Here are some initial sketches...brewing some ideas...definitely first pass though...

oh snap... I love your style man! I'm partial to the design in the bottom left, The guy on the right is kinda generic. Mummy is fun, but I'm really liking the little minotaur.

Not sure about having hooves for hands.. not as expressive. Does give it a certain feel though.

Like I said in the daily sketch thread, it has nice Disney vibe to it.

I don't think that they're so much generic as they are "unexpressed." Each character really deserves a full sheet just so we can see their respective emotional ranges and typical poses.

Every character looks generic when they're standing there doing nothing. Remember, concept is only half of the battle. Personality goes a long way. Half of Disney's designs are boring, but what the animators do with them is just astounding. Imagine Disney characters like Dumbo, Baloo, Tarzan, or even Simba. Static, they look boring as hell. Given expression and pose... totally different story.

I think that any one of these designs could work depending on what you do with them. As far as Wii-oriented design goes, I'd probably soften them up a bit for the more family friendly console, but that's just me.

Thanks guys...yeah, a little vanilla perhaps...its a first pass. Just wanted to get some ideas on paper quickly. As for the hands, yeah I had the same thought. It all needs a little something more...maybe some color soon as well. A really fun comp.

So the idea behind this game is perhaps not original in the mechanics but leans a bit more on the presentation to smooth that out. Basically in a nutshell think God of War meets Donkey Kong, Jr.

The borrowing from mythology...although from a few different cultures not just one for the look of the levels and characters. The bones of the story is the son of the Minotaur, Milo, has his father captured and taken away across the see and he must travel to free him. Simple and straightforward. I'll have more details but thats the bones of it.

I'm thinking of doing some quick level sketches just to give a sense of the world of the characters and thus flesh them out a bit as well...a backdrop and context. Anyway there it is.

Interesting initial concepts, they're well drawn. I'm getting the feeling that you plan on building up a few characters for the final image to create a sense of world rather than a single character. This is something everyone entering should take into consideration. Good luck!

Oh come one, give us newbies some chance and hold back some punches :P Now you discouraged me more from joining the concept side. Your drawing and idea seems solid! But what is the mummy guy and the one on the right for?

Really excellent work! The latest image is a bit too final fantasy but it looks great regardless.
The Throne room looks superb, I can't wait to see more!

I'm diggin the color sketch of the throne room... This is going to be cool once it gets reigned in... I'm not to into the samurai feel of the rabbit's costume... but the milo character's little tufts of hair make that guy all the more awesome! I'd rather see the characters get the same color feel that you did with the environment... Great work though!

Excellent stuff, A very wholesome character that nintendo would be proud of! The Colouring looks great. Do you plan any accesories?

Really cool stuff. I would also say that there are plenty of evil kings and armored enemies to mine from the Mediterranean myth. The Japanese stuff seems almost like a tangent, story wise, though I have to say that the bird thing looks very nice.

I really like the colors on the test render. The warm cool contrast really helps (wish I could remember to do things like that). Noticed that on the rendered version the belly seems a lot more prominent. That's not a problem from this angle but might look a little dumpy in profile when he's standing upright.
All quibbles really. Don't really feel I'm in the position to crit some of you guys.

any accessories for this guy? Also is there any rule that says you can't color my characters for me? haha... Your color job is NICE! The only small crit... the shiny fingernails are a little over the top! But it's still good though...

To bad Brian, I shared the same reason to have thrown in the towel for this comp, the holidays sabotaged it.

Hope to see you join dominance war III!
