All the Madmen and Saviour Machine are my two favorite bowie songs, and the happen to be on that album. Bowie in general is awesome though.
typhus: grew up in Carlisle, PA, only about 40 miles north of the MD border. I've also got Minor Threat and Pailhead in my collection so you can say I'm a fan of Ian's work! But the most recent Fugazi album I've heard in Red Medicine, how's the newer stuff compare?

Yeah. It's insane, really. I've got no problem with new music. I'm always loading new sh** onto my iPod. Part of having been a teen in the 80s is that I just seem to get in these dumb moods where all I do is listen to 80s stuff.
I love synth from the likes of Oingo Boingo, Heaven 17, or Devo. My Pat Benatar, David Bowie, & Motley Crue collections are insane. :) Out of 6k MP3s, about 1,300 of them are all 80s stuff. Lots of Freestyle like TKA in there too. Being a Bronx boy, that was pretty big for me as a kid.
I still prefer some more modern stuff to workout or run to though. My current workout playlist has some 311, AFI, Deftones, & Smashing Pumpkins (love Zeitgeist).

I could give you truckloads of epic black metal, but I'll just assume that's not what your asking for, so for epic non black metal:
After Forever (particularily the first two albums, with Mark Jansen)
Angtoria
Aquaria
Avantasia
Ayreon
Bal-Sagoth (ok, sort of black-ish, but super mega epic)
Divercia
Epica
Fairyland (Rhapsody clone, and possibly better than Rhapsody)
Graveworm
Haggard
Hollenthon (called Indiana Jones metal by some)
Kamelot
Luca Turilli
Moonsorrow
Rhapsody.... of fire!!!! (obvious)
Sirenia (first two albums)
Symphony X
Tacere
Therion
Thy Majestie
Tristania (first two albums)
...and Richard Wagner, opera so epic that it's metal
that enough?
wow, ramseus, you pretty much entirely covered the answer there. I was thinking, hmm, maybe I have some, but all the ones on my mind are in your list. :lucky:

Nice list man. Just thought I'd say, besides myself, I think you are one of few people I've seen that actually listen to the Jesus Lizard. If you like them you should check out Tomahawk, a lot of the earlier stuff (because of the guitarist being the same dude) sounds Jesus Lizardish.
Have you checked out the new band the lead singer is in...Qui or something? i haven't but wonder if they're similar...

Btw, anyone hear the new godsmack cover of Led zepplin? It's Terrible.
Good god why must they still exist?! I thought I saw a "best of" compilation from them on itunes and figured they had finally died out in recent years.
In other news…
Ayreon: 01011001; so addictingly kickass. If you ever check out a prog-metal act, buy this (and/or the other albums). Great follow-up to the storyline established in the previous albums, but its not necessary to understand to enjoy the music. As with all Ayreon albums its an interesting who's-who of prog rock/metal and power metal. A+++
Mass Effect Soundtrack, Orange Box Soundtrack, Uncharted Soundtrack. All awesome music. I havent even played Mass Effect (dont have a 360), the music is awesome; better than some movie soundtracks. Greg Edmonson, who did the Firefly tv series soundtrack, also did Uncharted, and its great!
Asobi Seksu... just because occasionally I feel the need to listen to indie pop. Highly recommended, they make some great tunes.

I like to concept to old muse songs and sigur ros - agaetis byrjun album. They make time stand stil and everything around you fade away. :)
If i need motivation to keep working on a piece i use anything with a quick beat. I like songs where it feels like you on a journey and every beat is the next step.

