Theme:
Ornate Armor!
Brief:
Hot on the heels of the monstrous minicomp that was Minimoo Fighters, we've got something a bit different in line for this comp. In fact, I can't recall any other forum ever doing anything quite like it. The goal: model a single piece of armor. That's it.
What? Just a single piece of armor? Yep, it could be a helm, a shield, a breastplate, heck, a pair of gauntlets if you wish. There's a catch though--the limits/specs are high for this minicomp, and the emphasis is on ORNATE detail. That means we're looking for intricate and/or lush details. These armor pieces should look ceremonial, beautiful, and expensive. [/B Or just ornate. Whatever that means to you.
NOTE: There's been some concern about the high limits: Normal mapping and high-res sculpts/bakes are encouraged, but not required. A single piece of armor should still be just evening or weekend's worth or work, despite the high limits.
NOTE 2: To give everyone a similar jumping point, I've uploaded a presentation mesh here. (http://www.30lives.com/gaorg/armor_base.obj) [B](Right Click>Save As) This is just a flat, untextured model that you can 'dress up' like a paper doll. It's not a requirement to use it, since I don't want to limit us to JUST males, but the more people who use it the better! This model was donated by Arshevelon and JoshSingh (I think Arsh made it, but Josh has tweaked it a bit). Thanks guys!
For concept art, we are looking for the same, but in 2d . As always, backgrounds are optional. Pedestals are optional. Texturing/coloring is optional. Basically... everything is optional. This challenge is here for those desiring to practice their art and receive friendly advice from fellow artisans. So as mentioned in mini comp #1-6, keep it easy, keep it quick, and keep it real. Good Luck!
Please do not make a new thread for your entry. Keep all w.i.p shots in this specific thread.
The Specs:
- 1600 triangles maximum
- 1x512 diffuse
- Optional bonus maps: ANY/ALL are permitted. Make something pretty.

that pic is hilarious! Ha ha You mentioned in the next comp thread that you were going to put up a grey model so were all on the same page is that still the case??

11-20-2007, 09:27 PM
can we have more then one entry?
blankslatejoe
11-20-2007, 09:37 PM
whoops! thanks damage, fixed now.
Quikbe - working on it now. I don't think we should require usage of it, since it's a male model (and I could see some people here having a lot of fun modeling chick breastyplates), but yeah, I'm uploading it now:)
burokun - well....yes and no..you can post as many entries here in the progress thread as you'd like, but only one can be submitted in the end. This is a limit of how the submission system currently works. So, you'd have to pick your favorite entry to be your 'final' to get voted on.

Do we need to use the Mesh, or can it just be the Armor piece?

you can just have the armor piece if youd like

11-21-2007, 12:07 AM
say we wanted to do gauntlets, only hypothetically of course ;)
obviously they could be the same and use the same maps for each glove, but what about the polycount would it be 1600 per glove if there the same, or 800 max per glove. obviously this is assuming the gloves would be the same i'm sure someone could make a set of 2 different gloves. this is assuming in the final setup i show both gloves because i think it would look nicer.

very interesting compo! Don't think i'll join this one, but it'll be interesting to see what happens!

This sounds like a cool idea. I look forward to seeing all the interesting designs people come up with! I want to join but don't think I can, school projects are picking up. We'll see though.
Interesting... think I'll give it a go... :)
And I'm interested also on what the answer would be for goffskullz's question.
And I know that figurine in the title image... Echidna is it not, from Queen's Blade? :p
One quickie question.. The base mesh, we can tweak it right? To change muscularity or fatness :)
TryForce
11-21-2007, 04:04 AM
are shields allowed? or only stuff wich can be attached to a body?
Animal armor too?
blankslatejoe
11-21-2007, 12:23 PM
obviously they could be the same and use the same maps for each glove, but what about the polycount would it be 1600 per glove if there the same, or 800 max per glove. .
Interesting question. If the gauntlets are absolutely IDENTICAL, then you can render one on each hand, each one up to 1600. You're basically just providing us with two renders of the same model in that case. So, no, in that case you would not need to drop the count to 800 per glove. If each glove is unique (a different model/look/variant) then COMBINED they cannot surpass the 1600 limit.
This solution gets a little tricky when it comes to someone who wants to model a whole suit of armor... but we'll address that problem if it comes up.
@darksun and Masterofthefork - cooomee on guys...you know you want to enter...!
JL - yup. It's also one of the first google results when you search for "Hot Chick Armor"
deto - you can tweak the mesh if you like. It was provided to give everyone a similar start point, that's all.
tryforce - shields are allowed. Animal armor is allowed too, just make it ornate :-)
ill be out of town for a few days starting this afternoon, so if there's any super pressing questions, message FredH. Otherwise I'll try and jump back on on friday or saturday. Happy tday everyone!

