this is the old design i was going with. im gonna do some reworking though to make the rig a bit easier. thin and longer legs should help for exaggeration.

for a weapon i plan to give him a gun. cant figure out if i want a hand gun or a bazooka-like gun. any suggestions?

nuthin but luv! thanks guys. glad you like it. still debating if im gonna normal map with such low texture guide lines. its worth the challenge though.

fenixy: m21 sounds nice! i was thinking something more over the shoulder with big blasts of explosions. but if i dont settle on what i concepted ill definitely go with that brute! thanks!

Cleaned up the later concept and threw the armor on. probably gonna ink and color him sometime before the comp is over.

heres my ideas for guns. ill either do the grenade/bazooka thingie with the musket or ill do the spear with the musket. if im cool enough. ill do all 3. MAYBE.

the idea behind the spear design is that its a "hunter's harpoon". you hurl or plunge it into a massive beast. and if the beast takes off running. the chain on the wieght will catch on foliage, causing more pain and damage, thus slowing down the prey!

looks great, i love the last weapon... maybe the weight could have spring loaded hooks the come out to grab on to roots and brush cus right now it looks like it might slide through all the brush with no problem. Looking great lets see some more progress!

great concept.

he's a fun little guy, but I think his face is lacking character. not as engaging or expressive as I believe a main character needs to be. I'd love to see some different expressions on his blank face.

can't wait to see him in the 3D, regardless

wow, awesome style, I love the character! I think that his bare shoulder should stay without a tattoo, to balance with the other clothed and armored arm. at this stage, I'd say you have plenty of time to experiment with the possibility of a normal map, as well.

Dennis-I dont think im gonna do the bird thing. cuz ya.. mark of the kri.. he IS a hunter. so id be cool if he had a dog or something but thats not fitting in a 512 map. maybe on my own time.

GrM- Ya thats good call. gonna roll with that. not to mention he ll have a weapon of some sort on the bare armed hand. normal maps gonna happen too. just gotta man up and do the shit.

started the model yesterday. of the late and even now im developing new techniques and approaches to modeling characters. im ever invested in speed and efficiency!

hes thinner than i would like but when im done with the base mesh ill widen him out.

it might flow a little better if the splinching happened at the top of where his thigh transitions into his pelvis as well as at his belt line. Just a thought.

so im planning some skin tone variations to ad more vibrancy and contrast. a friend pointed out that his skintone is to close in comparison to the armor. which, most likely, in game this would be true. so..

also my animal friend is going to be a great hunting companion! i want to do a snow leopard with a lynx like ears. most likely ill elongate the tail even more. i dont plan to concept this guy. maybe if i add some armor or something..

got the body done. hes sittin kinda heavy (for me) at around 3300. i could go in and do some cutting. depends on what the cat comes out to be. if i need it for her then so be it. after this gonna spend a lil bit longer on the 2D. color weapons. design armor for the cat. maybe a bit of concepting for her as well.

Always been a fan of your style. This is looking pretty solid. As far as skin tones go, the far right one looks good. Considering spec map and all, the darker skin tone will probably work out better regardless.

looken nice man. I say the middle one for the skin tone. The blue tattoo looks nice. the head of the model looks a bit off from the concept, but that might just look like that because you don't have the ears yet. Keep it up.

honestly tho, after seeing the amazingly done concept, I think your model's proportions are coming up short. he's got the same general shape, but where it looks stylized on your concept, it just looks a bit wonky on your model. places like the foot, the knee and the sides of the top of the head. I really think you should spend some more time on this, and fine tune him a bit more.

The name doesn't sit well with me, though. Strongleg Ironhand? For some reason Stronghand Ironleg sounds better to me as it seems to fit his attributes better.

im so happy that everyone loves this guy! im definitely gonna do some minor tweaks to pushthe geo a lil closer to the actual drawing but I will also be relying on my normalmap and textures to line up more with the concept.

also the cat is out of the picture. I wanna normal map so I need the space!

