Theme:
Mini Moo Fighters - DS/PSP Spec Animal Fighters

Brief:
Imagine a farmhouse wrestling ring, pigs versus chickens. Or a backwood's deathmatch cage, the squirrel style versus fox form. Or better yet, imagine a mother nature sponsored, street-fighter esque, no-holds barred Battle Royale.
Dogs versus cats versus turtles versus elephants versus panda versus monkey. Pick your animal. Choose your weapons (if any). And deck your critter out for the ultimate showdown. May the best Mini Moo Fighter win!

This is another back-to-the-basics low spec DS/PSP style comp. It's going to be a quick comp, but the specs are low enough that time shouldn't be an issue for anyone. 650 Triangles, and a 256 diffuse texture. Alpha and Self-Illumination (fullbright/glow maps) are allowed, but normal/bump/spec are not. This is not a next gen competition, this is a get-yer-keister-painting competition.

For concept art, we are looking for the same, but in 2d . As always, Backgrounds are optional. Pedestals are optional. Texturing/coloring is optional. Basically... everything is optional. This challenge is here for those desiring to practice their art and receive friendly advice from fellow artisans. So as mentioned in mini comp #1-5, keep it easy, keep it quick, and keep it real. Good Luck!

Please do not make a new thread for your entry. Keep all w.i.p shots in this specific thread.

The Specs:
- 650 triangles maximum
- 1x256 diffuse
- Optional bonus maps: 1x256 alpha/transparency, 1x256 fullbright/selfillum/glow

Final Submission:
You can submit your finals here:

Are opacity maps allowed? A rooster would be easier to make within our polygon budget if I could use opacity maps for the feathers. Cock-a-doodle-deadly.

mini-moo = baby animals?

vied
11-04-2007, 09:13 PM
yup.. what does mini moo stands for ?
is it like austin power mini me perhaps ? :inocent:

blankslatejoe
11-04-2007, 09:14 PM
doesn't need to be baby, just animal fighters. 'mini' refers to DS style specs.
Personally, I'm going with a small animal just because it's fun, but it's not a requirement.

I have no idea where the 'mini moo' name came from--it just sprang up as a phrase in the next comp thread and seemed to really stick with people!

and pictures of baby animals are cute. so that's why I put them all over the brief.

alpha maps = opacity maps.

yep, they're allowed. So is glow. The 'higher spec' maps are not allowed though (specularity, bump, normal, environment/reflections, etc)

does it have to be cute or scary?
can we make the chibby one?

i definitely exciting with this one! but i haven't got a clear picture yet... :D

blankslatejoe
11-04-2007, 10:41 PM
it doesnt have to be cute or scary. It can certainly be chibi if you want.

basically the theme is 'make an animal fighter', so long as you've got that, you should be good!

I was thinking about going a gun route too--with a Guerrilla/rambo style froggie. Now I'm thinking sumo rat.

basically the theme is 'make an animal fighter', so long as you've got that, you should be good!

Does that mean Just a animal( maybe a bit agressive) will do or does it need human features?

blankslatejoe
11-05-2007, 08:32 AM
It doesnt need to have 'human features'..you could do just a plain aggressive animal if you wanted. There's nothing wrong with that so long as it looks like it could hold its own!

The fighter criteria opens it up though for all the people who have ever wanted to see a monkey in a judo gii, or a pug dog in shining armor, or fish-in-a-tank with miniguns strapped to the glass.

Actually, that last one's a pretty cool idea..

ramseus- Do it, enter!

vikkie- I agree, the biker turtle would definitely be the most interesting. Good idea
andrei - cute, he's got a nice style to him already

ryuju - cool--i like the irony of having the cheetah furs on him. I'm not too sure I'm sold on the hoof hands though..they look like they would be a little weird...but I'm not sure anything I could suggest would work better..

tryforce - awesome! you're cruising a long quick!

japhir - what you're describing sounds a little like mop's tarsier: http://www.ldaustinart.com/paul/index.php?page=3dart&id=tarsier
It might be worth looking at for reference on how to handle the fur and such. Goodluck!

