A tutorial on character design by the member "Petar" originally posted in the Wrath of the Death Knights mini competition.

I highly recommend this one.

Sorry I could not upload a higher quality. Photobucket and imageshack only allow up to 1mb and this is the best I could get.

Is there any decent tutorials for working in Alchemy and with conceptualizing silhouettes? I also have trouble drawing evenly in photoshop, is there a plugin for a mirror tool?

Beartastic

It's not in Alchemy but Darren Yeow has a good writeup on silhouettes here: http://www.stylus-monkey.com/ideation-process-part-2/

The first video shows how he does symmetrical and asymmetrical silhouettes using photoshop, painting and mirroring to come up with something cool.

That's helpful. I subscribed to his youtube channel.

For alchemy I want to know how to make cyborg looking details with the random shapes.

Could someone answer me one my question please?
There are a lot of tutorials, basing on photo as reference.
( sample -- http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1132380&postcount=43 )

Could you explain me - how this tutorial can help to study?
as for me, this is not right way... may be I am wrong. but just explain me please--what tasks I should create before such drawing using photo ref? May be I will take from this tutorial something using for me and will use this way myself? but for now I think, the nature and real model are the best and usefull references for artist...

It depends what you want to learn from the photo ref. The sample you showed has nice contrast in lighting; Giving interesting shadows. Maybe that's one thing to learn from that tutorial. But also can learn anatomy and expression of the face.
It's true best way to learn is study real life models, but not everyone has that opportunity. So they look for images online/books to learn from because it's quickest and easiest way to get.

In the sample's gif image is nice step by step work, showing first sketching to get the anatomy and figure as close as the image ref. then blocking in shadows and refining later.

I use photo references mostly because I have to learn something quickly to do a job. Like for example in the daily sketches challenge I wanted to draw a gorilla, I did without photo ref but afterwards I researched and studied the gorilla quickly from a photo and it turned out a whole lot better and more accurate.
I do that process a lot if I want to learn something like shading or colour theories.

Hope I helped.