I wasnt planning on telling history on this guy but his name was given by the higher warriors of his clan due to his inability to run for prolonged periods of time. and his lack of apathy when it came to killing pray. in all he was looked on as weak and eventually banished as a teen, forced to fend for himself. as he grew older he aquired weapons to assist in his hunting which accomodate his flaws.

The model looks great. But there's something about the head that looks odd to me. Maybe it a bit too square? Not sure. I know his design has a squar-ish shape but the model's head looks even more square than that. maybe...

ya voodoo. i felt the same way. thats why i didnt go with the original look.

did some minor treaks throughout. i know that we were given 5000 but i felt like that was too much...so im budgeting myself to 3500... im pretty happy with the results. so im gonna move on and get to unwrapping then decide if im gonna do the weapons or normal map him.

While this is an interesting design I don't see anything "Nintendo" about it. At first glance it appears to be a chibi verson of Kratos from GoW which as far as I'm concerned is not a title you would ever see on any Nintendo platform. Take a look at all the ICONIC characters Nintendo has created and come up with something cute and alluring that a typical Nintendo fan might be attracted to.

The quality of work here is excellent but I feel that you have missed the true objective of this competition.

Create a simple, original and stylized wii character that is both catchy and charming…As long as your character is not realistic

It doesnt say they have to be cute and alluring at all. In terms of the art style, I see much more influence from Zelda than God of War. Look at all the characters in Twilight Princess; there is definitely no realism, but they can still be bleak, scary, heroic, or dangerous. That game also has its share of violence, and so does the Metroid Prime series; in their own way. A bazooka and a spear may sound crazy and possibly gory, but it wouldn't have to be.

I think its a very strong character that would be awesome to see in a game.

While it would be cool to see in game I just don't agree that this character is simple or original, but it definitely is stylized. However I don't see it fitting this description in the brief when looking at the Wii and it's current lineup of iconic classics.

Is there anything about this character that stands out enough to really be called "the next big hit" on the wii? It's just a muscular dude with tattoos and armor no matter how you look at it. Like you said it looks like it would be a support character in a game like the Zelda series, not the main character who's going to move a million units.

Once again he's a well drawn and modeled character, but if it were my $50 on the counter and I was basing my purchase on character design alone I would pass.

thanks for the advice kicker. you have valid points for game design in general. my go is to not be the originator, as in the pioneer of wii, but to be unique in my execution.

I am MAJORLY influenced by alot of styles. and it certainly shows. my main source of enthusiasm is mark of the kri. a very cartoony game! and final fantasy as well as secret of mana (gameplay wise)

i intend to create a character that is cool. what better way to do so than use what other people like. not everyone wants to play mario or zelda. though those are some cornerstones of nintendo. this is just a maori-ish hunter with cool weapons. my job is to make him look good. :)

I feel he matches the brief and that he d fit well into the game design he is intended for. and that is a game that ID like to play.
all in all. this reiterates to me that I could push myself further. and not fester in this type of character. I definitely could do a cute guy or girl. but I want quirky. already the wii has seen a spectrum of styles. maybe one day itll see mine! :)

Its rare to be original! but hard to be unique!

Maybe just for fun, after you're finished with the rest of your entry, you could just do a sketch of the two of them together so we could see how they would have looked? :inocent:

While he may not be the most stunningly original character we've seen in this competition, Ironhand is as iconic as anything that Nintendo has ever created.
I do think his face could have been developed a little more. As Sectaurs mentioned earlier, its not all that expressive and without the luxury of being able to push character through animation, you really do need to concentrate on such things. That certainly doesn't disqualify the character from competing in any way though.

Actually I think he could pass for a young Oro from Streetfighter 3, before he lost his arm and about 100 pounds of muscle.

