You guys should take a look at Topogun too if you haven't. 3D Coat actually has some features over Topogun, but they're saying the next version will have those. And it may be cheaper too, not sure.

Also, Topogun is really good for baking too.

I haven't tried the baking yet but I know 3d coat does it as well.

yah I got my hands on one the other day.
to be honest, I was quite surprised that I prefer 3d coat over topogun since 3dcoat is coded by one person I think. I'm not sure how the other tools work aside from retopology tool, but the retopo is AWEEESOME in there. Strongly recommend it for everyone who's looking to make your life easier when retopoing :thumb:

I'd definitely have to give 3dcoat the thumbs up too.

Topogun loses out to 3dcoat on a couple of fronts:

1) 3dcoat has a much more flexible licensing scheme. Just a serial #. Register it online... or don't. Whatever. As long as the app doesn't report back that you've got multiple instances running at the same time across different PC, you're good to go. No machineID bs. No online activation. Nothing complex. Old school easy.

2) 3dcoat does a lot more than just retopo. The extra dough is more than justified by these extra features.

3) 3dcoat gets updated a LOT more often than Topogun. I don't expect 3dcoat's (bi)weekly update pace to hold forever, but it's great while it lasts.

4) At least on my PC, 3dcoat is much more stable than Topogun. When it's not, I'm confident that the bug will get patched ASAP because the developer is always lurking on his forum.

Overall, 3dcoat is a fantastic buy. Even if you're a ZBrush diehard like me, 3dcoat can easily be used to supplement your workflow instead of replace it.

Yup. And good for hand painting normal maps too.

Did I just say painting normal maps?!?!

Yeah dude, the normal map painting is awesome! Being able to paint a normal map on your low poly.....is freaking awesome! It feels like you're sculpting high-res detail like in zbrush....but on your low poly.

Honestly I have not turned back since starting to use Topogun. Maybe that's because it was 1000 times easier to use(to me anyway) than 3Dcoat. I picked up almost every feature in less than a week by just messing around. I also love love love the baking tools. But, to each their own! We all have our favs!

4 real this topic comes back every month,

And if the retopo tools in 3dcoat took you more then 2 days to learn ...:paper:
The 5 min tutorial explains everything pretty well

Have fun

You can literally retopo an entire 25 piece model from Zbursh in 3DC under a day, and this includes the UV's if you know what you're doing.

I loved the 3d coat demo that i used. But I never bothered with the retopo. Looks like fun... The PAINTING is what sold me huge. its like a 2oo dollar body paint. Thanks Andrew Shpagin for your programming excellence. !

Hearing a lot of people give tons of kudos about this app. :) The thing I consider when trying out new apps is if many studios will be using them, (I have stuff like Headus UV, Topogun, etc.) but I wonder if the studios use these or whether they just prefer to just keep workflow in one program. Are more studios using 3D Coat nowadays? I've checked out some of it features and it does look pretty cool.

Well, I would love to keep everything in Zbrush if possible, but truth betold, the tools it currently has in the Reotopo section is pretty...sterile.