Not bad at all, Autopsy! Don't like all those bands, but I like your taste in music. :)
1. Lamb of God- Wrath is rockin! Total departure from their other stuff, but still fast, and heavy, and bad ass.
2. The Haunted- Versus, rEVOLVEr, and Made Me Do It are sooooo good.
3. The Silent Hill Soundtracks- great stuff to chill, and do some 3d too. Cause sometimes, you just wanna chill. ;)
4. Chimaira- Resurrection
5. Amon Amarth- With Oden On Our Side. Viking metal at it's finest!
6. Cradle of Filth- Godspeed on the Devil's thunder
7. Gojira- From Mars to Sirius
8. Soulfly- Conquer
9. Maiden Heaven A Tribute To Iron Maiden. Not the biggest fan of that band, but the covers on that album are fantastic. they make Maiden sound kick ass again.
10. Slayer- Any album, but especially, South of Heaven. That album, for me, is the ultimate, definitive Slayer album.
11. NIN- The Fragile. Still love the album, We're In This Together is a song I can listen to over and over again.
12. Killswitch Engage- The old stuff, after they got Howard on vocals, it all went down hill. Where's the screaming? Where's the motivational lyrics? It's all love songs, and love songs suck ass.
13. Seemless- The band Jesse from Killswitch started, after he left them. Doesn't sound like Killswitch at all, more to the rock side, than metal. Still kicks ass.
14. Tool. Can't go wrong with any album, although 10,000 days was kind of a disappointment.
15. God Forbid- A bit more like Killswitch WAS when they had balls.
16. As I Lay Dying- Just all around great music.
17. Deftones- It was a really weird, but cool experience to listen to them evolve from Adrenaline, to their latest. (Just read Chi's in a coma? Holy crap..) The song they did with MJK from TOOL was amazing, can't remember the name of it right now though...
18. John Carpenter Soundtracks- The Thing, and Assault on Precinct 13 are AMAZING.
19. Himsa- Rain to the Sound of Panic, is one of my all time favorite songs. SO HARD!!!!
20. Enslaved- Ruun. Incredible black metal (I think that's the label, although I don't really care) Great song writing, great vocals, and lyrics... Just a great album.
So there ya go. That's what I've been listening too of late. Of course the order will change from time to time, but I always listen to Lamb of God, as they kick ass, and remain one of my favorite bands. :D

Lamb of God - Walk With Me In Hell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NvntVb0Q_o&feature=related Fan made vid, since an official one was never made, so just enjoy the song ;)

Poison the Well has a new album? I was just listening to Versions a lot lately and was going to check to see if they had one!!
Edit: Woops didn't click on your link. Thats from the You Come Before You album. Although wikipeidia is saying a new one will be out this year.
mmmm replica listens to good music! i pretty much listen to all of those you mentioned except enslaved and the Sound Tracks.
Its funny. i saw Lamb of God (how i found out about them) on, i think it was their first tour ever under that name (after Burn the Priest) when they opened for Cannibal Corpse / Dimmu Borgir in SF. I loved the show, especially the song o.d.h.g.a.b.f.e! I said "This band is going to be fucking huge!" and my friend said "this band is going to fail miserably" . I ran out and bought the cd the very next day at Aomeba records. There was no way they werent going to kick ass.
So also

-Dillinger Escape Plan
-Sixty Watt Shaman
-Born from Pain

If your fine with not having complete control of what your listening to try out Pandora internet radio if you haven't yet. It allows you to enter a band or song then selects music you should like based on what you enter. This is all I EVER listen to and i love it :D

Pandora is great, but it depends for me on what you put in. I actually found out about The Red Chord from Pandora! because "He Was Dead When i Got here" came up in a playlist not even closely related to "death metal"
I will say its great if, like me, your are a really big fan of Isis/Pelican/Neurosis stuff. Ratatat is a good one to put in too.
When i put Soilent Green in i don't get much like it, but then again Soilent Green is pretty f'ing unique. Entries like that and Pantera are crappy for me for the most part.
Kool Keith / Dr Octagon is another good on for Pandora :).
Good suggestion man. Pandora is sweet.

rv_el, that's a lot of bands I've never heard of, some I have, and listen too, but most I have not. :D Still haven't checked Born From Pain yet, but I will. I got my, now 15 year old, nephew into metal, when he was 12, and now he's always on the lookout for bands he doesn't know. I filled his 32gb zune with nothing but metal. :D Oh, and yeah, that Poison The Well song was what got me into them. I'm normally a "video come lately" kinda metal head, since I'm 33 now, I just don't have the time, or money to go checking out all these bands I've never heard of. My nephew helps keep me semi fresh in the scene these days, though.
Oh yeah, I got my nephew a Pelican record, not sure if they have more than one, cause it's all instrumental stuff, so he can practice writing lyrics for it. He plays bass, and when we saw Amon Amarth in Seattle in October, he was screaming the words so loud, the singer kept pointing at him. We were in the back of the club, btw. I was so proud of him. :D
Marcus- Yeah, that song is hard hitting for sure! Napalm Death's been around for ages, though, and they got a LOT of songs that'll kick you in the teeth. ;)
Seven- I can understand where you're coming from, but to me, 10,000 days really didn't cut it. I feel all their other albums were much better. Aenima was an almost perfect album, for them.
[EDIT] Alright, just found Born From Pain on youtube, and holy crap! Found me a new band to listen too. :D On the hunt for the other bands rv_el mentioned now. So metal....
[EDIT Again!] Alright, rv_el, just checked all those bands you listed, and with very few exceptions, I'm digging them. Amon Tobin will be great stuff to chill too, and do some 3d, same with Xploding Plastix. Most of the other bands are great anytime. :D thanks for the list, man, I've been needing new tunes from bands I haven't heard of before.

