Ignore most of the text below. I'm doing just one environment at the moment due to the scale of it all. Doing quite a bit of stuff. Will be doing a few random objects and a vehicle aswell I think.
Anyway, hope that you like it.
-------
Hey all. Currently working on some portfolio pieces. Since I'm mainly an environment guy that's what you're gonna get. I hope you will like what I have to show. Can't promise more than I will be doing my best. Hopefully that will be enough to get me an entry position as an environment artist somewhere :)
I plan on having three small scenes (and i mean small) with a few props in them. I will show it off in two ways.
1) Environment picture
2) Every prop by itself outside of the environment.
There are currently three planned environments.
1) Sci fi - Think high tech doors, corridors and bright colors.
2) Old Skool ghetto - Think the 60´s gone bad or something.
3) Fantasy tavern - Chairs, tables, open fire, mugs, etc.
I think all of these three environments will show off most of my skills. I plan on having weapons etc aswell for the final portfolio. I'm currently working on the urban scene but I don't feel ready showing anything just yet. You would just laugh ;)
In the meanwhile, check my new webpage design i'm working on.

Ps: Thanks for checking this out. Help me out now guys. Jobs are great, crit my ass ;)
sounds good man.. I like your portfolio website, its direct and to the point.. no zillion clicks to see your art.. just right on in your face.. :thumb:

Checked out your site and I agree with Prime Evil, it's nice and straight to the point. It's going to be great once you get some fillers in there (artwork):thumb:
If you are going with scifi, consider a hospital scene or central control center. These always look impressive if done it right.

Cheers guys. :)
Anyway. Been working on the scene for awhile and it's starting to take shape. My previous plans are a bit wasted though, I've decided to increase the size of the current enviro a bit to include a night club-entrance aswell. Im a slut for glow.
There's not much that i feel ready to show yet but here's the busstop at least to keep this thread alive. Reuploaded a new picture so the last message i wrote was fairly out of date.
Anyway, Some tweaks left as you can see but it's getting there. Currently working on the transparency so thats why some areas are a bit funky. Damn i hate mental ray. No psds allowed...

Here's the layout. What do you think? Are the proportions/scales of things correct?
The thing to the left will be a night club. I will seriously ramp up the polycount for the whole enviro later when i've nailed the design and layout down if you are worried about the blocky state of it all. Also note that I'm focusing on the objects right now. The other textures on the environment are only mood helpers right now. I hate modeling in "grays".
I see you wanted to also do a futuristic environment .. one thing i'd like to see and you don't see very often in portfolio's are sci fi urban area's like parks etc.. you know, a bright happy future instead of the more gritty dark futures everyone is coming up with

Yeah i'm gonna fix that... it's the only thing I have left on that part but I can't be arsed to figure out how i want it done yet :)

I was planning on having a happy nice bright white future but not a park. ;)
Anyway, here's a streetlight for you. Somehow the glow doesn't want to be saved when i render... and that sucks. All finished pieces and specs can be found at my page. www.pigged.net

They are great but in this world of graphic demands you need to really pop these out of the ordinary. What I feel is missing is that extra finesse, those extra details that makes the emplyer go "Well this guy has an eye for something extra". These items, although worn, have no real bearing of history.
Like those streetlights, where are the dents from kids kicking on them, or birds shitting? Where are the specular differences from scraped of metal surfaces? The mud that splahes up from bypassing cars?
Nice start though!

Thanks for the crits. I really hope so guys, Everything will be put in the portfolio. Haven't been able to work as much as I've wanted due to my sickness but yeah. It's getting there.
I have modelled and unwrapped alot of city assets lately and I'm in the texturing phase right now. Will probably put most of them on a single texture map. The bigger pieces will be on their own. I want to be able to show them off outside of the environment piece in a nice and lovely quality.
Björn, I will try to bring more things like that into my pieces.
Cheers guys.

Oink, Looks nice. Had had to laugh at your comment about glows... me too. Anyway, I love the trashcan. I did an environment for a class that was a subway station to hell, I did a lot of trash and debris modeling for that and I appreciate your attention to detail. Good luck with how it comes out.