I'll try and get some sort of model up for my sumo-rat tonight!

blankslatejoe
11-05-2007, 07:37 PM
renaisandi - great concept! I love it!

shady d - i like the idea a lot, but he seems a bit 'rigid' right now--maybe you could hunch over his head/neck a little and give him a bit more of a brute's trapezius to REALLY push that bull-ness.

tryforce - i agree with shady, it's a bit tall. I love the paintwork so far though--can we get a close up of the face?

mattia--karate pig!! :)

tacit - that's hilarious, I love it!

inpw - I like it- I hope you keep the topheavy proportions/big-thick-mane in the model Who cares if youve done three deformed models so far--if that's the style you like, go for it!

BoBo living vicariously through you Joe? Just don't make him have a pot belly.

Hah! Here's what I've got so far--It's not a sumo rat-- it's a sumo naked mole rat. Or at least it will be, once I paint him. First I got to optimize the uglybits and shave about 80 polies.

Hey Guys, Great stuff everyone! I'm gonna jump in on this one, I did a
quick sketch on the table at dinner and came home and did a final version. Heres what I cam up with.....

I wanted todo a pig, that was my first thought. Second, was like a early prize fighter/ toughman contest fighter..... Dudley from street fighter and Butterbean came to mind.......

2d isn't really my thing, but I gotta start somewhere..... I'd like hear any and all thoughts, thanks guys!

BiG ToE

simple_minded: run with it. But as you model it, you could always play with the spacing of the legs. Thinking closer together might give it a bowling pin feel, which could be cool seeing as he is a boxer just waitng to get punk drunk and fall over.

andrei313 : Very solid model you've got there! Nice flow and form, good! Though one crit... He has only one leg ;)
Haha, thanks. I wanted to make the legs really short and small (exagerated) so I didn't see a reason to put any space between then (also saves polys). I even considered finishing the legs in one vertex but it looks to sharp and I think this is better. You'll see 2 legs when the texture will be done.
That is also the pose he will be into for the final presentation (maybe I'll add a slight head turn and the arms a little bent). He'll seat in the corner of a rig with the arms over the... not sure what they are called... the ropes. I think I'll model that next to get a better idea of where I'm heading with the style.

sage, it's nice. I'd go with a bigger head though. I also think that the body is scary but the face is cute and friendly so this is a little confusing too.

Basically a Goliath Beetle/Samurai/Yakuza creature... he should have some pretty swanky japanese style "sleave" tattoos on his arms. :p

But yeah Im hoping I can make it work with the 650 tris.

wow..you guys have sure been busy!

kiril - plleease go with the heavy metal cock..tyats awesome! I love the bayonette

hntrluc - nice painting!

vikkie - mesh looks good--im looking forward to textures!

typhus - rad, i love the 'heavy' look to him

andrei - im not sure the one leg thing will work...I think you might want two so that the character can walk, theoretically, if put into a game..how will it move right now otherwise?

sage - looks good, get to modeling! :)

DARKSUN--- I just wanted to clarify something; are we allowed 3 maps? diffuse, alpha/transparency & fullbright/selfillum/glow?

That's correct, all at 256x256 pixels.

japhir - I like the colors and the upper half, but the feet feel a little 'thick' to me right now. I think maybe they should be more thinner to match the rest of the gecko?

tryforce - sweet! Man, you're fast. The closeup looks good too, great work!

zabuza - unwrappings a pain, but bigtoe has you on the right track! Goodluck!

MBT - man, that already has a ton of charm. I hope you stick to the proportions for the model.

JL - I think you might run out of polies pretty quick, judging by how many you threw into just the sword. The swordblades might work well as an alpha mapped plane though...then the beetleshell can really have some nice curves.

master of the fork - welcome aboard!

whew...did I miss any other questions?

Should turn out fine. I'm just hoping I can make good use of the 256 texture well enough... probably do an approach similar to stuff in WoW... lost of reuse, for example 1 limb texture that I'll use for all.

Sweet texture so far HntrLuc :) I can't wait to start texturing too.

andrei - im not sure the one leg thing will work...I think you might want two so that the character can walk, theoretically, if put into a game..how will it move right now otherwise?

