Hey fellas...my 360 red ringed about 20 minutes ago. Called customer support and they're gonna send me a box etc. I've had it for 11 months. I've been enjoying the orange box lately and was just gearing up for a big session of Half-Life 2 tonight. Oh, well...I guess for the next couple of weeks (at least) I can get some work done :)
It's the most insane time for a shooter fan like me right now too, dammit. Halo, Bioshock, Orange box, Call of Duty soon. Gears of War is still my most played game to date. I played the shit out of that little game. This must be some kind of conspiracy to get me to buy the pc version! haha
I was sorta hoping it would be Gears that would kill my xbox. Oh well...
How many of you guys have had the dreaded red ring of death?

I have, just got mine back about a month and a half ago. This new one is making some weird ass noises though, almost afraid that it's on the way out :\
Was playing Oblivion when mine died and had JUST been reinstated into the mage's guild after killing tons of their guys. Perhaps it was black magic that destroyed my 360. Let that be a lesson kids, stick to swords...those mages can be cruel.

I had it. Luckily I got the extended warranty so I could swap it for a brand new 360 at the store the very same day it happened, and keep playing. It sucks when it happens, though. It's "okay" if it pops during the summer, but now, of all times, with most of the goodies being released? No thank you..
Interesting fact: everyone I know with a 360 have had it break down on them in one way or another. That would be 7 out of 7 consoles..

Man that sucks, especially this time of the year! I'm praying that my 360 doesn't die on me any time soon. I bought one of the first run 360's and have yet to experience any problems, then again I only play my system on average 5 hours a week.:inocent:

Just buy a PS3 instead and your problem is fixxed :D
Hope mine don't break. I don't play much though, but Mass Effect might change it... :D

Sounds expensive, buying a PS3, hoping it will magically repair an Xbox 360. What should I do with the PS3 afterwards? Will just be yet another piece of electronics gathering dust on the shelf

Ok i wil explain in simple steps how you should use a PS3 to fix your 360.
Step 1: Throw away that useles piece of pie xbox 360
Step 2: Buy a PS3 ( if you dont have alot of cash buy the cheap one it is still better then the 360)
Step 3: Hook Up you PS3 ( and if neede write xbox 360 on it)
Now you can be sure it wil not break cause of bad hardware!
coupes.

That sucks... Honestly that's one of the main reasons why I haven't considered buying a 360 yet. Last week one of my friend's 360 kept crashing as we were gearing up for some NHL 08 action... While the Red Ring of Death didn't pop up, the console would crash every time we would load up a game.
You could always try the towel trick to inject some new life into it until you receive your replacement Xbox... ;)

I'd be careful with your generalizations...sony isnt exactly known for high quality console hardware...they've certainly had their share of red-ring equivalents.
sorry to hear about the red-ring woes guys. a coworker of mine was able to ship his back to MS and they replaced it for free, hopefully you guys can find a similar deal.

up here, in eastern europe, things are no different, i know 3 people with xboxes 360 here and two of them have already replaced them after a half a year or less [and the 3rd one doesn't play it :)].
good thing is that they usually redring during the warranty period.

Out of around 20 people I know that have 360s, only 2 have had a problem. The warrenty on them is really good too, like 3 years or something.
The PS3 is an ok system too, but when you look at what you can play on each one for me the 360 seems the way to go.
Either way, they fix it pretty fast so, its a minor problem but as you say, it gives time to remember things you should be working on if it happens to you ;)

i want a 360 but i don't think i would have time to play it. along with the fact that im a student that doesn't have that type of money haha. do u know if the RRD (red ring of death) is happening with any of the new ones?

I feel you Frozan,
I got this 360 sitting beautifully in the room, though there are no games to go along with it.. Everytime I have money, I don't have time, So I figure its not worth buying games/xLive. When I DO have Time (Praise the lord!) I don't have money..
Didn't experience the Red Ring Of Dooming Death though =/
Hopefully you can get it replaced withouth too much fee :x.

See, this is the problem with the PS3. There's no "Step 4: Play games".
I still fail to see how the above steps would fix a 360. I'd just end up with a box I can use to help cure cancer or watch blu-ray movies, with none of the games I want to play available to me :P

Just Wait, MGS4 will be awesome! :)
The anniversary pack for ps3 will have every Metal Gear game ever made! :O
MGS4 is definitely reason enough for me to buy a PS3 :) Good thing it got pushed back as I wouldn't be able to afford it this holiday season anyone, and I hate to listen to everyone rave about how awesome games are that I can't play :p

there is not need to think there are not enough cool games by now and most big block busters are multy platforme annyway now adays.

Could be a possibility, (no i have no inside info) just look at all the other games that have gone multi platform. Assassin's Creed, Devil May Cry, Grand Theft Auto (now coming out day one on both systems), Mercenaries 2. a lot of companies have had to rethink exclusivity. Games for the 360 and ps3 are very expensive to make, they have to recoup costs somehow.
back on topic.
it sucks that you red ringed. but you are not alone, while no official info is available, most think that 25%-35% of 360's has had this issue. That's why Microsoft keeps extending the warranty.
I hope you can get back to gaming soon.
or you know, pick up a Wii. They're damn near indestructible. You can throw the wii-mote and put a hole in your wall or TV, but just pop the batteries back in and the wii-mote still works...

Back to the Xbox 360 trip. I had one and it Broke then I was sad. So I returned and made a huge stink in the store.... I actually farted while the woman at the return desk helped me. HAHAHA. But I dont think the girl that helped me knew what she was doing cause I grabbed a halo edition xbox and she was cool with it. YAY.

monkeyboy and all those who are having problems with the 360 I hope you guys get them sorted out soon because I have been playing call of duty 4 since yesterday and I feel it's the best shooter I've ever played. Multilayer is insane and I've only finished the first mission or two in single player but that is just as good. Go rent it or buy it! And GL to you guys having issues with the 360s :)
I was thinking of getting a new graphics card for my pc but it would cost just as much as a xbox360! so I was thinking why not get a 360 instead but it seams that everyone knows at least one person with a broken 360, which is a horrible refection on the quality of the product.

WOW...so many posts! Thanks for the replies, fellas. I'm still waiting for them (customer support) to call me back - it's been 2 days now.
Anyway, looking forward to getting back into Gears when it comes to pc and I really want to mess around with the Unreal Editor, so maybe the timing wasn't so bad afterall.
