Woot! Great contest, I had fun working on it ... hehe I notice all the judges said they didn't really like the face on my entry, whoops! :p

Congratulations to everyone who finished, there's a lot of great work to see there!

One thing about this contest though, something I think might be worth considering as a rule change for next contest... I noticed a lot of people doing final renders using things like VRay or Mental Ray and various high-end "photoreal" renderers with HDR and all sorts of fancy bounced lighting etc.

Since it's really about game art, I don't think it's fair that some people render in very advanced renderers. I see a lot of entries which were improved by a "high-end" render which seems a little unfair on people who don't have access to VRay or Mental Ray.

I liked the old rules on CGChat where you were only allowed up to 3 shadow-mapped lights, and no raytracing or global illumination.
It means the assets must be presented in such a way that they will look if they were put into a game. There are some entries here which I think wouldn't look so good

Just my opinion ;)

I look forward to the next one!

Thanks to Fred and the gang for setting up such a great challenge. The strong competition really forced me to push my skills harder, and I learned so much as a result. All the participants in both 2d and 3d did a fantastic job. I'm proud to be a member of this community :thumb:

GREAT WORK EVERYONE! I was floored by some of the entries here. Fantastic work

As for the lighting thing--personally I liked the basic 3-point light setup, but limiting the rig to JUST three lights is tricky--sometimes you really need that fourth or fifth light to highlight something or toss something back in shadow.

But I agree with prohibiting GI/radiosity/light-array solutions.

FredH
11-14-2007, 03:44 PM
Might just prohibit GI and post effects for the winning pose shot and leave the beauty shot as is.. basically, an anything goes type of thing.

Still thinking about it:think: There have been some great suggestions.

typhus22
11-14-2007, 04:13 PM
dude it be great to have a light setup done by one of u guys. im crap with setting up the lights and i think it would be a great thing to see how u guys are doing it. just my 2 cents

Parnell
11-14-2007, 11:12 PM
I'd prefer the 3 point light...I see your point Joe about the 4th and 5th, however in most cases a 3 point light should suffice. I guess what I'd really like to see are the entries posting a screen of just HOW they rendered the scene. I'm pretty crappy at lighting (i prefer to leave it to the game engine)...so any help seeing how those with awesome lighting skills do it would be a big bonus in my book. I mean we post our textures, wireframes, etc why not post a screen of where the lights are or something.

I like Fred's idea of posting a max/maya file for people to work from. Kinda standardizes things.

Fred and I have talked about this, and I have plans to create a small tutorial, and provide max/maya files with 3 point light setups with a variety of keyframes to try out position, color, etc. I just have to get around to it this weekend or next. :-)

I imagine that when 22 was chosen that nobody realised it was Thanksgiving and all the mods would be too filled with turkey to do anything  I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. I wish we had a parallel in Australia.
