Hello everyone, it's nice to meet you all. I'm Heather and this will be my first GameArtisans contest. It's going to be a lot of fun and I'm super pumped, so here we go!
For my initial sketches, I tried to think of a simple, cute-looking character. Nintendo games are after all, usually family-friendly.
I for some reason drew her in a parka, so I decided she'll have snow/ice abilities (I live in Winnipeg and it's damn cold right now. Perhaps I was inspired by the weather haha). Sorry it's on ruled paper, it was the only paper handy at the time and I had to get my idea down before I lost it

Later, I tried to think of how she would fight and get around obstacles in a potential game. She now wears a scarf that has a life of its own. It can lift/hurl heavy objects, roll giant snowballs, hoist her up ledges and carry her around when she gets tired. It also happens to keep her quite warm in cold weather.

I wondered if I should instead make a more proportionate character, but I decided against it.

Here's what she looks like so far.

It's still a work in progress of course. I'm thinking of making her outfit a little more complex and interesting.
I could definitely use some critiques. What do you think?

Very approporiate for Wii I think. It's cute and original with the scarf from what I can tell. Maybe the scarf could be like a dead animal fur where the head talks to the girl and has a witty personlity! Cool so far and you're right by staying away from proper proportions, smaller version looks much better, good luck.

I personally like the action in the last sketch
She looks ready for something!
I like chibi-esque characters.
Personally (again with the personally) simplistic characters are some of the most fun.
What you have is a pretty solid concept. Only suggestions I have for you that you can play with are:
* make the white areas fluffy like balls of cotton
* maybe a bell or two? that may add some detail and deminsion to the character.
these are just my suggestions take 'em and run with 'em!

Haha that would be cool! I'm not sure though, I kind of like the scarf as a sort of faceless entity that doesn't really speak, but still has a relationship with the character. If that makes any sense...

You mean like her pom-pom and the rims of her hood and coat would be furry? I like it! I could also put bells on the front of her coat, instead of pom-poms. It'd be pretty cute if the player could hear little bells jingling as the character ran around on the screen.
Yes! :2thumbs:

Hey nice character design. The scarf idea is pretty nifty too. I'm with the previous two on the chicibi proportions. Her hair looks much better too in the last pic.

Wow, great idea.
As personal preference, I like the wholesome + mature look of the normal proportioned girl...but then I see that little thumbnail on the bottom of the last page....ahmygawd<3<3<3

@yoyomon: Thanks! Her hair tends to look a little different every time I draw her, unfortunately. I'd like to get the right look and then be able to reproduce it in each drawing of her.
@BuroKun: Thank you!
@Rayartz: I'm working on it as we speak :thumb:
@Spacey: Haha! I'm glad you like it! That's her "Game Over" look.

She's like the Ice Climbers, except 10 times more awesome. I'm really looking forward to seeing the end result of this gal =D

You definitely have the cutes character in the competition. The scarf is a wacky approach to an off beat character that would fit on the Wii like Twilight Princess, or Stretch Panic. Put some color on her!

Can't wait to see your final composition of this cute little girl and her swirling scarf.....

Thank you all for your encouraging comments!
I've been so distracted with the Holidays, I'm sorry I haven't updated. There will be colour in my next update so I can start on the final composition!

I think your character design is much better, but as someone already mentioned, "Stretch Panic" on the PS2 beat you to it. Of course, I seem to recall that game giving you only one paper thin hand and the game itself being rather...ummm, unattractive, to be polite. I like the idea that the scarf can manipulate the snow to attack/defend.
