Tutorial assistance.

I asked over at CGTalk but alas no help.

I need to create smoke I don't know how to do this and I have searched everywhere and all the tutorials don't work for me or I don't know what I am doing when it comes to smoke.

Anyone know how to do this as I need it to be editable for what I need it for.

Thanks GA.

more info please:

Have you considered particle systems?
IF they won't serve your purpose why?
what do you mean editable?
Editable texture, size, flow, scatter, shape, volume?

Is this for a game or for offline rendering?
If its a game, what game engine?

Don't know much about particle systems so this would be the first time I have played with modifiers so when I say I don't know what I am doing I mean just that.

Editable like the flow or making a twirl in it at one point or different color shaders in the smoke adding flashes, size, flow, scatter, shape, volume.

For a game but this would be a sequence of rendering png's.

Thanks :) didn't know what to ask exactly since I am new to these methods.

AH ok. yeah that makes more sense now.

Ok particle systems are your way to go, even if you want it as just an image sequence in the end product.

Best suggestion, since you are starting off, is to open up the help file for whatever your 3d art program of choice is, and search for "particles". Then work with creating a simple particle system then adding in its physical modifiers like gravity or wind or vortices etc.

Most particle systems have differing options for color changing and size change etc.

There are also 2d particle creation programs out there for just this sort of thing, though how free they are is another story. I've played with this one http://www.wondertouch.com/pillusion3.asp
and it works pretty well

Some(many) game engines have a built in particle system and editor of some capacity, unreal, torque, and I'm pretty sure Unity does too.
often the particle system built into a game will be more efficient than doing an animated texture, unless you pack it really well.

hope this helps a bit

Alrighty so this is how far I got.

smoke.rar - 0.01MB (http://www.zshare.net/download/692834773b0af06f/)

The file is 3dsmax2009 and I have played around with the emitters but I can't figure out the settings to straighten it out and make it look say like soft hot coffee smoke.

I need it as if it was alive that's the control I need how would I go about that? It only goes in one direction how do I manipulate it to twist turn and change colors maybe add bursts here and there, think the gremlins when he jumps into the pool that's the type of bursts I am talking bout.

Thanks for your help so far Vailias purchasing software like that is not an option for me:(.

I don't remember the exact details, but I think if you use a ramp shader in the alpha channel of the smoke's shader you might be able to get a more steam like look compared to a more smokey look.
