Nice lineup of prizes.

Just want to add a little info to the mix. The grand prize is actually more impressive than it seems at first.

With the release of version 3, Maxon has actually merged BodyPaint with Cinema4D. Even whey you just purchase BodyPaint3D R3.x you get the full entry level version of Cinema4D R10.x. That includes all of the basic modeling, rendering, and animation tools. You don't get the higher end features that include cloth, hair, CA, and advanced rendering of the addon modules, but you DO get a full fledged CG suite. The real, practical difference between BodyPaint and C4D is in the startup layout, which can be changed back and forth on the fly.

Its an excellent prize, really. As a longtime C4D user, I cannot recommend it enough. The lucky winner will be one happy camper. :)

i didnt think id ever say this...EVER...
but fred, i THINK you shouldnt be SO hardcore with the prizes :\

Dont get me wrong, i'd be the first to say that these prizes rock. but i think youre going to way too much effort for them prizes.
NOt to forget that the prizes arent the MAIN reason behind competing.
I'd much rather prefer normal prizes for alll eternity to excellent prizes for unkown length of time, as im guessing fred is the only one who is financially supporting the site.
I'd wish i was working so i could donate as much as i could.

WOW dude those prices are awsome! I was looking into getting body paint and its very pricy. Fred you Rock! That being said I do agree with Butt_sahib that the prizes shouldnt be the main reason to do these comps. I hope your not fronting the bill for them.

@butt_sahib: In this day and age, where there are so many CG forums, a site owner has to take advantage of every gimmick that they can. Sadly, that includes incentives such as prizes. The bigger the prize the greater the traffic. I've seen other sites suffer big time by having fewer or more mediocre prizes.

Prizes + Contests = More Traffic
More Traffic = Good
Prizes + Contests = Good

c4d and bodypaint rock! I gotta say as a beginner in 3D I found it alot more intuitive than max though after a while you begin to see what its strengths and weaknesses are, bodypaint is definitely a strength :D

Im too busy for compos right now :( hopefully I can show you people my game for uni when its done tho.

KINDA, SORTA OT.....

Depends on the version you're talking about. R8 was a real turning point for the package. Ever since that, Maxon's software has made drastic leaps and bounds with every version. If you look at the Studio or XL versions of the package, you'll see a lot of the key limitations have disappeared.

The C4D you remember is very likely not the C4D that exists now. Totally different beasts. If you haven't used R10.x then you have no idea what you're missing. There is some very serious power under the hood, especially in the area of character animation. (Just try making a complex production quality rig in Maya. It'll take you 1/2 the time to make the exact same thing in C4D. No joke.)

Let's just put it this way, I used to be a 3ds max user for a number of years. Now, I'm animating a (not so) short CG film entirely C4D. I've been using C4D for almost 4-5 years now. I can't imagine going back.

All I'll say is that the winner of that BodyPaint3D commercial license might very well be tempted to add on some modules once they find out how easy and powerful the "new" C4D really is.

About the only practical limitation to C4D is that there's no official Renderman support yet. However, C4D users can purchase versions of FinalRender Stage-2, VRay, Maxwell, & FryRender. That's about the only thing I see that's keeping C4D out of larger animation houses right now. XRefs are in C4D so that's not a problem anymore and the advanced character animation tools are much more than up to the task of film production. It's that darn lack of Renderman support.... THAT and the fact that moving a whole studio to a new package is very expensive.

Back to your regularly scheduled thread, already in progress.
