So I'm starting to do this again regularly...do a sketch everyday...B/w or color. It's a great exercise and now that things have slowed down from crunchtime I feel like a steadier workout...Feel free to post any speeds as well. I love to see these things so post them on this thread as well. Maybe we can get a regular group to help each other out and just generally converse.
I'll also be posting these to my blog at www.artofhagan.blogspot.com if you just want to view them.
Cool...here is what I managed to eck out today at lunch...

Yep...I was hoping to get things stirred up a bit and get a group posting daily or every other day speed sketches...I guess I'm in a bit of a rut and want an artistic workout and like most workouts its easier in a group.
I'm also posting these on my blog daily (www.artofhagan.blogspot.com) but I was hoping that this would be more interactive and perhaps we can all get better together.
As for the sloth, cool. Thanks for jumping in the pool.

wow that one's really cool!
you inspired me to start up photoshop, and not nowing what to draw i looked around and saw a piece of cleaning cloth lying around, so i drew that :p
http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/7134/clothsketchzm4.jpg
after finishing i kinda liked it since you can see all sorts of shapes in it (some folds look like an arm, some like a head etc.)
hope you guys like it!
and btw: more people should draw stuff and post it here, otherwise poor brian will be left alone.. (and with an anoying guy posting a slammock and a piece of cloth :P)

Cool. Yeah, I've been doing alot of black and white studies lately with photoshop. Usually I start with a white page and add a layer at 50% pure black to rough in the big forms and then 2 layer, one black and one white. One is for harder shadows (at %80 or so) and then white for the highlights (usually at 80% as well). Basically build up the layers a bit like watercolor.

Finally got some time to do some painting. Feeling a bit rusty.
The creature was about an hour based on a previous sketch (http://www.ericelwell.com/upload/20071019_682_site10-19creatures3.jpg). Land scape was a little under 2 based on a previous sketch (http://www.ericelwell.com/upload/20071019_567_site10-19scape2.jpg). Not really happy with my landscape stuff...

I have absolutly no idea what technique you use to color your pics. They are just great. Somehow
everytime I start Photoshop something comic, anime w/e comes out. Then I take a look at other peopels stuff and see that their paintings look so real. ( for example ... the materials look like they are in real life ) :S
I guess i have to train some more years.
Anyways this is the lates thing I've colored. I hope that I slowly get into the right direction.
This was about n hour of work.
EricElwell
01-09-2008, 08:42 PM
Well, some of it is study (how does color change with shading or with bouncing light?) but really.. I don't have too much in the way of advice or process..
I generally start with color in normal blendmode, it always starts out butt-ugly and I just keep working colors in, tweaking values. In some special cases I do Overlay or Multiply layers, generally if I want to increase color contrast. I try to make color part of my composition. (gradiating or contrasting colors, etc. to lead the eye) .. I am not very good at comp, but I think this improves my use of color and color contrast.
For portraits, I might advise just doing photo ref, and remember to "paint what you see" and not what you think.. (ie: looking closer, "Huh? That's tinted green? no way...") Though I am not very good at portraits.
I really like your portrait. Personally I have a hard time working in grayscale, I am much more comfortable with color. You have a real quality there with your grayscale piece!
Only other thing I really think of is to check out these tutorials that helped me a lot:
http://www.worqx.com/color/
http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/main.php?id=ps55paint (http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/main.php?id=ps55paint)
http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm
One of the most impactful things in there for me lately was the "light bounces" .. and in addition, color bounces. This has helped my identify what color certain areas should be, shaded areas, where highlights and hit etc. ...
fun fun!
SpikeCB
01-10-2008, 03:55 PM
Thanks Eric I really appreciate your help.
Those links are great. After I read just a few of those tutorials I couldn't help it.
I had to try it out. Well the coloration of the helmet ( Mini CHallenge 9 ) was the first thing that came out of it.
For portraits, I might advise just doing photo ref, and remember to "paint what you see" and not what you think..
(ie: looking closer, "Huh? That's tinted green? no way...") Though I am not very good at portraits.
Thats one of my major problems at the moment. I draw almost everything out of my head.
But one of the things I gonna do this year ( just decided xD ) I want to practice drawing what I see.
Anyways I'm glad you like the portrait :)
Thanks

Here's a fairly quick sketch -- done without a reference and i normally blow at drawing realistic things from my head. You can tell i have no idea how to draw ears without a reference, lol. plus the proportions and perspective is a bit warped. Oh well, it's a sketch!
http://loreaxec.dot5hosting.com/img/sketch6.jpg
And this is one of my first sketches to eventually culminate in a loading screen for SCV Football; in anticipation of Starcraft 2's awesome map editor. I'm going to have to change the design a good amount, as i'm not too happy with a lot of areas of this sketch. It's likely to change a good deal on its way to finality.