I can see your point now. I took the advice and I modeled them. They are still very close together but they bend and also move :) ... I'm happier with it this way even if I had to sacrifice other areas to bring the count back to 650, I don't know what I was thinking before :o
As you can see I also made the little ring and also played with the camera and pose... I like it so I'll unwrap and start texturing soon.

Thanks for the comment. What I have in mind is really close to the model right now so I won't spend more time on the model and start texturing. Thanks anyway. If it feels off after I'm done with the texture I'll consider it ;)

Congrats on finishing TryForce. I guess all I can say is good luck with the voting/fight :)

Vikkie I would make the flames a little more saturated and also add some more contrast to the entire texture. Some more detail on the face will help too.

sage it looks good so far. It might be hard to fix the seam at the arms if they are not attached to the body so maybe you can weld them there. Waiting to see how you will manage to make the hands/claws the way you wanted them.

I Suggest using alphamaps for his claws, you got the tri's to spare =).
1 tri per claw, that means you can have about
16 claws.. 8 if you want to do it nicely.

lol funky animation, Vikkie.

Andrei313, Hehe Sage's arms are fine, don't worry about them being detached. It only saves poly's as long as his textures don't wrestle too much at the armpit nobody will really notice it.
And im curious on your texture =) so get to it! :)

I think I am done with the modeling. I made the arms 4 sided and got rid of an edge loop on the legs. Added the geometry for the furry neck and the hands I'm going to try to do with and alpha and see how that goes. I'm thinking off add alpha mapped pupils like it was done in warcraft 3 to see how it looks. The head has a mouth as well. I still have to optimize the model and get rid of any edges I don't need so I'll be trying to add his three fangs as well, George lost his left top fang I imagine in a fight. Thanks for the comments. The fur is meant to cover the seams at the arms as well. Lets see how that goes. Done for today heading off to bed since I have to work tonight driving a forklift. ;)

Well here's another update of about 1 hour more modelling... its getting there but it doesn't quite have the correct look yet, its a bit blocky looking still... luckily its at 513 tri's so I have quite a bit left.

http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa271/zanuah/MC6_MushiBushi_wip02.jpg

Andrei313 :: Thanks! And I'll try. :)

HntrLuc :: Thats looking really good! :thumb: But as mentioned the texture feels slightly of balance in detail... the main culprit I think is the armor he's wearing, I like the clean look of it but the colors are very dull. It seems there are only beige tones... you could play around with adding some additional color tones to it, I think that might help in adding a bit more life to it like you have with the other parts of the texture. :)

Lots of good work! Hntrluc your halberd fighter is looking real nice. His armor and helmet however could perhaps use a bit more shine and more defined planes. The edge of the helmet especially seems to lack thickness and solidness. Still it's a great work!

"you should me more concretely"

what exactly are you trying to say?

The "the rest looks underworked" doesnt really help HntrLuc to improve his texture. Maybe you could have said that he should pull up the shadows abit more, or the highlights, maybe the noise, maybe add some dirtyness.

Saying "beeing underworked", "looks bad" , "i dont like this, fix that!" , "omg you should imrpove yourself" withouth leaving the information on what you dont like or think its underworked isnt very usefull.

I just tried to say that.

Blank Slate Joe - You might like to look into Space Monkey/Tim Appleby's sculpted Molerat man. It should be useful as a reference and is a stunning piece of work in its own right.
http://www.badpolygon.com/?page_id=17

Hntrluc - Thatdon touched upon a valid point. Your artwork is undeniably of a very high quality, but I think the excess of beige armour is letting it down a little. I'd suggest adding a trim in a contrasting colour the the different armour components to break it up a bit more. You could perhaps even work a little decoration throughout the design.

Its beautiful work, it just needs a little push to make it the best it can be.
The helmet particularly needs a little something to bring it up to the level of quality of the rest of the model.

HntrLuc :: Nice improvement there, though I quite liked the light beige armor, what you have now also works... though I suggest to lower the "whiteness" of the waist area... its very strong now compared to the darker armor. Also maybe add to the visor of the helmet at the top a lighter edge and a darker edge at the bottom... just to simulate a little thickness. :)

But yeah, this is definitely one of my favorite entries so far.

