The basic idea is that this kid is sent on a mission by the gods and has various adventures along the way. Loosely based on Chinese / buddist mythology.
I might give him a companion depending on how many poly's i can squeeze out of the character model. The way I'm going to texture, i think, will lend itself to a more low-poly stylized look, so i may be able to give him a sidekick or pet or something. Maybe a bird.

How about one of the animal companions from "Journey to the West" - a monkey or a pig. A fish might be a bit more complicated.

yeah, I thought about that, but at that point it would start to actually resemble the story, and I'm not really sure if that's allowed, since those aren't my own characters. Are mythological characters allowed?
I've already been working up a hawk companion for him, anyway :P

5000 could easily produce 2 kids with a weapon. i think you should do a fat friend. whose belly button is showing!
this a great thumb man. i like this idea alot!

I altered the concept a bit, I'll post the new one tomorrow. Roughly the same idea.

i know that this is just wip. but you have as much geo in his nose as is in the lower half of his body. I KNOW ITS JUST WIP! but i would keep in mind trying to keep your polys as uniform as possible.
also i would stick as closely to the form of your original design. it holds so much character. the model looks a bit flat compared to it.

IT'S JUST A WIP!! No, you make a good point, it IS flat. I'll try to address that today. Here's the new concept. It's roughly the same, but the mood and some bits of the character have changed.

I was looking at the original doodle and instead of seeing eyes i saw a huge grin and no eyes. So that's where i decided to go with the model.

Added hands, rounded out the torso a bit. Gonna wait till i apply the mirror before i start massing with the legs and add more clothing detail. Gonna finish the mouth and then I should be able to start detailing.

Did a bit more detailing, Added the mouth interior / teeth and gave him a weapon.
Sitting at 3200 tri's so far. I;m going to add the hair after i combine the two halves and I'm going to give him a sack. I figure if i can leave at least 600-700 tri's for the bird he should be good to go.

/Edit - yes, the nose is going to get optimized :P For some reason the wires aren't all showing. There are loops at the wrists and various edges here and there that aren't showing in the captures for whatever reason.
