I am thinking of doing one of my majors for my art practical class in Zbrush. I only have the trial version. The artwork could be chosen to be shown in a museum. I was wondering if it is fine to use the trial version of zbrush for a piece that will go to a museum or would I need to buy the full version.

Also, is it ok to use zbrush trial for competitions such as dominance war? And If I did buy Zbrush, would I be able to keep the license forever? Or is it just for a year like maya and max?
If the license last forever, would it be free to use the license in future versions of zbrush or would I need to pay more for the update?

You should be ok using a trial or a student version if you don't sell the work. But you'd be better off emailing them direct explaining your a student and what might happen.. they can give you an answer or maybe point you to the student licence if there is one.

As for buying a copy, you can get a yearly subscription, or buy a copy outright. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. I would these days go for a subscription, As I can afford the cheaper yearly costs, and like the updates and new versions early. But if your going to be a student for a while a one off copy might be best despite it costing more to begin with.

When I go to the Pixologic site and go to the store page, I only see two types of licenses, Single User License and Volume License, and both are outright buys. I can't seem to see a yearly subscription or student version of it. Is it on a separate link? or is it some kind of special deal?

easiest and best thing to do is to mail them directly, as LowRez said. They know best, obviously, so they should be able to provide a good answer.

Just for student work at school i think its ok to use a trial version, just wondering if the 30(?) day typical trial time is long enough for big projects. For display in a museum, though, there might be some legal issues. Again, best to check with pixologic themselves, email them.

Well I am only in year 12 high school and not college/uni so 30 days is practically all we get to do 1 major (we have to make 2 in 1 term) and the artwork that will go to the museum is just an exhibition for exit art showcasing year 12 artworks in Australia.

I will email pixologic like you guys suggested though. I'm just curious about the student license and the yearly subscription.

Thus far, every update (point releases and major releases) Pixologic has made to ZBrush has been given away for free to anyone who already owns a license. So if you bought ZBrush 1.0 way back in the day, you would have been able to update all the way through 3.5r3 at no additional cost. That's pretty awesome if you ask me. That being said, there's now way for me to say how much longer they will continue to do that. And Pixologic does continue raising the cost of the software with each new version. I believe it cost $300 when it first came out :)

Good luck.

Good question. I bought it outright a couple of years back too. No subscription thing back then either. Wouldn't make sense with Pixo anyway. Their releases are too erratic & staggered to justify an annual sub.

this is a good question. If you email them, be sure to post the answer on here ;)