Jackablade
11-08-2007, 08:41 AM
Ah yeah, thats a big improvement. You do now have the problem of the sleeves and pants not standing out so well. I think the constrasting trims on the various armour plates would probably alieviate this. Something to better define the break between the breastplate and sleeves and the apron and pants would be good, and a matching one around the top of the visor to tie it all together.

Hunter, if you really want more crits..

I actually would have disagreed with the advice given you earlier if i had read it sooner. I do think it is an improvement in some respect.. some of my distaste for the changes is a style preference, I much prefer a brighter/cleaner style. So that is just a style preference on my part; though I think what is bothering me is that the contrast between cloth and armor is much stronger than with the face, so the eye is directed right to the belly. I preferred the composition of the previous phase (cream color) in that the face was the focal point given the lower amount of detail on the body. (I also preferred the color choice.)

Personally i think it's beautiful, and there's not much need to over-analyze it to death, but.. you did ask for more crits. :)

Sectaurs
11-08-2007, 12:48 PM
HntrLuc - i actually prefer the original coloring, i think it worked much better and kept to the light, playful air your character has. I think the biggest problem was that the armor was much more stylized than the rest of it, particularly the face, which has more detail than the rest, causing it to stand out. I think you could easily keep the color, should you want, if you added a bit more detail/trim, as jackablade has been suggesting. Not too much, business could kill the model, but it needs something more. The chest piece is just too big and too plain, it's draining the character.

blankslatejoe - i hate you for how good you've gotten at them low polies. texture is a good start. kick the contrast up a notch and throw down some red into his skin and you're golden, pony boy.

I think you could lose a lot of tris on the chin and feet, perhaps even make the arms 5 or 4 sided instead of 6. It looks more like a koala bear than a mouse sofar, I would suggest making the tail pointy and turning the ears a little outward. Other than that its looking good sofar! :D

JL - cool shape and design, it's already a strong character!
klash 120 - Armadillo is great, and it seems to be a very clean model!
Deto - The squirrel is awesome!

Karate Pig WIP, 600 triangles so far. I'm having some problems figuring out how to model his legs, because of the huge belly.
btw, Does anyone know if it is allowed to use different UVs on the two sides of a face? I would need it to texture the interior and exterior side of ears, which are made of flat faces. And eventually how to do it in maya? :)

-JL-
11-08-2007, 05:20 PM
MattiaNelli :: Thanks! :)

And about your question... There is (as far as I know) no way to have different UV's for the 2 sides of a face, since essentially a face only has 1 side, the way the normal is facing. So if you want to have a different UV/texture for the one side of the ear, you'll have to duplicate the mesh and flip the normals, which of course adds the polycount, you could get away with collapsing some points on the duplicate though since you can fake the indentation with texture.

Nice mesh so far, nice clean construction... though his arms fill a little short maybe?

Deto
11-08-2007, 05:21 PM
Thanks Mattianelli :)

You could model them like this, have the flat overlap the leg on the sides and somewhat on the bottom. I also drew out where you could optimize on the legs and arms without loosing actual detail or form, hope you don't mind :)

http://i15.tinypic.com/73oam4w.jpg

As for using double polygons... I don't know if its allowed. I'd rather go by optimizing and modelling the other side too, safer, and... well... almost as quick :) Or you could just have same tex for both sides and then just use random opacity planes to give the 'special detail' you want, like fur (heh)

MattiaNelli
11-08-2007, 05:55 PM
JL - Thank you! I think I'll add the triangles needed to have two side-ears. As for his arms you are right, they are too short even to slap :)... Need to fix the proportions a little.
I've made some search and it seems there's no way to have different-UVs-per-side polygons without doubling the triangles.
I was thinking about different UVs based on the condition that the face normal is facing the camera or not, like when you make a flipping page... but maybe it's too heavy for DS specs :)

Deto - Thank you for your suggestion, but I can't see your linked image!
The idea of using an alpha mapped plane to change inside and outside is interesting, I will try something!

