Here are some more designs. I picked a fairly ambiguous Old English name just in case the design changes.

Let the great experiment begin! (Arrested Development reference)

REALLY?! 5? I was thinking 1 or 4, but I think 3 could be better than 5. I'm not a big fan of 2 or 5. Although, I do like the boney knees on 5. Hmm... I'll consider it.

camel for the win.

number five.

5! Camel all the way. The elephant is also pretty awesome. The raccoon typed creature (3) is ok, but we've seen his type of character many, many times before, if fact several times just in the Mini-Moo competition.

3 4 and 5
The square on the weapon of 3 might be drawing my eye to me and that might be why it is the first to catch my eye havent seen to many camel humanoids on either mini moo or the hybrid theory over on cg chat i think it lends the most to creativity

hmm, call me crazy, but I see all these 5 as being related characters to a hero character, but not a hero in and of themselves.
Like either a cast of bosses/major enemies, or helping party members.

Reminds me of a robin hood theme. Perhaps sketch another animal, and toss them a pair of weapons, or a bit more gear to make them more.. singularly heroic looking.

i see what you re sayin Vailias but also these are thumbs.

a rework would be advised more detail and vibrancy added to the character to help attract the player. give him a reason to become attached.

more ornaments or the likes to ad to the character regal attitude.

I completely agree! I'm going to use this as a base and maybe add some ornaments. Concept some stuff to make him unique... other than the fact that he's a big ass bi-pedal buffalo with a heavy weapon to smash things with.

Meh...

heh well cool.

I've been thinking it over, and it isn't ornamentation or detail etc, it is the proportions of each character. None of them are "balanced" all are specialized.
Now you don't HAVE to have balance in your character if you have something specific in mind for gameplay.

See the bison and Elephant both look slow yet powerful. They have the huge upper body with little legs. They have the same general makeup as disney's little john
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e28/vailias/robinhoodandlittlejohnwalkingthroug.jpg
(the brown version of baloo on the right)

They read as heavy support.

The sloth magician has his mass in his extremities, and so looks more frail (like most stereotypical magic users tend to).
The camel's lanky legs but average torso suggests agility or stealth (toss on a hood and you've got a camel assassin)
The raccoon/badger thing just screams monk.

All these are good, and have merit, but my advice toward a more balanced character proportion comes from the existing hero type characters from existing games in the nintendo lineup, and or the cartooned adventure genre.

From ratchet, to sonic, to mario, to link(windwaker), to Banjo-Kazooie(2 entity single character), to even diddy kong, they all have a fairly even leg to arm ratio, and many have more david like proportions, with enlarged feet and hands (and head) to give them greater impact with body language and gesture.
Heck, look at Rayman. He's JUST hands, feet and a head with a suggestion of a torso in the middle.

Again, what you have in mind overall may differ from the usual platformy adventure presentation, but its definitely going to need a bit of a boost in the hero department. ;)

As far as this bison goes he really feels barbarian to me. The furry feet do it really well. They look like fur boots. :D I think he could do well with a thick belt ala Conan and perhaps a pauldron on the dominant hammer arm.

They remind me of the Team Fortress 2 crew. They mesh well together and look like they could hold their own in a fight as a team, which is awesome. But none of them really take that step out of the group and says "I'm the leader" or "I'm the strongest"
Maybe some extra ornamentation or a special item to any one of those guys would help push them to fill that role the contest is looking for.

I go with 5. Sneeky, intelligent, agile creature that will be funny when animated, very original concept..... my 2 cents

I totally agree. I think that's an issue with a lot of Nintendo character designs. Most of their personal character is defined in how they are different from one another. Ironically, I bet a number of Nintendo characters wouldn't even win this contest if they were entered.

If you're going with the buffalo, how about some anti-magic amulets or some sort of trinkets? Personally he doesn't look like the type of bi-pedal buffalo warrior that would wear skulls and what not.