Replica: What i did for that list was literally what i was listening to over the past 24 or 32 hours..
Infact the first list is home, the second list was work. And not all of it, but ya know i just grabbed at random what i was listening to... Some i dont listen to all the time ya know. Just happened to be listening right now. I'm listening to Misery Index in my car right now.
So some of those are new to me. Like Dirtly Little Rabbits is like BRAND new. i've only listened to their stuff like not even twice through yet. Its the Clown from Slipknots strange sideband.... really really strange. But i'm down to try things out.
I still dig into new stuff a lot, but i hear ya man. i'm 29 now and it can be really tough. Sometimes i really get into it and find new stuff. Other times i just can't. no time or energy. I listen to a LOT of stuff though so i could recommend quite a bit of stuff. shotgun style ya know.. a few are bound to stick.
So yeah Lamb Of God is on there cause the new album (guitar in In Your Own Words is masterfull!) and to be honest i didn't even start listening to Gojira til like 4 or 5 months ago. Some how i missed those guys! And its right up my alley. I like a lot of really slow heavy sludgy stuff ala Crowbar ( my favorite band), Pelican, Rwake (at times), Down, and Super Joint Ritual... etc....
Born From Pains - WAR album came out right before Dominance War II. Perfect timing. I listen to it every DW. Its a lot like Hatebreed. Sadly the lead singer left a little after that album came out. The new albums lead singer is like the guitarist or something and isn't as good/powerfull.
EDIT: BTW i'm a long time Deftones Fanatic... felt i should say.. I agree. I started at Around the Fur and yeah it was shocking to hear about the coma. I totaly forgot about it until now.

Seven- I can understand where you're coming from, but to me, 10,000 days really didn't cut it. I feel all their other albums were much better. Aenima was an almost perfect album, for them.
I agree with you completely about Aenima.
But really? Lateralus is better than 10,000 days? I would say that if I were to put them in order of greatness it would be
1. Aenima
-. 10,000 days
-. Undertow
4. Saliva
5. Opiate
6. Lateralus
I think 10,000 days was what they wanted Lateralus to be. I'm not one to believe that a band gets worse with age. Aenima still rings true for me as an epic album. 10,000 days is a tie for me with undertow. It's really hard for me to make a decision on which is better. All of their albums are really strong and there's not one album I can't listen beginning to end without skipping a beat.

Hahahaaa, Seven. I guess I should have prefaced that statement by saying, ANY tool album is head and shoulders above most other bands, and I can listen to anything they've made, and love it. But FOR ME, compared ONLY to tool's other albums, it was their weakest. I love Lateralus, aenima, and undertow, 3 great albums. The point is, Tool = awesome. I couldn't really put the albums in any kind of order (except maybe alphabetical ;) ).
rv_el, I really like Jamey Jasta's (Or however you spell his name) voice, and lyrics. When I first heard "I will Be Heard" I was thinking, "this is the coolest song I've heard in years!!". Instant Hatebreed fan. I like the slower tempo, and chunky guitars of most hardcore bands. It keeps me from breaking my neck headbanging to only faster songs :D
On the Deftones thing, when I got their first album, Adrenaline, all my friends were all about Korn. It's funny to see how Deftones really started to experiment with sounds after that album, but Korn kinda stayed the same. I wasn't too into the change, at first, but then I really started liking it. And that's when I heard Cult of Luna, another band with similar sounds. I love those guys. The song, "Leave Me Here" is one a return too often. The video for that one was amazing on a technical level since it was all shot with a still camera... But I ramble on. :D
Anyway, it's nice talking music, I haven't been able to do this in a LONG time. It's also nice to know I'm not the only guy in 3D that's into metal in a big way, not just "the occasional" metal song... No offense to anyone who feels that way, just saying... Now, if I could just find someone to talk horror movies with. :D

If you like Deftones then you should check out Team Sleep fronted by Chino Moreno. It's sort of like Deftones but a bit softer in tone and more melodic.

