games that I have to say I am glad that I finished. Skies of Arcadia is one of them. A fantastic game that really does deserve another. I still have my Game Cube copy, That's one I don't think I will ever part with.

Yeah, I don't understand why people are bitching about the length of CoD MW2.

Took me 8 hours to complete on hard, and I was thoroughly engaged the entire time.

I'm about 16 hours into GTA4, and I just gave up.

Second that with Assassins Creed 2... if you do most of the side missions, you'll get an easy 25-30 hours out of the game. Although, I know Dragon Age is longer, Assassins Creed is still quite an investment of time... take it from me if you havn't played it yet...

Is it just a linear as the first one? I enjoyed the first installment, but if AC2 is the same in a new setting, I can't really say I'll be inclined to get it.
Although I'm intrigued to know how the story ends. :)

And oh yeah, I have to agree with Mogster on DA:Origins. Ludicrously addictive game imho!

i'm not currently feeling the whole dragon age thing. i know it's bioware, so it probably is awesome, but the generic fantasy setting, massive lord of the rings rip off and un-interesting graphics really make me not want that game.

True, but I think the story makes up a LOT of DA's flaws. Like most of the bioware games actually. To name one: Jade Empire wasn't visually and gameplay wise pleasing to say the least, but the story really kept me playing through the end. :)
Same thing happened with AC come to think of it.

I pretty much feel the same way, I picked up DA and the story is pretty cool but it hasn't really sucked me in like i sort of hoped it would. I think thats the reason why...

Recently the games i find myself really getting in to are XBLA games such as Castle crashers and shadow complex. Classic gameplay, shortish games but simple fun. I feel like I can finish them in a reasonable amount of time and get achievements and stuff. Something like RE5 which i beat, but didnt do much of the bonus stuff... it's just so BIG! I get overwealmed.

I totally agree though that you must be playing the latest games at least for a few hours to get some inspiration and stay on top of your craft.

Unless I start the game and discover I can't stand to play it for more than an hour.

The last game I finished was Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core...

Now I'm going back and getting stuff I missed in the game.

I can't finish a "soloing" game since i discovered the mmorpg in 1999.
There's two reasons for that. One, soloing game aren't multiplayer. Two, they're just bad as hell.
I can't remember a really good rpg, beat'em all (or anything else) for years... It's just boring.

I tend to finish games, unless I can't connect with the story, or there's something about the game that drives me nuts. Example: Too Human. Can't even play that game cause the controls are soooooo bad. Add to that the customization that makes no sense to me at all, and there's a game I will probably never finish. However, I've beat all the other games I've bought over the recent months.

I also won't finish a game if it's too frustrating. Example: Psychonauts. Loved a LOT of that game. it was fun, imaginative, and really just a great game. Till I tried to do anything involving specific movements of my character. Then it was a curse fest. I got to the end, where you have to jump up a lot of shit to escape a rising tide of something, and I kept dying cause I couldn't control the character. He'd go too slow, or jump wrong, or the camera fucked me for the billionth time, or whatever. I quit that game.

But alternating example, Dante's Inferno: Love that game. NOW. But the amount of n00b traps was pathetic. Those should have died with the NES, but apparently some designers think it's cool to have them. Some of those puzzles drove me nuts as well, but I stuck with it, and I'm glad I did. It's a good game.

That happened to me with Final Fantasy 8 & 13. With 8, the main guy was just too obnoxiously emo. I was perfectly willing to cut his wrists for him. I got about 4 or 5 hours from finishing before I couldn't bare him anymore. With 13, the linear gameplay combined with some very generic characters made me put down the game after about a week. People rave about FF13, but I just can't handle it. I'd sooner have my ass sandblasted raw... twice

Just like many here said- free time is something I seriously lack in my life. Finding time to play games is harder by the day. That been said I'll pick up a game maybe once in two weeks and play it for two hours maybe. If it gets me hooked I'll try and finish it, but by all means it's not a priority.

I enjoy short action games for two reasons:
They are easy on the brain. I use up all of my gray cells on work, and I don't need that when I want to relax. Just tell me who/what to kill and I'll get the job done :)
You can play them in short bursts of time with fairly large periods in between.

So to summarize - no I don't finsh most of the games I start. Darksiders was the last I believe. A solid game which I probably wouldn't finish if not for the the great art style.

Now I'm looking forward to Space Marine. Love wh40k universe and art, and it looks it'll be an action packed no brainer - perfect :D

The last game I finished was Splinter Cell Conviction, I make sure that I have time to play video-games even though I love staying active working with 3d stuff. Like every two months or so I have a Xbox 360 LAN-party with my friends to catch up on the latest games, or play the co-op parts of some video games. Every week or so I arrange a "Game-night" where we gather to play video-games, discussing them as we play.

I'm the only guy into the development of video-games though, but as gamers my friends has a lot of interesting questions and stuff to say, about art, mechanics etc. I try to stay active with both 3d-stuff and gaming.

Ditto. I've thought about it a lot too. I think I have this sick anxiety about permanently finishing games I really like. I am actually more likely to finish a game I am only moderately interested in, than a game I love. Exception being fighting games, I polish those off quickly.

Bizarre and weird, no?

When I gave it some thought, I just don't want the game to be over. So I save it for a rainy day, something to look forward to. Sometimes, that rainy day is a year later. I beat all but the last level of DMC in a week or so. 8 months later, I finally sat down and finished it.

I almost always finish a game, but sometimes it takes me time and a round robin of tittles. I don't know why that is. Right now I am between FFXIII and Assassins Creed 2. I am really far in both, and will finish them, but who knows when.
