Hi this is a model a I've been working on recently, I'm starting the texture on the low poly. I'd appreciate any suggestions for color combos or patterns etc. That I can put on her to spice her up

On a side note I'm recently unemployed so I'd really appreciate any job leads, especially around dallas, tx

This is just kickass, i remember it on cgchat, im in love with it!
Gj! For color combo's i would use yellow and red on this one probably with slighty small parts in brown.
If not maybe use metalic Red + white, my favorite.

superb work! great design and EXCELLENT modeling, both high and low-poly. my color theory kinda sucks so i hesitate to suggest color combos.
for the hi-poly, how'd you get such clean details? i'd love to see a wireframe. thanks for posting!

The wing like structure on the back, is there going to be some sorta transparent glowing wings coming out of there? Currently I think the wing pieces take away from the flowing curves of the model and are too angular. Unless you are planning on bringing in curvy sorta wing areas.
As for colors maybe add some gold in there. and instead of blue in the glowing areas try red like Tryforce said..maybe try to break the colors up too like in the ab area and legs to add contrast.

Thanks guys, I did some quick color experiments, I'd really appreciate any feedback or possibly some color drawovers.
makoa: Do you want to see the wires for the high or low? As for the details their just a bunch of floaties.
Twindragon: You read my mind, there will be jets emitting from them. Their outline will vaguely resemble wings.

I thought the low was the high, nary a sharp angle in sight.
I think I like the fourth one the most, I like how the lower areas are darker in that one, plus my opinion is always biased towards blues and cool colours.

She's looking really awesome. I can't wait to see the texturing.
I prefer 5 because it's got great contrast and it's different. The red and gold looks too much like Iron Man imho, though that's not too bad a thing :)

onelung: Not sure yet, what do think?
East: No problem here's the wires, plus the tech info. Currently 10465 tris will be about 11k when done. 2048 textures for the body and 1024 for the head which includes some parts of her helmet.
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t285/elscorchohm/ValaLowWires.jpg
ShadyD: I sculpetd her head and body in Mudbox and everything else in max using smoothing groups and floaties
Kalango: Dunno might give it a try.
Frozan: Actually those colored variats are the low poly and so is this one.
Thanks for all the compliments and suggestions. I used all the feedback I got, some ref I found and my own personal tastes to come up with this color sceme. What do you guys think?
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t285/elscorchohm/ValaLowProgress2.jpg
this is a very technically high quality work you have here. i think the colors could use even more variation but the illuminating parts should be either blue or orange, not both. the inside suit could be lot darker so that it creates a contrast with the hard surface parts. i think the legs could be a tad bit longer. the hands could be a bit bigger also.

This is some really awesome work man! Glad to see you're finishing it.

@El Scorcho - Hey man, I remember this awhile ago on CGChat. Nice to see you finishing it up here. looking very nice, keep it up.
ShadyD: I sculpetd her head and body in Mudbox and everything else in max using smoothing groups and floaties
what is floaties El Scorcho?
and u'r using smoothing groups with turbosmooth on her or not? :paper:
El Scorcho
11-12-2007, 02:00 PM
Thanks for the feedback guys.
vied: I'm not using turbosmooth I'm just using smoothing groups. Floaties are pieces of geometry that float just above the main mesh. They create the illusion that that shape is cut in to the main geometry.
Some texturing progress and a pathetic atempt at lighting, been spending most of my free time trying to learn how to swim. Which is pretty hard if you wait until your adult to do so.

well bud, i suppose you could always do 2 version, one before battle, and one after, with some rad cuts and destruction going on.
As of now it's looking good, though i see you falling back into the color's your comfortable with, which to me makes it blend in with your beautiful DW2 piece, and not stand out so much.
I like the dark patterned material you have going on underneath the armor.
I also agree about the tiny hands/ long forarms.
last thing i can think of is the glows are a bit overwhelming. They're placed throughout, but are so bright that the character gets a tad lost, and the glows become more powerful. Maybe toning them down a tad, or letting them be gradients, from soft to bright?
Any who, just a bunch of rambling, looking good, can't wait to see her finished.
Japhir
11-12-2007, 04:12 PM
that's looking great! i love the texture of the material that goes under the armour and the lighty bits :D she does have a rather scary look on her face though, maybe either widen the iris or lower the upper eye lid 'cause this is pretty creepy. overall great work man!
keep it up!

onelung: Thanks for the feedback, your totaly right. I've been so busy trying to listen to everybody's feedback on this forum and Cgtalk, that I forgot about that. So I made this color variant, still needs plenty of work. Oh and I increased the size of her hands 5%.
Japhir: I hope I fixed it with a gloss map i made.