Jackablade
11-08-2007, 08:07 PM
You've got an decent looking model there, Kemhri, but you could push the proportions so much further. Gorillas are enormously muscular creatures - massive long arms a and legs, big hands, powerful chest, bulky head. Your guy should be a really massive brawler. You can push the proportions way beyond what you'd normally see on a human character without breaking the design. Perhaps give him a stoop to accentuate the size of his back and shoulders too.
Gorillas also have quite a distinctive head shape which you really need to try and carry over.

kremrhi
11-08-2007, 08:28 PM
now that you say it, it's true that I could really more exaggerate the shape.
I will play a bit more with my mesh, thanks Jackablade.

holly bejesuz this things blowin up. great job everyone, so much cool stuff

allright, sorry to disappoint but i went with the mongoose. Gonna try and do the rooster as well, should be cake after i tackle this one. the mongoose was more challenging for me, carrying the pose over; man did i need a warm up bad;

heres a lesson to learn from my stupidity: in most cases when the model is symmetrical, unwrap before you collapse to save yourself some uv work :|:brick:

Inpw - thanx
tryforce - Cheborashka rocks
Hntrluc - that animation made me choke on my own vomit, great job. and good going refining the textures, you should really bring it out some more with spec details, imo :P
Vikkie - i like the rocker turtle. it inspired me for the heavy metal rooster
Hitto - you better not
damagecontroll - get to it
mattianelli - reminds me of "animal farm", lovely silhouettes <- both sketches and model

ok so i gotta pack the uvs into the box, and refine some of the vert weights... then on to painting! maybe add some fur if i have a few polies to burn, but i dont think i do, oh no boots but probably a belt, shoulda posted a wireframe for crits but its too late in the game now

MBT: The lion is very cute! :D I love it :D Coming greatly! Nothing else to crit than maybe giving his eyes little more color, they're a bit lost int he shadows now :)

Masterofthefork: Welcome! :D Its already very good, now just finishing touches and final highlights and its done :) The mesh looks good

Hello, I'll make it quick, I was introduced to Maya about a month ago, and a friend told me about this contest. So I whipped up something... It's my first, humanoid model (still in progress), but I'd like some feedback on it so far.

It will be a model of a Fiddler Crab in heavy armor. A shield will cover the large claw on its left side, and its right claw will fit into something so that it'll have a hand to properly grip things. If I learn how to "rig" it by some time next week, I'll have it in a very low stance similar to a normal crab. If i manage to grasp how to unravel the grid or whatever for texturing, its armor will appear roughed up and the hopefully shiny in chromed spots.

And HntrLuc, I'm so envious of your knowledge right now....

He's missing one hand, design feature? ;)

I see 4 polygons which don't seem to serve much purpose to me. Its the 'dark grey' triangles under the lower set of arms. I think it would do fine without them, and you could then use them to set some extra details elsewhere :) But its very good looking, nothing really to critique on :)

Ditch the texture filter for a start.

Its a good start. You've got some nice stuff going on on the head, but its very lacking in contrast and is pretty much all the one colour. Because of this it doesn't read particularly well and all just blends into a muddy mess. You may well need to clean up the noisy fur textures a bit to help the readability of the texture. As long as you keep this in mind, you should wind up with a very nice texture indeed.

Good luck with it.

I know, I've been lazy... sorry, Fallout took me over again :paper:

MBT : The eys are much better now, much more noticeable. Btw, the 'reflection' looks odd as the white spot is on the otherside, though I doubt there's anyway to change it, unless the eye are on seperate polyface, then you could just 'customfit' it with different texture piece.. But its okay, doubt that's going to be any problem anyhow. The textures are looking great, somewhat scottish lion, hehe, love it. Cute face, but deadly weapon :D Twohanded kitchen knife?

