I started off drawing a musketeer typed character. Somewhere along the line that changed to the pimp character shown in the top corner of the concepts.

I kinda liked the idea of a character in a zoot suit, so I moved to this:

I wasn't really sure what to do with him after that. I experimented with a mouse head, which looks ok, although it is straying pretty close to the weasels from Roger Rabbit.

I haven't yet drawn the turkey version, but should hopefully have it up by the end of the day unless someone comes to make me do some real work. From there, there'll be much work to do on proportions, stylisation and the rest.

Alright, turkeys then.

Working out what to do with the dangley thing on top of the beak:

Head stuck haphazardly on body. Theres potential but I'm a long way off yet

I did a quick hunt around the net for references of cartoon turkey characters to work out how to achieve a posture thats both human and avian. I came across some ancient cartoon on Youtube called "Tom Turkey and is Harmonica Humdingers". Did a very quick study of the character with a few tweaks towards my own design.

More to come.

Update. Pretty happy with where this is going. What's everyone else think?

I'll have a crack at a front view shortly.

I like this last update, its got something about it. I think you are ready to move to colors.

Jackablade

not quite matching front view version.

And a very quick treatment of the face.

I might do a bit more work on the face before I move onto colours and stuff. I'll see how I go.

Lagging a bit, but I got stuck into doing the 3d model this afternoon. I think I should be able to pull this off pretty easily with 2500 polys, so I might see about doing a second character if I have time.

Not sure about the scale of the hat brim. I'll experiment a bit with it once I've gotten further along with the rest of the model.

The side view looks slightly off balance, but u could probably tweak it during modelling.

Haven't done anything on this guy for a while, due to various commitments inside and outside work. My Christmas holidays start tomorrow so I should be able to get it all together quickly after that.

Finally got some time to work on my entry.

I hate the hands. I'm not sure exactly what I'm going to do with them but what I was going for there just isn't working after around 20 slightly different iterations. Not sure how the tail is going to go either. I need to do a quick test texture to see if it works ok.

looking good! maybe the hands would look better if you made the middle- and ring fingers longer and the index finger shorter, so that it looks more like a hand in stead of feathers (which is cool too).
keep it up!

Working out a colour scheme. I spent a while researching Capcom characters in Udon's art book. Working out a strong colour scheme is pretty tricky.

I think this works reasonably well with the simple palette and repeated motifs. I might put a trim on the jacket. I'll see how it looks once I've got it on the actual model.

I can't think of anything useful to say. . .
I'm a big fan of the zoot suit and you're right on with the color scheme, in my eyes. May want to try adding a strong pattern as well.
as an idea:

Yeah, not a bad idea. I think the vertical stripes might work well.

could you make the fingers a feather like shape?

Jackablade
12-31-2007, 10:34 PM
I tried that. It didn't work very well. Warner Brothers and Disney both used hands like those for thier bird characters, so at least I'm in good company.

Nearly sorted the texture. Tail and chain to finish off, alpha to paint and a little touching up here and there. Pretty simple, but I think it works.

I really need to work out which of my monitors is calibrated properly. It looks a bit washed out on one of them.

Good texturing on this so far. Looks like a fun character.

Goddamn, you'd think after 8 shipped titles, I'd be used to this kind of stress. Nevertheless, with a mere 2 hours remaining I've got this sucker in the bag.

Excellent work. Lots of personality on this one. Certainly a character I'd look for on store shelves.

I was going more for Cab Calloway than Sam Spade, but whatever works. Thanks for the comments, guys.