I'm doing an old nordic helm that was lost, and lay at the mercy of the elements for countless generations. It's appearance suggests that it once belonged to a noble and couragous king, his name forever lost to history.
...and now let's see if I can convey that in imagery.

Well, I'm glad the deadline isn't until the 9th of December. It leaves me time to spend time with the family and get those other 2 projects i gotta do done. But I'm debating weather i should do Valkyrie armor or a Samurai helmet and face mask for this one.

made a quick start, still gotta add some detail on the top of the helmet and make things thick etc. what do you guys think, should i also model the mask that comes with the helmet (with ropes etc.) or should i just leave it like this?

Hey Japhir, nice helm so far. I'd say if you could fit the face mask in do. I can't wait to see what you do with.
Anyways since Japhir's doing the samurai helm I'm gonna do the Valkyrie chest armor. Here's the concept for it.

Hi, I am making a simple shield with a bit Chinese and Japanese ornate.
The concept is not ready and I am not quite happy with the outer part of the shield.
The middle of the shield will have a Phoenix bird.
What do you think?
Plus my teacher (Ivars) asked me to participate.

How strict are we being on the "one piece of armour" thing? KamuiTenshi's piece would be at made up of least 4 seperate componants (surcoat, breastplate, spaulders). It'd be helpful to know whether thats allowable before we go into the design process.
Vailias
11-24-2007, 01:53 AM
I think it would be "one major piece as loaded in a game setting"
So a full torso, full arms or just gauntlets, thigh pads, greaves or boots.
I think the idea is that you have 1700 triangles to really push the detail of the low poly piece to fit the high poly, or do a slightly larger piece of armor.
Japhir
11-24-2007, 10:47 AM
i hope people won't drop out here because of the new challenge!
here is a small update, i tried improving my presentation skills too, just because i felt like doing that :P
http://img128.imageshack.us/img128/2641/samuraihelmetwipkn7.jpg
i tink i won't be able to model the mask too, since some stuff needs to be done with the shell modifier too etc... so either no mask or scraping some polys.. watcha think?
C&C most welcome!
YdoUwant2know
11-24-2007, 12:58 PM
Cut the poly in your cords, and lets see that mask. you might also condsider simplifying the ornate "horns" (for lack of better term) and using alpha mapping to get the detail there. it will give you a much smother edge with a lot less tri.
Ramseus
11-24-2007, 09:31 PM
Aside from the general lumpiness (thou shalt be smoothed in later days, ye foul lumps), I'm about ready to move onto the ornate part. The mohawk type thing looks horrid, I probably should've modelled that... whatever, it won't have any normal mappable detail on it anyways.
http://tyler.brenot.ca/wip/misc/nhwip01.jpg
I was working on some stuff for a shield pack, and this comp was a good excuse for me to push myself and add some sculpts into the designs.
I'll call it done, but feel free to crit as I'll keep it in mind for future works :)

Ah, a high subd level, and masking before applying the deformation so it comes out even.

