2d Mini - Juggernaut Tanks!

http://www.30lives.com/gaorg/2D_029_battleship_splash.jpg

Hey everyone! Remember me? I used to run these 2d minis until I vanished/got-engaged. Now I'm back and ready to rock and roll!

And what's more rock and roll than tanks? How about even BIGGER TANKS? Like, super-sized, UBER, MONSTROUS, EPIC tanks! JUGGERNAUT TANKS!

The lowdown:
The design team for a new action game calls you up asking for a design for their "JUGGERNAUT" class tank.

This tank was built with the singular idea that 'bigger is better'. Regular tanks look like babies to this big daddy. Capable of flattening cities, armies, heck, even whole countrysides, this tank is supposed to stand out as a big boss of all tanks. Here's what they asked you for:

-It should be big. It should look like it took an army to build and takes an army to run!
-It also should be land-based.
-It also should look like it can withstand a lot of abuse, and dish out a lot in return.

All the other specs of the design are up to you though--treads or hover technology? Lasers or howitzers? Iron or ...uh...something else? Show us your most badass JUGGERNAUT TANK!

I'm the same, I got super pumped thinking this was 3d.

Great concept Joe. There's some super sweet references on Dark Roasted Blend here (http://www.darkroastedblend.com/2007/03/strange-tanks.html) and here (http://www.darkroastedblend.com/2007/11/strange-tanks-part-2.html).

Looks like a great comp ahead! Will give it a try.

MattBlack, if you are going to make a big building like the ref you showed, I think much smaller wheels would make the main structure look bigger. Emphasis on "much" smaller. Maybe tiny wheels.

Here's my sketch. We were talking about the old Rampage game in class the other day, and after reading this challenge all I could think of was giant gorilla tank with jetpacks that move his huge arms. I had a different version with tank treads for rear feet. Loooootttssss more rendering and details to add. What a fun challenge!

Sure! That's a valid way to get final perspective correct in particular.

BrendanBax

Sinok426-Tha bottom left one is OOOOOoooosome.

What if you combine the train-like feel of the bottom left but had an "engine" like the top right elevated over the rest of the vehicle... and maybe it rides on tracks over the cars and picks up different ammo types for the massive guns? Just throwing out ideas of what those shapes could actually be.

Kodiak
07-16-2010, 07:40 AM
I'm a big fan of the idea of something like a cross between the NASA launch crawler, a massive steam shovel and lots of guns, so your second from the bottom on the left looks awesome to me, Sinok.

my concept, first the top :

so his displacement is like a basic tank but it can do lateral displacement.

David79 - woW, now that is what I call a juggernaut! Half tank, half battleship. The rotating guns on top, like those found on a battleship, was a great addition.

Davek, I really like the concept. You might loose a bit of its impressiveness since it's front view. Not sure how you'll compensate for that. Hope it works out.

BrendanBax
07-16-2010, 03:28 PM
Davek - really cool looking. I like the center ring. Reminds me of Iron Man or something. Like the ultimate War Machine!

David79 - hmm... needs more cowbell! Seriously tho, pretty beastly and detailed mock up. Then only that comes to mind is what makes it really stand out? Like...

Hey did you see that awesome giant tank drawing?
Yea... which one?
You know the one with the...

Its impressive all the same and I know this is early... so I'm really excited to see how a lot of these entries come out.

@Brendanbax ^____^
I am new to this but I believe a single illustration is ok.. I am doing just one illustration.

Ok, now I tried to fix the perspective, took a while but maybe not so much obvious change.
Tried also to add minor details and the color scheme in no more than 10 miutes..
I think later I will re-draw using pencil, maybe I can add details faster and more precise.
Anyway, here is my WIP for today ^__^ (I come from a comics background and I notice the tank is looking cartoonish but I will try to do something about that later on)

Hello, everybody. At last I found time to post and show my progress.
Mitch-king - Very interesting concepts. I like top right version. Waiting for progress.
Sinok426 - Very strong. Hope, there will be the day, when I will be able to create so alive art.
angry_ookami - I like your point of view. Good decision to make frontal cabine in feral style. It looks great.
Slava Gedich - Wonderful. Sudden death from the sky. But I would add some more guns, to make him more agressive.
David79 - it is just beautiful. Can not wait to see your progress.
Davek - another great concept. That guy looks very strong.
karart - Do not stop, and result will come!
MattBlack - good begining. More guns, more details.