Thanks man. Getting a comment from someone likes what you do every now and then is great. But don't forget to crit me :)
Here's a new addition. My inspiration has been really low on this (but I think i managed to get something decent out of it even though it's not one of my best pieces. Couldnt just trash it.) since i've worked on it during my sick-period and I just want to move on... that's why i'm throwing it in the complete section. Don't fret though. It looks quite nice in the environment. ;)
Anyway, over to the debris and other parts. Will go a bit faster. Modelled quite a bit of pieces while I was sick. They just need the textures so that's what i'm gonna do.
EDIT: The next prop pieces i will make (after this environment project is over) will have higher specs. Looked at gears of war and they were quite high. Far more than i thought!... So that's what i'm aiming for.

Rerendered xisk, My dom war 2 entry. Feels great to be able to see some faults on him myself. A sign of improvement on my part I hope. Now I know what to think of when I do my next character.
You can find him on www.pigged.net
Back to the environment and the old character I need to tweak a bit so I can put him online.
EDIT; weee. Just found an "old" project of mine. The character i was working on before Dom war 2 and my internship that is. There's alot of environment stuff in there that I can use. The character itself is not finished though.
I usually make an environment before I do the character itself. That's why there is alot of finished pieces in that project.

Enough of this shit. The bastards have teared up every single prop i've made recently and it has to stop.
Here comes the "police" to give them a smackdown! I wanted to go big, clunky and mean. The government is watching and they will interefere if they feel like it. Anyway. Normals and textuers to come.
Haven't fixed the smoothing yet. Unwrap and map done. Time to tango. The textures will hopefully make it alot better. :3

Well, I think it turned out pretty well considering that this is my first vehicle ever. Quite fun. I think I should do a mech sometime. If someone fixes me up with a neat concept I'll make it 3D.
Here's the car. 99% finished, specular tweaks are the only things left and that will be arranged for when I put it in the environment. Might do some minor tweaks that you suggest for me. Not much though since I will be starting to send out job applications soon. (Tuesday / Wednesday)
I hope that i qualify for a junior environment artist position. Now i'm gonna go sleep. Leave a comment for me so I have something to dream about tonight. If not... Im gonna blast ya!
Facts:
The logo and flag-skull was made by my girlfriend, Arvaker. I couldn't be arsed to do it. :)
It's not all complete yet as I said above.
Quick lighting setup.
If you can come up with a better explanation for A.R.S.E then Anti rebellion system enforcer, Please do tell.
Yes. It will fire it's guns and it will greatly contribute to the smog in the city when i put it in the environment.

Heh. Noticed a few misses on the car now that I will fix for tonight. Well... over to the environment piece :3
(Flag doesnt render correctly for example). The glow not turning up in the reflection doesn't matter since there wont be any reflection like that in the scene. I just wanted to play around with it a little.
Anyway, I would like crits guys... please don't turn gameartisans into a soulless community with asspats and crits for the famous only. Im here to learn and get a job someday... which will probably take ages. ;)

You're too fast, you make me look like a snail.. or something. Great work, however for a battle tank it sure does look clean (it's probably new out of the factory right? ;) ) I did a quick paintover (it's not that accurate just to highlight some stuff that I think is missing). (Click here (http://cgmonkey.u42.surftown.se/crit/po_01.jpg)) I'll post some in depth for you when I get home.
Yeah good stuff!

Goody. Will do some of those bigger changes when I get home. After that I will start tweaking the environment (Should go quick). Man I want to finish this baby today and make it ready for portfolio use. I can taste the finish line :ack:
Thanks for the well put crits. This will increase the "life"-aspect of the piece alot. Got blind to it all when I worked on it. *throws cookie*
So yeah. Some quick dirt and fixes to the things I noted earlier and I will be done with it. Should only take 1-2 hours of my time. Another hour or two in the environment and I think we will be set. (Most pieces are finished, I just need to put them in there and set up some lights). :)
the wheels look a little funky on the vehicle, i would make them bigger and either move the middle axle back or add a third axle in to close them in together a bit. the vehicle itself looks like it ways a ton and those puny wheels wouldnt support or move such a heavy duty machine.

great work on props. But don`t u find that vehicle lacks wings for rear wheels. Now they just penetrate into the sides of the APC :(