Replica: yeah i really dig Hatebreed. If you like Jasta, he actually ended up teaming up with my favorite muscician Kirk Windstien (Crowbar, Down) for a side project called Kingdom of Sorrow. Check it out. Its like a mix of the 2 bands (hatebreed and crowbar) and is very heavy and slower at points. Its very much a side project. But great for working out :). Since their other bands are great for that too.
Also Jasta sings (1 of 2) in Icepick.
Team Sleep is cool. I really like the song Paris arm

I got team sleep's album, very good eclectic sounds on it (I never use that word...), but I can't listen to it for too long, cause I end up just zoning out. :) Also, not to sound too emo, but it reminds of times I'd rather forget, cause I had it playing all the time.
I got kingdom of sorrow for my nephew's zune, guess I should get it back, and listen to it.
Oh, and Crowbar was the first cd I ever bought. Can't remember which album it was, but I had never heard of them before that. It was pretty much a "blind-buy" which I used to do a lot when I was younger. I just keep forgetting to check them out anymore.
BTW, Cult of Luna's "Leave Me Here" video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6vv6CKtRWY They change sounds pretty often, even in the middle of songs, going from screaming noise, to softer more melodic stuff. This song in particular speaks to me, but nobody really wants to hear about that. :) The video, like I said was shot with a still digital camera, in 5 second chunks, and stitched back together in the computer. Really cool on the technical side of things

If you like Crotchduster check out a REALLY old Canadian punk band called Dayglo's Abortion.
Love that new Lonely Island album (Jizz in my pants, dick in a box, on a boat).
Then the same stuff I've been listening to for a while:

So, were talkin about Tool?????, thats my band of choice, i like almost all of the songs from these guys from Aenima till 10kDays, their music is almost ethereal I think for me personaly and due to the most painful experience ever, 10kDays is the best song ever, specially the part whe MJK prays for his dead mother, so this song expresses almost how I feel now, but yeah, all of Tool is amazing, one day im gonna do a tattoo in my arms with the Lateralus eyes, so Im a big fan of em, also Alice in Chains, some Robi Draco Rosa, some Underworld and on, and on, and on....

Zombie thread. BRAINS!!!! ;)
Right now, I'm beating the hell out of U2's "No Line on the Horizon" - Love the hell out of this album. "Get On Your Boots" actually makes sense in context of the whole album. "Stand Up Comedy" is my current fave though.
They played a free, televised mini-concert on Friday at Fordam University. That's literally a 10 minute jog from my apartment. Shame it was only for students. Grrrr....
Other fairly random individual songs in frequent rotation for me right now:
- Colin Hay, "Waiting for my real life to begin"
- Shirley Manson, "Samson & Delilah"
- Korn, "Twisted Transistor"
- Serj Tankian, "Praise the lord and pass the ammunition"
- Disturbed, "Stupify"
- Danny Elfman, "The Little Things"
- My Chemical Romance, "Teenagers"
- Martika, "Toy Soldiers"
Oddly, the one song that's been plaguing my brain at the oddest times has been Joe Esposito's "You're the Best Around" from Karate Kid. They've been playing that song so much on TV commercials that it's stuck in my head like a stupid sitcom theme song. :p
@Marcus: I know what you mean about Freestyle. Must be a NY thing. I've got a couple hundred Freestyle songs. Great to blast in the car on a hot summer day. TKA was the sh** back in the day too. I can still sing "Maria" word for word. I was a bit of a bigger Lisa Lisa fan though.
About the only freestyle song I have a hard time listening to is Nocera's "Summertime Summertime". There's nothing particularly bad about the song, but her accent is so thick & distracting that I usually laugh til & cough blood. :)

typical playlist (when working/creating) would be
Pirates of the Carribean - At worlds End soundtrack
Chillie Peppers - Stadium Arcadium
Foo Fighters - either Echoes or disc 1 of In your Honor
Dave Mathews Band - Before these Crowded Streets
the Dark Knight Soundtrack
Live - the Distance to Here
the rest of the time its Team Fortress 2 soundtrack, cause really, why else would you be on the computer?
well aside from that one other reason.....
for DW IV, depending a little on the theme, i'm expecting
the Tea Party - Edges of Twighlight / Transmission
Hancock soundtrack

unless i go with a more upbeat design, then its Queen all the way
It varies I suppose; but this is what I listen a lot to lately:
- Murcof : Some of the best electronics I've ever heard really
- Bad Sector
- Jonny Greenwood
- Kindzadza
- Colleen
- Gridlock
- Frontline Assembly
- Frog Pocket
- Opeth
- John Wiese: Now, this is the loudest shit ever.