And here some of my first pencil sketches.

Hm...weird.maybe they have some clever way to block remote hotlinking. I guess you could just post a link for now.

If you want to attach the image directly, try making it a little smaller, dimensions wise and filesize wise--the attachment manager might be barking about the size of it or something.

Very quick stretch just as a rough concept at present. Hoping to do a much better image this weekend.

I decided to go huge and not very far in the future.
The tanks official name is: Omega 1.
Mainly used as a mobile fortress with proven resistance to even a direct nuclear strike (not including personnel) this tank can flatten city's into submission its main cannon only having been fired once. Holding an aircraft carrier style airport 30 tanks/personnel carriers and 2000 men (both soldiers and engineers) and costing millions to move and operate this tank contains its own steel works operational while the tank is stationary to make its own repairs, Plus farming land for a degree of self sustainability,
Despite its enormous cost this tank has kept an unprecedented peace in the middle of a worn torn Europe with the mobilization of the tank usually resulting in surrender before arrival.

Hello again people!! It was a hard week, could only check/work today

ACap Thanks for the "Feral" comment, actually after reading ur note I started to think I wanna make the tank less "hi-tech" more "Brutal" :D , I like your designs, pencils always ROCK!! I am seeing the progress you r making but will u stick to the subtle color scheme or add more color variations later?
David79 Your design was very nice.. too bad u won't finish it.. maybe later? yeah and about the blindage.. still thinking to add or not to add.. :S
Davek coming out goood!! Need to see how it will turn out!
Sinok426 .. Now it looks like a native-american/indian Totem/tank! Just like Nausica's Oahm.. Nature's revenge on mankind :D
crrrutch Very balanced mass! looks very brutal to me and I liked the front gate where smaller tanks could be deployed!
Diissar Great tank! But I think it would be better if bigger!
redpandafire .. Jaw dropping it is!!
W1r3d what about the Anvil? Playing transformice lately :P ?
Melrick nice progress through that little time :D waiting to see more progress!

crrruthThe armor is awesome I love the plating. personally I think it is already awesome but it will be cool to see how you improve it.
Diissar another awesome design. The rounded design is cool, good for deflecting hits. looking forward to progress. The turret head is looking a little out with the rounded beginning and triangle tip.
yamsoup nice start.looking forward to seeing the size of this thing.
LabaisI am liking you latest design a lot more. The angle is alot better to for showing the tank design.
Melricknice start, waiting for you progress.
angry_ookami your details and linework are awesome.you have some extreme firepower going on.
Kirilotyou too have some extreme firepower. You have the missile pods though which I think gives you the advantage on angry-o-kami lol.

Hi everyone, I havent been around here for a long while. Thought I'd pull together a late entry for this one to try to get me working again, I've never tried doing hardware before so this is all new to me:

Heres the thumb I'm using:
31715

And heres a little bit of modelling I've been doing to get the perspective and stuff right on the wheel, not sure whether I'll go with an eliptical wheel or circular, maybe eliptical looks more tank like? The idea with this tank is that the wheel is huge and made from solid armour so its about as indestructable as the body, maybe more so. This means that the tracks are no longer a weak point. Both halves of the wheel can move in opposition to each other to turn the tank where it stands and it just rolls over towns and defences, the wheel has a certain amount of spring built in also to allow the tank to withstand drops from a reasonable height.

A very quick render.

Some really nice painting and designs so far.

Awesome mini! I totally forgot this competition, remembered it, then forgot it again and then finally managed to paint something during the last day before the deadline. Good times! ^___^

Hope everybody's been well, I see a lot crazy designs on this thread. Can't wait to see the finished pieces from you all.

