So here's what I came up with over the weekend. Originally it was supposed to be a boss character for a rpg-style game. Not sure if this is ok with the rules but I guess I'll do it anyway.
His/her (not sure yet) weapon is a deadly Fishstick..stick.^^

muhahaha xD great! hhaha, awesome!

xD i love the expression and the primitive stick, haha, Awesome!

I love the color scheme, are you going to do a few more iterations?:)

waahh
11-26-2007, 01:55 PM
Thanks for the comments guys. I'll do some more iterations but probably no colored ones. Just a different pose and some small changes I want to make.
Or did you mean iterations of the colors?

Well I meant more concept attempts, different outfits, etc. It's cool if your locked on this design though, I find it very appealing.:)

I really like this character, I look forward to seeing more.

So I ended up with another colored one after all.
@Marcus: I did some quick sketches before choosing this one. I just drew the
cap and thought "looks like a worm is eating the head.. ok lets make it a fish..
this should be fun."

WOW .... this is pretty cool &&.. i loved this one ^^

Nifty. Should make for a great character.

Wasn't there a version of Bubble Bobble where the characters were people dressed as dinosaurs? Lets see...

...Ah here we go. Bubble Bobble Evolution for the PSP

Never mind. Your design is better.

Good concept, really liking the two-color theme you're going for. It's much better than the stuff from BBE, hope you can capture that quirkiness in the model.

Funny thing, for awhile there i was thinking the stick with the top bit was actually a marshmallow (spelling?) on a stick lol

FredH
11-28-2007, 04:20 PM
Waah's is better then bubble bubble. However, unlimited polies and textures.. and he makes a fish stick  Oh well, weapons are optional anyways hehe

Nice Start waah. Having his arms come out of the mouth works really well.

waahh
11-29-2007, 12:29 AM
Dang so much for originality. Well I didn't expect that no one ever came up with something similar. Boo from Monsters Inc. also has a similar costume.

Regarding the weapon I'm thinking of replacing it with something else. No idea what I'll replace it with, only that it will be close combat and far too big. The fishstick was supposed to be used like a sledgehammer btw. not like a magic staff, just in case you were wondering.

I started modelling, mainly to check if the hair chunks and the region between the armpit and the fishmout would work in 3d. Here's the wip.

fishstick for a weapon - now thats funny and smart! he also could use spatula for an axe! :) or say - fishnet!

TheMagnetic

no worries about similarities man! just think about makin your guy UNIQUE!

ryuju
11-29-2007, 01:50 PM
wow the modeling is already looking great, it has tons of character.

waahh
11-30-2007, 09:37 AM
Here's my current progress. Almost finished with modeling. It's 4973 tris without the eyes which are just placeholders.

hmm. Not really liking this at all it's too damn good and cute. Keep it up! :)

very cool! i would make the fish eyes seperate buttons like in your concept instead of just one big button.

Marcus Dublin
11-30-2007, 10:02 AM
I was wondering how you would handle the proportions in 3d and I have to say so far you nailed it, the mesh flow is solid and the form is top notch. Keep up the awesome work man; you’re off to an amazing start!:thumb:

Nice. You know you've got over a month to get this thing done, right?

This is one of my favorite designs so far.

:D

This character would definately fit somewhere in the Mario world.

fast indeed, this is pretty awesome. I love the style, reminds me of SNES rpg characters, but awesomely translated to 3D.

waahh
12-04-2007, 08:58 AM
Update. I'm working fast because in the last 3 comps I joined, I always got lazy at some point and as a result didn't finish.

Antimagic
12-04-2007, 02:51 PM
Looking good! the water color look was a good way to go on this one. Not sure how stylized you are going to go on this one, but some seams along the side of his pants could look good.

Japhir
12-04-2007, 03:39 PM
i didn't notice the gills 'till now! love it! i love the waterpainty color! why does the ambient occlusion have those black spots on the "horns/hairs/fins" though?

Jackablade
12-04-2007, 05:28 PM
Model is looking lovely and your colour choice seems pretty strong, but I think your actual texture isn't doing the rest of the model justice. The gritty light map is making everything appear look likes its made out of the same material and muddies things up quite a bit. You really need to keep this guy clean and sharp. I'd suggest ditching the light map all together and painting in nice, sharp shading by hand. It will likely make for a much better result.

Determinedto3D
12-04-2007, 09:45 PM
Yeah I gotta agree with Jackablade on this one. The model and design are really strong but the direction the texture is going right now leaves something to be desired. If you are going to bake lighting info like that, I would beg you to brign it into photoshop and clean it up.

