Theme:
Mini Moo Fighters - DS/PSP Spec Animal Fighters

Brief:
Imagine a farmhouse wrestling ring, pigs versus chickens. Or a backwood's deathmatch cage, the squirrel style versus fox form. Or better yet, imagine a mother nature sponsored, street-fighter esque, no-holds barred Battle Royale.
Dogs versus cats versus turtles versus elephants versus panda versus monkey. Pick your animal. Choose your weapons (if any). And deck your critter out for the ultimate showdown. May the best Mini Moo Fighter win!

This is another back-to-the-basics low spec DS/PSP style comp. It's going to be a quick comp, but the specs are low enough that time shouldn't be an issue for anyone. 650 Triangles, and a 256 diffuse texture. Alpha and Self-Illumination (fullbright/glow maps) are allowed, but normal/bump/spec are not. This is not a next gen competition, this is a get-yer-keister-painting competition.

For concept art, we are looking for the same, but in 2d . As always, Backgrounds are optional. Pedestals are optional. Texturing/coloring is optional. Basically... everything is optional. This challenge is here for those desiring to practice their art and receive friendly advice from fellow artisans. So as mentioned in mini comp #1-5, keep it easy, keep it quick, and keep it real. Good Luck!

Please do not make a new thread for your entry. Keep all w.i.p shots in this specific thread.

The Specs:
- 650 triangles maximum
- 1x256 diffuse
- Optional bonus maps: 1x256 alpha/transparency, 1x256 fullbright/selfillum/glow

Ups, really sorry.  Yeah, i knew that conceptart.org not create a contest like that, that just my fault to write the text like that. I'm very sorry about that. :( :o I make this concept only for this great contest. Cheer and goodl luck for everyone who join this contest. :thumb:

I like you pigman bryanh I like the ogres from warhammer and he seems like that weeeeeee. I would suggest a weapon with a heavier end... Like a Halberd or Hammer something that causes big oweees.

kessler - looks good! I like the anteater idea! He looks a little monochromatic though--maybe you could introduce some 'focus' color somewhere to help break it up a bit/direct the eye?

ok, my hat's in the ring.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2020/1919771595_4f8955e5d1_o.jpg
This is Little Boy. He's an over large gorilla that carries bombs and explosives with him into battle. He's invulnerable to explosions which is why they are his favored weapons. He takes his name from the WWII era nuke he carries with him on his back. No one knows for sure if the bomb is inert after this long, but Little Boy hasn't tried to trigger it yet. It's sort of his totem in a way.

I might do some more sketching on him but the concept is mostly there. Good start so far everybody. Miezis, I really like your rude duck! It's like he's glowing with rage.

man you have great pencil work. Will you end up painting this later?

brian_h
11-11-2007, 07:47 PM
Unfortunately, the final appears to be the weakest of the images you sketched...primarly, I think, since the feet look simply splayed apart and equal and not offset as a moving creatures would be. The sketches also had alot more dimension throughout the character...this may be primarily since the second arm is being cut off by the frame in the final...it detracts a bit and makes it seem a bit more like and after thought or you weren't sure what to do with the arm. This is looking great but I just prefer some of things going on in the sketches. Keep up the good work.

B

EricElwell
11-11-2007, 10:40 PM
yeah, I would have to agree... when I first saw your post, I felt like that was the weakest pose of your sketches. I can't really tell what's going on with the ground/feet??? The intensity of the face is great, the rendering is nice .. I just think you could have gone with one of your other poses and compositions. cool though!

dkvdeeto
11-11-2007, 11:47 PM
mogster : sorry there, i chose the ninja raccoon cause it was simple & cliche, ......good luck on the comp though .......

I like eeryone's ideas so far!

little boy is a favorite.. great, precise pencilwork.. i agree with some of the crits, but i probably just want to see more of that finely drawn arm and grumpiness of the gorilla.. maybe a little more overdrawing would be nice too.

keep up the work! i will have to hurry.. but currently trying to still get a mesh up and running too ;-)

cool piece with the toad and the rabbit...only thing is that tonally much of it is the same...its pushing into the background a bit especially on the rabbit side with the fist glow. Just seems to be competing too much. Great piece and nice execution.

kw3k, looks really cool! I especially like the form of the frog, but I really do feel that the scene is very flat in values. Sometimes I just drop a hue/saturation layer over my scene and drop the saturation to 0 to see if things are still registering correctly. Then work from there. Anyway, very cool!

ok... this just for kicks..

nice raccoon brian_h, its got a bit of sly with that mask.

The frog vs hare is good but the background is stealing the show, I know your working on it but my idea would be to cool the background off and keep the action warm and see how it looks.

peter_john
11-15-2007, 07:40 PM
brian_h, EricElwell and others, thanks for the crits so far. I mulled over it for a couple days and started reworking Little Boy. Instead of getting gummed up in a background for now I switched to doing a straight up character image, similar to one of my older sketches. Here's the meat:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2262/2036455664_14f2961e8c_o.jpg
It's still in progress, so far I've been pushing some values around over a pencil/ink sketch. I kind of like how the greys are handling so far but I might do something limited with color. We'll see.