Hey everyone, I'm back! Great work going on in here; I'll get to work on an entry during lunch!
ivars - thats one crazy design--I like the animal influence! It might be cool to see some highfrequency detail in a few places though--the concept looks like it'll just be the metalforms undecorated.
issie - i like it...but I actually prefer the perimeter of your first design over the second one. thats just a matter of taste though--both look cool.
davidhalo- yours will lend itself well to multiple material types..that fabric mixed with the silver will look nice.
chai - great so far--its very 'gray' though, and could use some color variation. For instance, some weathering along the sides, or in the grooves might help the design pop more. Or, some weathering along the back, where the clasp joins the metal might help sell it as finished. All the designs are looking good though! Nice zbrush work :)
mbt - my favorite so far--that will look awesome once you build it!
tonyedwards --dog armor...now that's original!
kamuia- its nice to see someone going the torso route..I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out!
ramseus - thats a lot of work! Some of the details still feel a bit soft--but getting something rigid out of mudbox is dang near impossible. Perhaps at the end you could make a pinching pass to help differentiate the corroded areas from the, well, noncorroded areas. Anyway, looks good!
japhir - i like it a lot--the mask will lend itself to some nice texturework

If someone really likes these feel free to use the sketches as reference....i kind of did inadvertently in my design. great stuff everybody!
i worked some more on the lowpoly, and managed to remove lots of not-so-important-verts so i added some more detail and now i still have 50 tris left... don't really know what to do with those.
oh, and i removed the "eyebrow" part of the mask, since after looking through some references without the helmet itself i saw that the real masks don't have the eyebrows either.

I forgot about adding on the chainmail until after I finished unwrapping and all, darn. Oh well, I would have to sacrifice too much UV space for it anyways. Low poly came out just under 1400 tris (smoooothness), I'll see if I can squeeze out some more detail. WIP on the texturing, realtime viewport rendering. I'll fix the 1 px UV's on the edges before I'm done.

JUst spend as much time as u can on the specular maps. Thats all i can say tbh
chai...are you sure you're logged in with the 'remember me' option ticked..sometimes that can thwart submissions...

Heya,
Does anyone know if/how i can make the shoulder bits have the 2 color effect?
Hey Chris! Nice to see you here!
Nice idea for a armor you've got. You could try using a colored specular map with a bright yellow specular and a high eccentricity value, to give you a nice wide specular.
Ramseus: Great work!

There's some inspiring pieces in here.
Here's an update. Done modeling the highpoly version, and will start with the lowpoly soon.
There will be lots of ornaments and small detail as soon as I get to texturing. I've been gathering references for the type of patterns I'm going to use.

Nice high-poly, I can't wait to see what you do for the ornamentation.

Way to have two pieces of armor there, Vied. :p
Hi, finished with the design now, I kinda like it but not sure about the tail feathers. I will start modeling next week.
I have to move this weekend so...
A lot of it will be hard to notice on initial glimpse (think of diffuse and resolution constraints), but you shouldn't worry about that as it looks cool as a whole - love the patterns :)
What program/technique did you use to achieve this radial symmetry ?
Did you make it one part at a time, then mirrored to check how it looks or was it in realtime ?
I have a lot of work envolving patterns and such, and could really use better methods, thanks :)

I'm having a hard time deciding on how to do with the inside of my mesh.....
Should I assume the helmet will always be attached to a head, and therefore, no need to model an inside, or should it be a piece of it's own, with both sides modeled..... hmmmm.
I'm running out of polys fast, if I am to model both sides.

My english is not so good so you have to have a oversight for it, I will try to explain as good as I can.
I used Illustator as my main program, and gather lots of refersers to make the patters.
I made 2 "symbols" of same type and place one of them under the first one so it would be in a straight line.
After that I made the 2 symbols a group so it would be easier to copy both without choosing one at the time.
Then I copy the group and rotated them to 90 degress. so it would be like a cross.
After that just copy the group and rotate them so It builds a round ring.
I just have to pray that you will understand that.
It takes 5 years for a person to understand me.
Otherwise ask Ivars , He knows me.

Cool work everyone! That viking helmet looks kick ass! Nice corpse too :P
Issie: It only took me 2 years
I feel that I made things harder for myself by doing a design that opens up... It forced me to model a lot of the inside as well, but after some optimizing it's now exactly at 1600 tris, and it has enough geometry to be animated :thumb:

Thanks for the illustrated explanation, your english is fine.
It looks like a lot of tedious work to rotate those manually, you need quite some foresight to design those.
I did some playing around today while working on my 3rd shield batch (http://www.svartberg.com/wip/gothic_battle_shield_04.jpg) and managed to get a nice way to mirror in photoshop - basically record an action which contains duplicating the layer, and rotating it as many times as you need - that way you can mirror by pressing one button :)
I know illustrator transform is kinda weird, which might explain why you had to copy the symbol down to rotate it, I don't know if you can apply my method to illustrator as I haven't gotten my head around it's crazy transformation :)
blankslatejoe: Great the submission works fine for me now :)