Love the illustration style used for this.

the Bazooka is out. after designing it, i came to the conclusion that it didnt feel it fit in this guys world. below you see the musket and spear. and how they size up with Strongleg.

finished the unwrap. hes ready to rig and go to zbrush. heres what the unwrap looks like if any ones interested. i must admit this looks a little wonky. i did NOT want there to be a seam on his chest/ shoulder area. so i took measures to make it so.. there are alot of ideas being tossed around in here..so crits welcome. the pack job is nice at least!!

I think he's safe. A lot of video games today have characters that blinks with the iris moving to all corners of the eye; seperate eyeball mesh. But I am interested to see how it's going to be pulled off without them being behind eyelids.

Try-im workin on it!! ill post a WIP of the normal map in a couple of days. ya the eyes should be fine tho they arent of the same mesh it wont be a problem. i dont intend on having him blink. if i do, id just animate the uvs and make room on my texture for that purpose. but the rigging for movement will be quite effortless.

First of all, looking great to better as always, G.. And second, don't listen to these people saying your stuff looks like this and that. What's the point of them pointing things out? Give you less credit? You may have similarities and design traits but really it doesn't matter. Your stuff looks great either way and being able to do that is a talent. So good job, buddy, and keep up the great work. Can't wait to see this guy all textured up. Oh, and love that pistol.

Thanks Chu- whats funny is that alot of the art styles that are being pointed out have me like "huh?" REALLY this STYLE of art is MAJORLY influenced by comic artists(Cheeks. and alot of the other LeadHeavy crew. Chris Bachelo) . as you know i developed this style for getting into comics.

and the Icredibles. to see something that belongs in 2D translate so seemlessly into 3D and game art was a huge breath of hope. so thats MY major goal. Thanks for speaking out. i dont mind if people come and comment on what looks like what. as long is this concept is true to MY style, as long as the model is true to the concept, as long as my mesh is clean enough to please the rigger, as long as the it is attractive to the eye. i have done my job. :)

not just that but..hearing this keeps hope alive that i can maintain my style and keep a career in the industry. with this over saturation of reality in video games..i began to feel that i was becoming pigeon holed. and that id loose work. but its good that not EVERY developer is disillusioned with the fatuous goal of bringing reality into a place that is meant for escape!

I dont care what my stuff looks LIKE as long as it looks GOOD and isnt similar to fecal mud! ;)

haha BuroKun. i should give him an AK47?!!? the musket is .. big enough to be held with 2 hands but can be held with 1. the bazooka is out and i think the spear may be too long for that.. does..look kinda cool though.

This is a great concept. I could easily see this guy staring in his own game... I think Nintendo is all about innovation and functionality... Lets not forget people that Mario was created damn near 30 years ago... His whole new design caters to that original 16 pixel sprite...lol... You've got some great options for wii control with this character... Keep it up yo!

started the NM. painting it all by hand on photoshop to get a more plastic doll like feel. im not as happy with it as i thought, but im gonna role with it. just because it doesnt have spec or diffuse to go with it. i got a few more tweaks on the NM and im gonna start the diffuse.

that rocks! reall love the sharpness in it! maybe add some small detail in his chest, since his legs have all sorts of small wrinkles, but the skin doesn't, which makes it look plastic. (even though that was your target :p)
you might want to define the biceps a bit more too.
could you tell me how you go about paining your normal map? you just paint the blue channel correctly, then the green one and then the blue?
well anyways I really love this character and i wish you good luck with it!

I know your already probably ahead of me on this one once you rig but the expresion right now looks slightly frieghtened or just uncomfortable where as im sure your taking this guys the fierce route.

The main difference appears to be the lopsided mouth position on the concept, so presumably that'll be a matter of the facial rig.

Style is on point... Who knows what would go big ever... I would have like to see a little more definition in the pec/deltoid area like the design... maybe done in the normal map? However, once this guy is posed, and beauty rendered! It's gonna be a looker!

havent had too much time to work on this. even with holiday leave and what not. spent a majority of time getting him rigged only to come across problems and crashes. FINALLY i got something up and running. heres a wip turn around. gonna go ahead and make his pedastool now. work on a couple other poses for him while i hear feedback on textures.

