Here's my inital sketches. The idea was for a cutesy character who was crippled as a child and somehow befriended and teamed up and fought alongside a robot. The cutesy character would sit atop the robots head with a huge gun and just fire about the place. I want to go for something visually interesting that has the potential for a great silhouette.

I done these images a few days ago thinking about the Wii-Challenege and over the weekend I moved onto fleshing out, the cutsey character is called Grabbit. I'm happy with his face in flat shade, the proportions and spacing of features but I will toy around more with the costume and gun. The Robot is BolTron, I have roughed out his proportions and general feel but would like to nail down more tech bits.

Haha grabbit is cute and wicked.
And BolTron, he's got kinda a western cowboy look to him.
I don't know if that was intended but when I first saw him I was thinking OHH good bad and ugly.
creativce names too.
Yikes I still need to come up with a name for mine.

Rayartz - I've worked more into the BolTron concept and decided to go away from the cowboy feel. I never imagined this in the first place So instead I've tried out a more bulkey design. I personally prefer this and like BolTrons solid flat head where Grabbit sits upon. I'm imagining that Grabbit has some sort of magnetised pants to keep him stuck to BolTron during battle... Hope the magnet pants don't mess with BolTrons brainwaves! :)

Kalango/kipiripi - Thanks guys I am determined to finish this off.

Who run bordertown?!? The last image reminds me of master blaster from Mad Max...love that.

Nice start!

I like the first BolTron design more. It looks like they have more of a mutual symbiosis relationship: bunny needs bot to move around and the bot needs the bunny for defense. The second BolTron looks like the bunny is a parasite, latching himself onto this huge, burly (and in my opinion, boring) looking thing that could probably take care of itself. The first iteration also has a great vertical composition.

Absolutely love the first design! Everything about it... both characters are brilliant!
Not keen on the second pic... or concept...! The size difference of the 2 characters in the first painting is better I think. Makes a much better silhouette.
And I dont like the chunchier BolTron as much!

Kalango

Hah very nice :) Keep this up man looking very cool :)

I agree about the first design, its the strongest of the 2! and has the most character. Scrap the second design and go for the first.

Spacey/Ste/EVIL - Ok after all the negative feedback to bulky BolTron i've tried to go back to the thinner verson where I want to avoid the cowboy look. I don't want the first impression to be "Hey it's a quirky future Western Robot"

- I threw in an average man to give off the scale.

- My plan is also to have BolTrons head detach into a sort of hover chair when needed. More sketched to come on this.

Thanks for all the feedback, keep it coming it's all good.

The new BOTRON is by far better than the bulky one... I'm definitely going to keep an eye on this one...

Ste
12-07-2007, 11:28 AM
yeah this is great! the scale is spot on... Still (personally) I love the look of the first one... the hat and the rabbit just sitting on it! More humor in it i think.
The one in the size comparison image is cool... but has a more familiar robot block head that comes straight off the shoulders! I'm not all keen on the skull like design on it either...

I'm loving this character. keep going... :)

First off GREAT WORK MAN!
Totally agree with comments, I looked at all images first without reading replies and came to the same conclusion as everyone else...I dont like the Hybrid of the two designs (last pic) the in between of two designs is not always the strongest idea...yeah its a cool design but the first version fits the whole idea of this comp WAY better, I think you are "defaulting" to your tired and tested methods for making something look cool instead of focusing on the Wii Comp element...
Theres just something about that first image with the proportion and shapes, the flat head is class looking, maybe he could have holes in that rim for the little guy to fit his feet into, that would look cool I think!

Anyway thats all I have for now, very interested to see how this one evolves...it has that bit of magic man!

I too like the first one more. It looks like he has a mexican attitude. He has more personality. And probably a personality which could lead to interesting dialouges if put into a game. Atleast it would be funny looking at the mustasch moving when he talks.

I've gone back to the original BolTron design by popular demand! What I've done is tightened it up and produced some variations on the face. I'd love to know peoples thoughts if they think I should go with any or none!:)

Eoin - nice idea about the feet sticking through holes, however I think that because Grabbit has not got the use of his legs the current posture suits him more.

I think I'm gonna play around with Grabbit for a bit. I might toy with making his costume tie more into BolTrons, different padding and so on. Thanks for all the feedback from eveyone, it's very helpful!

I like b, and c... Although I like the skinny version with the more square head, with the emoticon like face... That's what I thought you were going for... I think that would be kinda fun and very wii like...

zico
12-11-2007, 06:20 AM
I love these characters.
Definitely D for me.
Looking at all the images to date Grabbit seems to be the leader of the two and D's head seems be a more of a friendly follower type character, which is a better fit.

kipiripi
12-11-2007, 08:33 AM
Definetely D, probably B. Keep it up man.

But B is the favourite i think!

12-11-2007, 05:25 PM
super characters! maybe try a few moustache variations?