Here's mine, due to the absentmindedness of me myself and I, it is a quite speedyish. Had a ton of fun while painting it though. :-)

Take care and good luck!

Hello again. There are so many things happened after my last visit!
Samhell - Well, I am happy to see you in the ranks of our juggernaut army. You still can complete your art, even if it will be submited after deadline.Your piece looks very promising, but for me - it is too small details on your juggernaut. Add some - and it will be much better.
nihilicon - Very interesting design. This great track will give him great protection, but if your cannon recoils, the tank can fall on one's back. So you can to add some supportive beams.
Melrick - Good work, man. Looking forward to see you in the next competition.
Wikz - Very good. Your artwork have much more to say than my. Keep working over details and I would also add some scared people on the foreground.
angry_ookami - It is just beautiful. Well done. Good luck!
Arokai - One more great devastator. Looks very interesting. I would add some motion around it. People or war scene. Looking forward to see more.
Slava Gedich - Good finish, comrad. Good luck
kirilot - Man, it looks amazing, but I would add some more order to the chaos on the side planes, may be some cannons. Now it looks so empty and I am just wonder - what will you put there. Waiting for your progress.
rawwad - Amazing work. Good luck.
crrrutch - Great job, dude. Good luck.
Mitch-king - It looks fantastic, man. Those hand on foreground. Love your style. Good luck!
labais - It looks very dangerous. Waiting for your update.
YamSoup - Good begining. Keep going. Hope, I will see your final.
Diissar - Very solid piece. Love your color. Looking forward to see more.
D3struct-o-Bot - Beautiful design. Looks very interesting. May be some more guns? Sorry, That is my weakness. When I see some free space on the tank, I want to add a gun. So, in the end I can often, if I am not restricting myself, to have one big Hedgehog with an enormous guns. But your piece looks good even without it, they will just add some danger feeling to his shape.
W1r3d - Your Juggernaut looks very dangerous. Looking forward to see your colors.

And here is my final. I am added some more details and colors. Hope you will like it. Thank to all, who followed my progress, and good luck everybody!

Hey everyone-- a little less than 24 hours remaining!

Just to remind you guys--this comp has a soft deadline, meaning you can still submit AFTER I enable voting...though the longer you wait the less time your entry has in front of voters!

Be sure to upload your entry to:

Im out of time so this is as final (http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/minis/finals_painting_3168.html) as it gets:

@ACap: Nice image, I like the gothic-ness of it. Thank you for the feedback, I understand your thinking on the recoil but in my imagined world the fire ray thing would have no recoil, but also there are stabilisers at the rear of the body.
@Samhell - I really like the design of your tank, it fulfills the brief really well and looks like its got a shit load of bad ass surprises stored inside ;-) dont think the guy with the launcher has much chance.
@Melrick - Shame you've quit bud it was going well. Hope you had fun anyway.
@Wikz: Like you're thinking on this, really different. I'd a like to have seen him more up close though. Good luck.
@angry_ookami: Great design, are you sure its got enough guns though? ;-)
Slava Gedich: Lovely paint. Maybe looks a little too small for the brief but nice render anyway. Good luck.
@crrrutch: You totally inspired me for this. I love that entry, really beautiful final image. Very nice work.
@Arokai: Dig in bro! plenty hours left and remember the deadline is soft. Good luck.
@rawwad: I keep looking at this again and again, beautiful image, well done.
@kirilot: Love the texture and the howitzer feel to it. Good luck on finishing.
@Sinok426: Your imagination puts us all to shame. This is beautiful and different and i really like it, its tank enough.
@D3struct-o-Bot: Cant wait to see the paint. More updates please.
@Diissar: Lovely paint there and nice design.
@labais: Your painting is really beautiful, love the looseness so far, i love both your ideas any one could be a winner. can you give us an update soon.
@Norvik: Love your concept, hope you get finished.

Sorry to anyone I didnt mention. I had fun, see you all next challenge :-)
