There are only a handfull of common 3D programs used on these here forums.
Lightwave, Maya, 3D Studio Max, Mudbox, Zbrush, Silo
are the ones that come to mind immediately.
As for textures, 9 of the 10 use photoshop.. the rest uses MS Paint :P.
I use
3D Studio Max and Photoshop and Mudbox.

How are silo and XSI? I'd like to mess around with those....
Can't vouch for XSI, but Silo's pretty good.
PRO:
- Brush/image-based sculpting tools
- Customizable GUI
- Interactive LCSM pelt mapper
- Pretty strong modeling tools
- Retopologizing brush tool
- Normal & Displacement Map export
CONS:
- Still some bugs in the v2.0 version because the core was totally re-written for v2. Expecting a major bug fix release soon enough.
- Poly limit dictated by total installed RAM (ie. 2GB RAM = 2mil polys). That limits sculpts to medium detail levels (as far as sculpts go)
- Documentation limited to a Wiki
RATING
B (B+/A- when Nevercenter irons out the bugs)
OVERALL:
Obviously, it's a modeler only. Feature for feature, it can't keep up with the likes of Modo. However, it's still only about 1/6th the price. For $159 you can't go wrong. The price:feature ratio is good. If Silo cost $900 like Modo then the rating would shoot down to a C, but for $159... Excellent bargain.
NOTE
I know that some people buy stuff and sell it off if they're unhappy with it or just need the money. I suggest you try out the Silo demo before making the decision to invest $159. Since Silo v2 is a download delivered app, protected only by a username/serial scheme, Silo v2 licenses are not transferable. The usual "caveat emptor" disclaimer applies. IOW, you buy it, you're stuck with it. Just a head's up.

I think Silo is a great tool for it's price, the retopology brush tool is very useful, the interface is highly customizable, the modeling tools arsenal is great.
But with the new Silo release, I can't import my .obj files :(

Works fine on my end. Could be a scale issue. It may actually be loaded, but too small or too large to see.

This one seriously kicks ZBrush 3's butt. I did some tests and with Silo 2 and I managed to do the same thing as in ZBrush, but in half the time. Don't think I could live without it.
However, it's still only about 1/6th the price. For $159 you can't go wrong
Agreed. I was lucky enough to get Silo 1.4 with a free Silo 2 upgrade for $109 back when it was still in beta. Best $109 I ever spent.

Yeah. I'm a cheapskate. I saw the "buy now & get the upgrade free" promo and lunged for it. Didn't regret it. $109 well spent. I originally hate Silo when I had to review v1.00. It was the most unstable pile of 1s & 0s ever. The program has come a long way since.
I do 95% of my modeling work in C4D since it's still faster and more robust. However, whenever I need to do quickie retopologizing, sculpting, or UV unwrapping... Silo. I used to have the habit of using Wings3D's AutoUV to pelt, but Silo's method is much quicker and prettier since its more interactive.

Thank you! I think that solves my problem :D nut a week ago or so looking around the Silo forums for a solution, I saw a few guys with worse problems with the .obj. I also read that they'll fix it with the next release.
I haven't used Silo's uvw tools, I'll have to look into it since I suck at uvw mapping, maybe Silo will be my saviour :D

Know exactly how you feel. If I listed every program I know (well enough to earn cash using) I'd be here all day typing. :) All of that CG app experience builds up over time, 18 years worth in my case. Even we ended up using is 2 or 3 programs daily, we'd all look mighty impressive on paper. Probably more than we deserve. :p