Marcus Dublin, Slythis, Ramseus, butt_sahib, Ged, miezis, Tweaker, Miguelito, Fishypants and Duranial; Wow thanks guys didn't think so many people would like her so much:)
BuroKun; Hey if you live in the dallas area, we should. Would be really funny to see a bunch of inept artists at a local La Fitness flopping about:lol:
MM; Thanks will see what I can to fix that.
Steel Style; Back when I started her it was just for fun. Now that I'm going to truly finish her it's for a portfolio piece. I needs a JOB :)
Richard; Thanks man, the a@s is very important. I think that'll break some of the flow and design on her back though.
ThatDon; Thanks for the crit, will do:)
_tdc_; Thanks for the crits, will see what I can do to fix that.
Rasmus Holmgren; Depends on what you think high is:) She sits at 10500 tris right now. Could be lower but I don't have any budgets so......ha.
-JL-; Yea they were nice, but they didn't work well:).
Jacky-Boy; Thanks Jack, I'll try that.

The whole model looks excellent Scorcho. On the lips issue I'd probably go with a darker tone to compliment that great metal texture you got going. Great stuff man.
Excellent looking model, El Scorcho. Liking it alot and its very professional looking :)
one suggestion thought. It has very plain colors. Either this steely looking or blue shade. The lights and 'armor color', look a bit strange to me, as in, there's very little color in overral. If you want, you could make greyscale layer of the turqoise armor part and try how it would look with different colors, just to test, it infact might look nice if that was different color, that or the lights, but I kinda love the blue lights, they rock :)
miezis
04-28-2008, 04:55 AM
ace!!! i agree that lip tone should be a bit darker. deto has a point too, i would suggest you make round shapes with one tone of blue and streaks like on her sides and arms with other/or different color, like yellow! :)
i myself tend to overuse blue/yellow combination! :lucky:

This model is really amazing man, I love this idea of floaties, can't wait to use them myself. I would steer away from that flying shot, at least the way it stands. It looks like you used directional motion blur in Photoshop and it makes her look as though she's going exactly perpendicular to the camera, but that doesn't match the pose. Also, the exhaust from the jetpack isn't even in the same ballpark quality-wise as the rest of the model, IMO the blur and exhaust distract from an awesome piece of work. I am totally inspired by your work, but totally uninspired by the fact that you're unemployed, WTF! If you can't get work with your skills, I don't stand a chance.
Good luck!

ianllanas; Thanks dude, I cut those problem areas out entirely. As for being unemployed, that's probably because I haven't started applying anywhere yet. Awesome work El Scorcho, my only nitpick would have to be with your UV layout, It seems you have some of the major chunks positioned on a 20-degree angle. This sort thing may come off as a bit trivial but it would drive a few texture artist nuts:s. I personally think it’s better to have UV chucks sitting as vertically or horizontally as possible since it makes the texturing process easier. Anyways nitpick aside it’s a “terrific” piece that any artist would love to have grace there portfolio, good luck with the job hunt and keep us posted!:thumb:

this work is excellent, the renders are also so clean and crisp and on the first few there's a neat black line around them that really makes them pop out of the page! any chance you could let us all in on your secret?

Dude, I love the new pose, it adds to her femininity, she's got a lot of angles going on and that pose helps to balance her out. I would narrow the eyes and furrow the brow abit, she looks maybe scared or surprised, maybe it's determination, but anyway it's intense. I saw that you applied for the character artist position at id, best of luck, I hope that you get it! I'm mean how sweet would that be? They are one of the best game companies out there, and IMO the best as far as character art goes (tied w/ Epic) and they're in Dallas! Looking forward to seeing your characters in Doom4!