Ryuju: Sweet looking gazelle (?) killer! His form is pretty humanly... maybe you could make his arms look a bit more furry and even change the finger texture to make his hands seem a bit more animal like? Its pretty good as it is, but I think it would be even better if more beastly :)

QuickBe: Can you post different angles too? I have hard time seeing his form like this... :/ As for texture here on.. I dig the color, its calm and sneakish (Doubt its really a word though... You know, reddish, sneakish, that kind of wordplay). I'd say you change the pedestal to more swampy, right now he seems a bit lost.. Unless he's a skink from warhammer, the atzteeky (argh, another 'word') tribal lizardmen

Masterofthefork: That's very good looking, I like the changes on texture and the detail! Though, btw, I don't think you should have reflect map on him? Not sure if its that, but he seems reflective. We can only use diffuse, self-illumination and opacity on this one :)

BoBo_The_Seal: Nice looking bug, you've fit alot of form with little polycount, that's very good :D I have little crit on the design though... he's fat, and his legs are a bit too far back, looks like he's going to trip over anytime soon :) Or his butt is too small compared to his frontal areas

yakblat: That's not too shabby :) Your form is very tubish though, if you looked for some reference materials/images and tweaked the form/silhuet (not sure how to type the word though...) you'd get very fine model. I'd also suggest giving the armor more volume by pushing it more away from the body around it. Ie by doing it as simply as using push modifier. You can pretty easily do these changes after wards too, so no worries with it. You should concentrate some more on the chest piece, it looks pretty bland at the moment.. Large area with hardly any detail in

Zann: Good looking model you've got there! Nothing to critique on... yet! ;)

brickwallfish: lol! Nice colors and look on his face :D Don't know what weapon would fit well, but... bellybutton is must :D

MattiaNelli: Brilliant texture, I'm loving it :D Btw if you add black line to the border of the 'lowerbody texture' by the belt, you'll get rid of the seam, for most parts at least :) or if not... its worth testing anyhow

Typhus22: Nice wrestling croc :D There's a bit too much contrast for my eyes, but other than that the texture is very good :)

Kirilot: Good looking texture, but as Jackablade said, the texture is a bit blurry.. But I think it looks great otherwise, only the blurriness in legs and tail are slightly distracting. As for the 'look', I think he looks a bit too happy :D

Saker: You're getting there pretty nicely, but your forms aren't really connected, they more seem like connection of different kinds of small forms which form the look on the model. Which necessarily ain't a bad thing, but it requires different kind of approach on your model :)

Andrei: I also like the gold hat -> purple ... err... overrals more :) The contrast is very good in it. The texturing job is coming nicely, its very interesting

Inpw: That is a wolf gunslinger right? I dig the stance, there's good strong feel to it! The.. hmm... nose (face? something :D) seems to be a bit lower than it should be, I'd pull it up a bit to make his head seem more wolvish

but update on myself:

I'm not sure whenever the gun is a good thing or a bad thing (Ignore the texture on it, except for the gaps in the barrel, they belong there)... I sort of are thinking of big claws, some sort of fun weapon, like cornifer cone on a stick.. not sure at all... :(

hope this helps.

yakblat
the armor needs dirtying try using a multiply and screen layer (I'm assuming your using photoshop) and go in with a whiteish color for screen and blackish color for multiply and draw in some scratches and details senc the textures can only be 256 using photo overlays looses all the good tiny details drawing in the details works best

Inpw
cant wait for the texture

Ryuju
Really good job so far my only crit is the hands seem stumpy sence your goin with the human esque anatomy extending the fingers will make him look awsome.

master of the fork
looking real awsome dude love the final tesxture

typhus22

Digging the Mexican wrestler hippo, Andrei. I like the purple and yellow myself. It seems the most appropriately garish colour combination. Not sure about the neck area. He might look better if you shortened it.

Thanks for the comments, by the way it is only a diffuse. I guess the render + the gif compression makes it look like it has reflection on it.

Andre313: I like the amount of character in your hippo. I think the orange mask with the blue body looks the best. Where are his eyes though?

yakblat: It looks pretty good for a new modeller, maybe you should brighten the head a little to make the eyes more visible.

inpw: I like your idea, gunslinger wolf - very cool. I'm not sure the feet (boots) quit fit though. Perhaps give him pointy snake-skin boots?

Deto: I agree your screw needs a nose to finish it off. Also, I think your fur lines are too long, squirrels have short hair so should should have a lot of short lines for fur. Other than that, its a sweet manic squirrel :)

aktan: Do pet pigs and living in tree houses work? I look forward to seeing what you come up with though.

QuikBE: Your colours are coming together. You have the patterns down, but you need more shadows to define the form. It would be easy to add an overlay with shadows and highlights to finish the texture off.