It is way easier in photoshop but I wanted to make the sheild design in Illustator because of Vector graphics instead of Pixel graphics (PS). So I can transform the patterns without losing to much information on the form whether I scale them big or small.
So it would look nice in the big picture.
I just proberly missed the PS function in Illustator just because I was dumb not to notice it.

Ramseus --> Lol:lol: It's nice to finish early I see hehe I am not sure what you are going to hand in as a final, however, careful, your helmet is being lost in your latest image because the undead have the same color tones. Still, really cool image:D

Here's a little update. Far from done. I've baked the normalmaps from the highpoly, and they turned out ok. I've been working on some ornaments as a displacementmap, and this is just a quick test of that.

FredH - That was being lit by a big warm light source, so that could add to everything having the same general hue. I think I need to sharpen the mip-maps though, the automatically generated ones have no sharpness at all.

ivars -- hmm, the ornaments, while very cool, do seem to fight with the animal look of the mask. I dont know what the solution would be though--I had the same problem on mine too and dropped the ornament down to just simple shapes. It still looks certainly kickbutt though--I love how the hinge works.
here's my contribution so far. I'm struggling with high poly sculpting, but learning. I'm still pretty new to zbrush, though I'm getting the hang of it better and better every day.
I'm not sure what it is--some kind of orc/ogre helmet---looking at it now, it looks way too much like a 'face' and not like a helmet. Might have to reexamine some things I think..

Seeing some great stuff in here.
Confracto: I think it'll look a little nicer on a shoulder piece that is all one piece instead of multiple sections. Mainly because I think the skeletons would hinder the advantage of having multiple sections and consisting of a single piece will give the skeletons a more solid base to sit upon (being carved out of?)
Ramseus: Great looking helm. That last image kinda reminds me of oblivion.
Ivars: Great design! I kinda wonder if the space between the eyes are a bit too wide, but that's being nik picky. Still, I can't wait to see the finish piece.
BlankSlateJoe: When I initally saw it, the first thing that came into mind, besides ork, was those deep sea diver metal helms. Probably because of the bulky sternum piece. Shaping up to be pretty interesting, chin is kinda flat though.
Kilrot: Looking nice! That little area that looks like a drop of rain with a smiley face looks kinda out of place. Perhaps add an emblem or something. The pointy chin is a bit plain. The dark like kinda makes the bottom section look like a weak point.
Japhir: Instead of using pure black and white, how about some light and dark chromatic grays. Right now, I think the black and with are kinda overpowering.

thanks yoyomon. i don't really understand what you mean by black... there are only dark blues which i colorpicked from my reference images. the helmet part was pretty hard to do, 'couse actually it is very shiny (no idea how to make that with plain diffuse, maybe with the specular?)
well anyways, i did some crazybumping and lots of retoutching it photoshop. still lost of cleaning up to do, but i really need to get used to working on a per-channel based way. ok no more talking:

nooooooooooo I thought the max was 1700 tris! Arrrgh, I thought I was done but now I have to cut out 100 tris :brick:
edit: Easier done than said, my flaps weren't optimized at all and were eating up oodles of excess triangles. Realtime and whatnot.
http://tyler.brenot.ca/wip/misc/nhfinal.jpg
Vied, that's some snazzy work there.
vied: ahh, that's so awesome man !
The normals seem a bit flat though (as if the armor isn't made of different pieces) - though it does make it look more like fantasy drawn art - so I guess it's just a different look ...

Ramseus: That helmet turned out great! Good thing it was easy to optimize.

I've submitted my final now, but it's hard to squeeze everything in to only one image.

Hey guys, just wanted to say that due to the other project I had to do taking so long, i will regrettably have to drop out of this comp. But that doesn't mean I'll quit working on the armor, in fact I planned on using it at part of a larger piece. So I'll be posting WIPs of that after these finals are done.