Mtg_kirin
12-04-2007, 10:14 PM
I like the colors and everything but on the bottom jaw should there be teeth in the back? does seem to make sense.

Sectaurs
12-05-2007, 01:43 AM
listen to jackablade.

right now everything looks crafted out of the same muppet-like material. homogenizes all the shapes and makes it ho-hummmm

waahh
12-05-2007, 06:37 AM
Thanks for the feedback. Here's a small update. I upped the saturation for some parts, made a cleaner lightmap and activated the lighting so it would display the specmap.

@Antimagic: I'll try some seams and see how it looks. I'll also add some patches.

@Japhir: Because some hairs/fins share the same UV space. The black part is the part where one of them intersected with the cap.

@Jackablade: I didn't really want to go for a cell shaded look but I'll give it a try.

Filbot
12-05-2007, 10:44 AM
I really like the gills on the side of the suit, that is a nice touch. The texture is looking better now that you cleaned up the lightmap a bit and got the spec map working. Keep it up.

I really like the design of you character. Its a cool idea.. Interested to see the finished character.

TaeKwonDao
12-05-2007, 10:15 PM
While I like some of the other entries, they don't really seem to fit in the category (imho). Yours on the other hand SCREAMS Nintendo, which I thought was the whole point of this contest :s

Anyway, love the character. I'm definitely looking for this one to win.

waahh
12-09-2007, 03:20 PM
Here's my newest texture wip. I tried to make it more like Jackablade suggested. So far all my attempts on painting proper shading by hand failed...
At least it's clean now though kinda plain.

@TaeKwonDao: Thank you very much!:D

Mtg_kirin
12-09-2007, 04:57 PM
that really helped. Still dont understand the teeth in the back though

yoyomon
12-10-2007, 12:09 AM
Looking good Waahh. I think the cleaness adds to it. A lot of characters like Mario, Wario, pikachu generally have a clean and smooth look to them.

Supernova87
12-12-2007, 06:05 AM
I was pretty gobsmacked when i saw this. This is probably my fave concept design out of the lot because it does just scream NINTENDO!

The colours work well with one another, and the clean and smooth look is absolutely fantastic.

Great concept! Definite potential so I'm gunning for this one to win so far!

Good luck.

Marcus Dublin
12-14-2007, 02:45 AM
Wow, you’ve been blazing right along waahh! The textures are looking much better than before and I’d skip the whole cellshaded thing, it doesn’t seem fitting for the character. Anyway what are your plans for the pedestal and background?:)

waahh
12-15-2007, 10:17 PM
Got the rigging&skinning done. I'll post some different poses and the Stick tomorrow.

@Mtg_kirin: Thanks. There are teeth in the back because it's a floating upper jaw type of fish. Like Ike in Southpark or that Harlequin monster in Nightmare before Christmas. I hope this is understandable it's 5 AM here and I don't know how else I should explain it.

@yoyomon: Thnx. Thats true tough their lastest versions are a bit more detailed.

@Robot_monkey: Thanks a lot.

@Marcus: Glad you like it. Not sure about the background yet. A Torpedo used as surfboard might be involved.

12-17-2007, 08:10 PM
Ah, gawsh! That character is awesome!

Jackablade
12-18-2007, 01:28 AM
I'd suggest making his eyebrows curved as you had in the original concept. They gave him a friendlier look which suited the character better than the vaguely angry appearance of the straight eyebrows. You don't have a lot to work with with such a simple face, so every little thing helps.

YdoUwant2know
12-18-2007, 10:49 AM
Wow... I love the character design.

The textures look almost too clean. It could use just a bit more so that is does not look like a solid flat color from the front. maybe a faint scale look or just lighten up the belly a bit more. Hammer textures could use some work as well.

otherwise great work, I'll be watching this one for sure.

12-18-2007, 03:03 PM
you've really captured a good feeling towards this model if that makes sense. Great design! Just come over to the 3D section for a look and never seen this till now. Keep it going man, can't wait to see more!

Kalango
12-18-2007, 03:48 PM
Hah :) looking very nice man, i would say on "mountain top" level for this fella :) and an evil aura hehe.

typhus22
12-19-2007, 07:33 PM
do not give him pupils! part of why i like this character so much is cuz the eyes match the overall feel of him. i think this is so far my favorite entry and i love that little dynamic wind blowing shot. just very very cool man!

Jackablade
12-19-2007, 11:25 PM
Something I notice that irks me a little is the face that theres no transition between the between the red hair and the hood of the fish suit. It just kind of clips through, or looks like it does. If you added a subtle hem line around each one it would help to sell it that little bit better.