I think you could put some tonal variety into the skin and still maintain the style you've established, while giving texture a bit of a pop. Even if its just some reds and purples in the shadowed areas

The straps on the right arm guard needs a better normal map and or just some extra geo to help sell them, Other than that this is ACE!

but IMO the textures are a bit too simple, they look like color blockins. maybe you could post 100% self-illuminated pics so that we can see the actual diffuse detail?

he looks tight man.:thumb: hard to give any critique.
couple things maybe consider - color variation for more contast.
below the back of his neck seen a little flat. looks a little
plain with that big muscle he's got. but that may not be the issue
for you, because the style of your character.

ya its an animated gif. but the actual process was quite grueling, as my video card wasnt strong when it came to running the turnaround animation. (i just key'd the rig..real simple stuff) then i took screen caps of every frame and took those jpegs into image ready.

if you dont know how to make your own gif. this is the process.
1.Save files to a specific folder (preferably jpegs, for me).
-in image ready-
2.File>import>folder as frames
3.Save optimized as..select gif format.

all should be good there.

thanks for the texture crits! after i build the mini environment for him, im gonna go back and do some tone variation ill make his skin lighter as well to help push from the color of his clothing. but really his main purpuse for in-game activity would be to stick out from lush, jungle greenery.

im going for a vinyl feel with this guy. i want a nice simplistic look which is why im cutting back on muscle def. i want a more bulky look and if hes gonna have defined muscles the groups are very simplistic.

Looks real awesome, man. Love the pose. Not sure about the armor design on it. Seems it can fall off soon. Are you going to lay a specular map to it, to make it more "soft"? Even if it's a vinyl look. Great stuff as usual, man. Talk to you laters.

Overall coolness... I agree with some of the slight color change opinions already stated.. one thing that bothers me a little is in the trapezius area, there is alot of flat space there, I would suggest adding the small diamond that you see around the 7th cervical to break up that space... Good work though... The pants look great... I think the pose could still use some work though... it's not quite warrior yet... it's little feminine...

I like what you did with the chest in the sculpt.
his shoulder and arm guards really need some color variation in them tho, I can barely see the differences in light and dark you've put in them.
as well, I'm not sure if you want to go for this with your style, but they also look rather UN-grounded to his arm, he needs more shadow on the underside of them, and on his arm, you could also do to adjust the specular map to reflect this, and help bring out highlights and shadows in the armor pieces.

Loving this so far. One thing I'd like to mention, is that right now, even though it's just flood fill textures, it's super readable, ditto on the normal map. However once you start texturing, you have a tendency to let your texture get so noisy and contrasty that any and all previously created volume disappears. I really like this piece and hope that you might keep that crit in mind when creating your final diffuse, and try to keep the volumes easily readable.

Good work on the style and modeling. I'm really digging your whole anatomy styling. No critic from me with that, it's ace. The thing I would work on a bit is the coloring. There's a lack of tonal variation on his skin. I would also play a bit with some more extreme warms and cools on his costume, not too much, just touches here and there to break up to the monotony of all the neutrals.

YES i am going to finish. i probably wont get to ALL of the crits left by people but thanks alot! no time left and all.. but i will do what i can to make the character pop in the final pose!

Poop. Ya man you are exactly right. i recognized that after last dom war..i pretty much ruined the character. with this guy i wanted to do pretty much all flat colors and focus on shape and silhouette. nothing fancy. just READABLE when shrunk down. so you wont be seein all that noisey stuff, or in the future either.

BUT fellas....i ALREADY submitted it.... :( thanks alot. it is VERY different than my DW11 character i dont see how it looks like him. maybe its the hair? i have no idea. but this guy is clean and cartoony. a rushed and preliminary execution of how i think my 2D style would look if it had 3 dimensions.