I tend not to listen to music while working. I am way more productive listening to podcasts, or even having tv shows and movies playing in a small window at the corner of my screen. I am easily able to both work and watch at the same time, it's maximum efficiency!
This is pretty representative of what I listen to, even though I usually listen to music in transit(on my iPod), the bit that gets picked up by last.fm does well at showing favorites.
From my Last.Fm (no particular order):

- Evergrey (In Search of Truth)
- Demons & Wizards
- Cynic
- Zero Hour
- Kamelot (The Black Halo)(after being gone for awhile, I lost my pass and just created a new account, in case of confusion on the quoting of "me.")
I listen to a shit-ton of music, and am obsessed with finding more and new and etc. This is all bands and albums I have listened to in the last week or two. So my listening lately is divided into 2 arenas.
1: Metal
- Cynic - Traced In Air
- Esoteric - The Maniacal Veil
- Nile - Ithyphallic
- Faceless - Planetary Duality
- Abysmal Dawn - Programmed to Consume
- Decrepit Birth - Diminished Between Worlds
- Blotted Science - The Machinations of Dementia
- Spiral Architect - A Sceptic's Universe
- Therion - Gothic Kabbalah
- Jeff Loomis - Zero Order Phase
- Devin Townsend - Terria, Ziltoid The Omniscient
- Wolves In The Throne Room - Two Thrones
- Negura Bunget - Om
2: Independent (pop/rock/etc)
- Sleepy Eyes of Death
- Haale
- Technicolor Fabrics
- Another Cynthia
- Wet Confetti
- Reporter
- Dirty Mittens
- Point Juncture, WA.
- Grand Hallway
- Helio Sequence
- Drakes Hotel

Better in Oingo Boingo or as a solo performer. His scoring is distinct, but lacks the range of somebody like a Michael Kamen, who's stuff is a bit bland, but much more varied.

Yeah, it is perspective. I thought Decemberunderground was decent. But if I think about Black Sails, or Shut your Mouth and Open Your Eyes while I listen to it, I just hear Fall Out Boy. Its amazing and even supplies cue sheets so you can cut up all the tracks into seperate songs.
Each week has a special guest who creates a mix.. so far there are nearly 70 weeks worth of 90 min FREE MUSIC for download.
Genres include, Dubstep, techno, ambient, idm, hip hop, drum n bass, glitch,
which such a wide variety of mainly underground electronic music, its well worth tapping into.

I just scored the soundtrack for Blaze Blue and I found it to be just okay and nothing truly special. I was hoping for so much more since I loved the soundtracks to the Guilty Gear Games, especially the heavy metal and vocal versions.
That aside I've been listening to Asobi Seksu. I've recently discovered this little indie band from NY and I'm totally in love. Their music has a crisp and almost whimsical feel to it. Almost like Mogwai mixed with a little of Zero 7 and Ozma.
Make sure to check out these two videos to see if you dig them as much as I do:

I bought the new Muse album The Resistance. The album itself is well produced and is right up there with their prior efforts. Some of the songs take a bit to grow on you while other smack you in the face with their immediate awesomeness. Terrific piece of work by the group and a worthwhile purchase.:D

Also been listening to a lot of NIN these days as well. It helps get me through some bad days. One of my all time fav NIN songs:

My mood is shifting right now, and I cant really think of anything else I haven't already posted...
[EDIT] Oh yeah, I forgot to mention I haven't listened to Muse in ages... Just forgot about them, even though they're one of my favorite straight up rock bands of today. I'll have to pick up their latest soon. Thanks for the reminder, Marcus. ;)

wow. can't believe I havn't seen this thread yet! I love listening to music while doing work.. I listen to absolutely everything.. depends on the mood. Its great to see some hardcore/metal lovers in here! If i need to get a lot of work done I find stuff that is almost melodic ambient is best, for example explosions in the sky, or God is an astronaut, or The Album Leaf... all great stuff thats non intrusive and conducive to work. but I also have my hardcore days where I'll def. get down to some august burns red, or alesana, or some silverstein.. I'm definitely going to have to check out some of these links! Whomever started this thread is genius.

Soooooo.... while we're all waiting for the new comicon brief.... might as well resurrect an old thread.
Apart from my usual faves, I've been itching for new(ish) stuff that sounds older. I've had the Ting Tings & La Roux in heavy rotation lately.