Vialias, I see you have a lot of attention to detail, I think your pieces could stand out a lot more if you spent a bit more time blocking out the basic forms and poses like you can see Jido doing in his last peice. and be sure to keep us updated!
.. So this doesn't really count as a speed paint as it really isn't ANYTHING at all, more of a brush test. I decided to bang out some pattern brushes and a few "paint" feeling brushes. I actually ran into an interesting technique to block out forms and with a little tweaking it's good for toning too. A hard light technique I used to use, and gave up on, but with a few changes I might pick it up again.
If I come up with something worth while from the technique I'll try to do a write up or something.

bad jokes aside... as soon as I'm done learning and programming HLSL, my spare time will return to this thread. You can call this a thread for sketching if you want, but there is really well done and thought works in here.

-Mogster: Interesting shapes and designs on the demon heads! They would fit nice as a tattoo.
-SpikeCB: Good start, especially in not starting with a white background. But i would highly suggest you to work with bigger brushes and try to paint in a lot more simpler strokes. Would help you to clearify the important shapes and masses of a head.

Dario thanks, in the shy I've been inking them + rendering, there fun to work with.

But as long as it works everything is fine ^^
How about you? If I had to guess I would say you do. :)
Mogster
04-19-2008, 04:17 AM
was just wondering couse of the brush you are using, it is very strong and flat. couse if your using a tablet you can play with the brush settings so the brush fades off near the start and end of a stroke. otherwise i can send you some.
yea I r has a wacom intous cost me an arm and a leg.
SpikeCB
04-19-2008, 05:02 AM
Ouch! Thats a nice tablet :)
The bad thing about my wacom tablet is that, because its old I can just barely control the thickness of my strokes.
Well I got Photoshop 6.0 if you got some brushes for that version, would be nice if you could send 'em to me. But I will play around with the settings a bit. Never really tried that out. :S

he's jumping into a moving train! it's kind of hard to tell since the windows are so crisp... you might also want to increase the border on the right size, so you can show more of the train. (I assume that's what it is) ... the colors are nice, and the perspective on the crowd is working... it's just the main dude and the train that bug me.. but this is where the action is.. so it's somewhat important... what else have you been painting/drawing?
Daniel_C
06-21-2008, 05:30 AM
Thanks for the Crit yeah i had a bit of trouble getting the train and guy to sit right I rushed that bit a touch too much.
Not been doing much drawing to be honest. I only do these ones during lunch time for some speed paint practice. So far we've gone through a fair few of the Sijun 500 and have done some topics from the Illustration Friday site too.

i think the biggest thing i can see about your work is that your sharpness of areas needs some work. Just my opinion, the images look great but some are hard to make out. Try sharpening your focus on the main section of the image or your focus point. By doing this i think your work will improve a ton.
yeah, a focus point would really help imo, you might want to have a look at this: http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm#focus_points

Kalango
06-30-2008, 07:43 PM
nice ones dario, the opposite here, PS to Painter is quite dificult...since i'm used to one strange workflow in PS (like Carlos Cabrera workflow), tho PainterX is a realy realy cool soft....keep it up these look good.
Dario
07-01-2008, 02:19 AM
Thanks for the comments, guys. My impression is that photoshop is much faster in a way of laying down the big shapes and general ideas. But when it comes to seriously using textures and refine the whole image i would highly prefer painter, because of its way to work within the canvas, and not only inside the shapes of a brush like ps seems to do.
So my workflow in the future will integrate photoshop as sketching and speedpainting tool, because there you really notice the difference in time, and thats what counts in the end.
But... i understand the problems so many people have with learning painter, everything is kind of hidden somewhere in those windows, and you have to tweak the brushes to really be able to handle them the way you like and expect it. At this point i recommend you the "Introduction to Corel Painter" DVD from Ryan Church, published by Gnomon. It helped me a lot to see all the options in painter, customizing Brushes and so on.

I added a few details to Haya and then some other sketches ... still not that good with anatomy but getting better. (if i compare it to my body sketches 2 years ago) :)
By the way ... if you wonder why the guy always wears white stuff.
He is supposed to wear that.
His name is Justus and he is a very clean guy. Almost god like.

I really got to figure anatomy out >_> ... hope its gonna be
a lot easier with all the pictures on my wall.

I would say life drawing is the only way to get anatomy down. Lots and lots of life drawing.