Keeganb_2000
12-12-2007, 04:57 AM
Thanks for the Amazing feedback everyone. I've just learned that by posting variations it makes it easy for critiques.. "B".. "B"... "B" nuff said!

iworkat - The emoticon type BolTron has been axed. Nice to see someone liked it though.

Zico - I actually think D suits the character of BolTron aswell. You're right he's the submissive character of the two and a robot with a moustache doesn't seem to suit that personality. However everyone seems to be diggin B and like that saying in Gladiator goes..... "Win the mob and you'll win a GameArtisans Challenge...." or something like that! :)

MrKite - Yeah good suggestion, I think having a few variations in the moustache might open up more crazy looks! He's turning into MrPotatoe Head!

Currently working on some Grabbit variations.

Keeganb_2000
12-16-2007, 03:37 PM
So I've been working on some different looks for Grabbit. There's a gold style armour to match BolTron which I think may look too similar and a bit boring. I moved onto a sort of space marine style look and then went back to a red look with heavy padding. Finally went green for a sort of flyboy spitfire theme. I actually like the last one at the moment but would love other peoples opinions!

BuroKun
12-16-2007, 10:58 PM
how about a Gold version of B?

Ged
12-17-2007, 04:45 AM
these are nice armour designs but they feel generic, I think you could give him some more unique crazy fun armour.

Ste
12-18-2007, 09:11 AM
Agree with Ged...! I like B though. Like get a bit wacky with it. I love the military theme on D... but the colour wouldnt complement the robot...

Deto
12-18-2007, 09:13 AM
Must say I prefer the D most, it has feel written all over it :D Red probably not, I agree the 'gold' fits your theme best :)

edit: The red is best after all, adds contrast to the 'sandy' robot

edit.2: The holes in rabbit's ears in D are great detail, inherit it to the actual design ;)

Keeganb_2000
12-18-2007, 07:01 PM
So I've done up some versions of Grabbit on top of BolTron to get a feel for each colour scheme. I've thrown in some variations on the face of BolTron aswell.

Deto - Yeah man I agree, I like the green myself. Totally not into the gold at all. I really think that Grabbit has to look different to BolTron. I will go with the holes in the ears.

Ste - Looking at all the variation I don't think green works the best. Red and the blueish/White seem to pop the most.

Ged - hmm I will play more on the armour but those changes will prbably go into the final piece. I'm running short on time now.

BuroKun - I couldnt bring myself to do anothert gold version, sorry.

Mogster - I'm suprised people like the two in gold, you're making the decision hard for me! Lol

Gold Warrior = killer!
Space marine = very very cool..
Legion of doom = cool
Green guy stuff = nah is cool but...

the robot guy = big numba 2 mustache!

Ste

They all look cool but the first one is my favourite.

brian_h
12-19-2007, 10:09 AM
The first one is the money...the green compliments the gold and ties nicely with the greenish blue of the eyes. If you want to tie them together a bit more perhaps add some gold accents to the green armor...always looks good..ie masterchief armor and add some bluish green glowing elements like the eyes to the bot...just some ideas to tie them together a bit more. #1 is the money though.

B

brian_h
12-19-2007, 10:11 AM
Just another thing...might what to consider repeating some elements between them if you want to tie them together. The bot has alot of circular elements in it but armor #1 doesn't. The chestplate on #4 or the details on #2 might tie in with the circles. Just a thought.

This is real sweet development. I like how the characters are turning out. 1st is for me though I think will be nice if Grabbit has more detail armour like what brian_h said.

looking forward for more :)

Keeganb_2000
12-23-2007, 05:58 AM
Kalango - I'm not going for the gold in the end man. I know a few peeps said Gold but I love the green and a few have backed me up so I'll go with that :)

Ste - Cheers

brian_h - Thanks man, some great suggestions that make allot of sense.

scorn-maniac - Yup I will add more details on the final image.

Going to move onto the final image now and also work on model sheets on paper as I go. Nothing to show as yet but something to come soon.

I like this a lot. Especially the idea of holes in his ears, as if he can duck his head but forgets to fold his ears back sometimes. I think the gold armor goes well with the robot, just because how they relate to each other and formulate a team. Great stuff. Keep it up. And love the robot. No real critiques here. Sorry. Except, he needs a background. I see a desert scene for the current choice of color on the characters. Since it's so warm already.

You know, I love your sketch right now of the bunny on the robot. But I love the early sketch of when the robot is running with the rabbit on top. Adding that motion into the scene makes it more interesting in my opinion. Hopefully you haven't mentioned this already, or someone else.

_tdc_ - Thanks for the feedback, Your right about the motion i think that alone helped that image alot.

WhiteGuardian - Yeah you're right that armour has a very practical use.

I am just back from Vegas, I was away for most of the holiday and thought I'd have time to finish this when I got back but I see the deadline is tomorrow. Life got in the way. Any chance of an extension, can this happen Fred?
