I would say E, with the ears of C. and the face of B.

I agree with Buro eccept I think a nose of sorts would ad that "nentendo" look maybe even a small bump would look good or a smaller virsion of what you have.

Apart from the colors I'm good with this one. Round ears, smaller nose, height somewhere between the two original thumbs.

Obviously I'm in dire need of assistance from someone who is good buddies with a color wheel.
Not just "Howdy Mr. Wheel."
I'm talkin' pints after work with C.W. trying to keep him from hitting on fat chicks kind of buddies.

Thanks!

{the more I look at it the more it reminds me of Kurt Russell. . .}

Kurt Russel... don't know about that... but cool concept none the less. :)

And the colors kinda work for me. :paper:

i like ur final sketch.. cool.

colors are great man! great choice. id say that you should draw i bit more attention to the eyes. just cuz hi face and eyes are so big. i look at the face immediately but notice that theres more detail in his head tail rather then there EVERY RECOGNIZED ..EYE..

weapon? tool? ornaments? i think any would ad to the silhouette!

Jackablade

The colours do clash a bit. Green on red is usualy a pretty harsh contrast (someone once told me that its the hardest on the human eye which is why they used the red and green stripes on Freddy Krueger's shirt. I don't know whether theres any truth to that, but it does seem plausible). Thats not necessarily to say you shouldn't use red and green, but its something to consider. Just doing a bunch of variants like you did with the silhouettes is probably the easiest way to find something that works nicely.

In the mean time, you really need to give this guy some pupils. His empty sockets and vacant expression are pretty creepy.

Me likes. He really looks like a adventure character where you could give him any weapon and any Cloth/Armor :D Thumbs up!

Really nice final concept!

I do agree the colors look a touch off, i included an image just playing around with them a bit. Not to say "do this or ur face is lose!" I just mean, just some small tweaks and he reads a little better. for how awesome the face is and big the eyes are, dont insult with such a poopy brown. I like the "red on green" but reduced the color of the leather a bit. Does it work? you decide.

and the concept is very cool, cant wait to see more.

I forget who posted this initially, but its a handy little tool for working out colour schemes that work well. Play around with the settings until you find something that suits the character.

You really need to do something about those scary eyes. They're all I see when I look at the design.

Thanks for all the help guys. I've been trying to do something with the eyes that doesn't make him look like a bug and isn't big sappy anime eyes but I've got some way to go on that front. I'll finalize the colors when I texture.

@Jackablade: Thanks a ton for that link. VERY helpful for someone like me.

Here's what I've got so far:

1811

1812

1813

I've got a good amount of tris left to fix any problems or add doodads.
Most likely going to figure out some sort of non-lethal weapon before finishing the actual model. My a.d.d. won't allow me to do it all at once. . .
Thanks in advance for more input!

Nice man, the only thing I can think of right of the top of my head is that you should do away with the bridge part of the nose. Match the concept

Euphronios
12-06-2007, 12:53 AM
I don't really know any way to make a nose without having that sort of topology in place. I've already got the big eyes and face shape of an anime character so anything I can do to keep it from falling further that way is important.

How's this?

i really like it has a lot of character!! i like the one with the bridge of the nose better though, otherwise it seems unnatural.

Jackablade

Hey, that turned out nicely. His face is a little passive at this stage, but I imagine you can fix that once its rigged.

No shaders in use; Diffuse+Spec:

Boring Flat (very much not done):

I was extremely lazy with the unwrap and just took advantage of LSCM. That's why the layout and usage are so sloppy.
Due to poor original design I can't really see where I can get some good detail into the diffuse map.
Overall I'm pretty disappointed but I'll finish everything up and submit it. Every little bit of experience and practice helps though so at least it hasn't been a waste of time.

The eyes with pupils of any size are FAR creepier than the glossy bug eyes. meh. . .

TryForce

uhm , you shouldnt bother yourself on , how can i add details, go more into shading and to seting out more harder edges probably.
Your texture sheet looks pretty blury to me, as for example the eyes had completly different color in the concept then you have got now.

i could give you suggestions to create an texture wich is rarly used. I see alot potential in this project. Try to be original and give the texture something unordinary. Wether it be realistc, semi real, cartoon, or extra ordinary.
Contrast is the key in Nintendo.

I was extremely lazy with the unwrap and just took advantage of LSCM. That's why the layout and usage are so sloppy.

Dumb question maybe: why is using LCSM bad? I've found it to be way faster than unwrapping with projections.

Euphronios
12-25-2007, 02:49 AM
@TryForce: That's exactly the problem: creativity; to say nothing of originality. Obviously I've got a lot of practice to go before I start painting good looking textures but I've always been lacking in creative juice stock.
Thanks for the tips though; I have no intention of quitting.

@rootdown: Nothing at all wrong with LSCM. Though, when your objective is to try to get as much texture space as possible from your map you can't just call it good at "unwrap." Most packers/unwrappers that I know of simply can't do the job as well as you can by hand. You are right, though, it's extremely fast and does eighty percent of the work for you as far as real time work goes.

TryForce
12-25-2007, 04:43 AM
Well i dont think its hard to think off now something good for texturing.
I would suggest you to follow about 98% the Concept you got, Let it be a diffuse map. Hard egdes, true colors, and hard shading. It would come very cool, if you dont have any other ideas left.

Kalango

nice :D, the texture could use a little bit more contrast and color variations in the skin like red and oranges, keep this up man.

FredH
12-25-2007, 06:09 PM
Yeah, there is a bit of wasted space on the texture sheet, but it's not the end of the world. Maybe these two things can help:
- Red'en up (or use another color) his elbow joints, cheeks, nose, ears and throat a bit. This might liven him up a bit.
- Give him some upper boot flaps or something. The harsh transition between his boots and green legs are much to harsh. If he had a top piece like his gloves do, this can help

Otherwise, it's a great start with his textures. Looking forward to your next update.

Euphronios

I've still got plenty of polys left over if the map still isn't helping the transition from shoe to leg. Hopefully I haven't over worked the texture.

looking really cool! one thing: how can he have such a strong backlight when he's standing against a wall? :p (back of the head is pure white)

Euphronios
12-28-2007, 04:34 PM
The alien has his own lighting setup so that he'll stand out in the scene no matter what. The first three renders show the rim light messed up; the thumbs up render shows the light properly.

You need to get that specular map working better for you. Could you post what you're using? I'm guessing you're using a black and white spec map. A coloured one should yield a much nicer result.

Its looking great, you just need a little more work to make it look the best it can.

Euphronios
12-28-2007, 08:49 PM
No not black and white but it is my first go at a specularity map. I realized once you mentioned it that there are quite a few parts on it that I'd forgotten to include.
I'd love to know how I could fix it. (or scrap it and start over if I have to)

The winning pose is lacking serious oomph. Any ideas?
Just noticed that awful seam.

Jackablade

Getting some expression on his face would help a lot. Given he doesn't have any teeth I don't suppose a big grin is really feasible, but make it look like he means it when he gives that thumbs up. Likewise, see if you can emphasize that pose a bit. Have him throw his shoulder forward and whatnot.
