maybe this question has been asked somewhere in the previous 51 pages on this thread, but i was hoping for a tiny clarification on the instructions.

it states that "Your character must wield a single artifact or a pair of similar artifacts"

For the invoker class, can the artifact be worn (eg...as a broach, crown, other jewelry) or does it need to be something hand held

thanks, i know you must be pretty busy right now.

Well jsut got back and think I have a very nice concept to work upon :> time for looong refrance searching and a little write up lol. off i go for 2 months. tis war

FredH
02-17-2008, 11:09 AM
superclops, it should be a hand held weapon. It's true that an ultimate artifact can be anything that resonates power, but for this comp, it'd be better if you kept your powerful weapons clearly shown as something hand held and something everyone is already familiar with as being a weapon (sword, gun, scepter, mace, axe, staff, rod, wand etc).

Styx
02-17-2008, 11:15 AM
what about gauntlets?
gauntlets that gives the character the "ultimate power" to hold a very heavy weapon, or so.
is this permitted?

superclops
02-17-2008, 11:41 AM
thanks for the quick reply Fredrik,

My only problem with this is now a magic casting character doesnt have the opportunity to cast magic from their hands... which is kind of cool:)
It needs to emmit from items they are holding.

rules are rules though, i'll adjust my concepts accordingly

Just add some FX on the gauntlets and it should be cool.

Not to mention gauntlets can techinqually be a weapon, well at least they are in all those games with monks and stuff since you can punch people with them.

Same goes for footwear too which would be fun to see implemented into someones character

FredH
02-17-2008, 12:39 PM
superclops --> Interesting. Where did you find in the rules that says Invokers or clericons can not use their hands to wield or cast magic? Spellcasters do what they always do, use themselves to cast magic. Artifacts just give them additional powers. The artifact can be used to maybe enhance their spells, or it can be used to launch effects of their own. It's up to you:thumb:

Does our character could use some innate power?
For example I make a reptilian Stalker, can he use his venom to kill his opponent, and at the same time use a summoning artifact to summon other creature?

An other question who is not totally clear for me.
The age of magic start after the use of the Ultimate weapon, Thousand years ago, or does it just appear with the awakening of the machines?

Gauntlets and whatever else your imaginations can come up with should be perfectly fine.:)
Sorry Marcus, but you are also a moderator of this competition? Your saying can be taken as word of God?

Thank you.

I never thought about a planet name. It's actually a tough one:doh:

About your questions prayingmantis, yes, he can use his natural simple innate powers (don't cast a fireball or anything.. because then it would look wrong). And about when magic started, sometime during the 1000 years disapearance of the machines. Probably 500 years after, it's up to you really. I left the story open enough so that artists can let loose with their creativity:)

Ok thank you, it was important for me because I made a background for my char and he uses his innate power to increase is assassination skills.
And for the magic era It was linked to the creation of my char :)
But reading through the brief this little word "now" make me thought this era was really young.

I've got a question, is it a bad idea to make part of my submission partially cute?

FredH
02-19-2008, 03:02 PM
Cute? Not such a good idea. Read some of the judge comments about muppet_man's entry last year. She didn't look tough enough for the job.. although it was a fantastic entry.

Shadownami92
02-19-2008, 03:05 PM
Is it possible to get a link to the submission? I'm not exactly sure where to find it.

Nevermind, I found it...

confracto
02-19-2008, 03:17 PM
yeah, I can find his entry, and I recalled it immediately, but I'm under the impression that what the judges had to say was NEVER posted. which is a real shame. I'd be great if we could read them. I know it'd help all of us create more amazing entries this year.

nm, found it!

yes, it is a bit of a long read, but well worth it. ...it's actually surprising how close muppet man came to placing so much higher. ...and neat to see all the entries that judges liked, but never placed anywhere.

and yes, I'm trying to answer as many of my own questions as I can...I know you're doing enough of it!

Hi Guys,

A silly question, but an important one to be sure of :

Must the mesh be contiguous ?

Or is it fine to have it be as many pieces as you want ?

Thanks

Hi all!

My first post here, so sorry it is a question:)

Entry pages on DW home site are modereted?
I fill a link to thread, the name and some profile details, but I don't see my entry on the entrys table. There is some waiting time or something? Or may I do something wrong?
I don't click submit final, it is for final images and close my competition entry, right?

BiG ToE
02-23-2008, 06:29 AM
yes, after you join a team, there is a slight wait before your thumbnail shows up. Give it time it will be there. And don't hit the submit button until your done.

Ack. An idea i have is not exactly "cute" but its along those lines. I figured i could convey the power of the artifact though to help show that the job would definitly get done. i'll have to keep this in mind though. Good point.

Judges.. man.

Imagolith
03-05-2008, 09:59 PM
Are the entries gonna be judged by how well they fit the story or just the originality. I read what the judges last year had to say about the entries they picked and it only was about the character it self, which to me seems totally useless this year as it should be judged by the best appropriate character for the story, just as it would be when working for real. I have created a full story just to define what my character must be like. As the story this year is all about a hero that will win over everyone, Example #1: As in the lord of the rings, Balrog didn't rule that world even thou it looked so awesome and powerful, the most appropriate character to be the hero was a humble hobbit. I mean, drawing a hobbit as a hero without telling the story it would seem totally crazy and everyone would laugh. It's all about the characters around your character that gives your character, uhm-ye... character. Hehe. So ok, my example maybe wasn't the best, but hopefully you get the point. It's all about the balance, but without background info on the character, it will only be a empty shell and I can't work like that. It would be impossible and stupid (in my opinion) to just pick one design, when there are astronomical amount of combinations and possibilities, and even then it wouldn't be good enough as it's lifeless and has no value what so ever. example #2: 20cm could be tall, if everyone else in the story are 5cm tall. Basically I'm totally lost, so until I get a answer, I'll refine my story just to define my character.

So, will a background story be taken in consideration in the judging phase or am I doomed, hehe?

Sorry for any eventual confusion, it's late, hope you understand my question.
Thank you Fred!

BiG ToE
03-05-2008, 10:15 PM
backstories aren't apart of the rules, so they shouldn't make much of a difference when it comes to judging.

Imagolith
03-06-2008, 09:05 AM
So... we are supposed to make a character based on a coincidental design and the judging phase will only be a "what looks coolest", basically.

Why is the mission then:

"Your mission, with the help of a powerful magical artifact, is to enter an ancient forgotten world via wormholes, destroy all rival enemy forces sent by other planets, crush the awakening machines, and bring back the secret of technology in order to dominate all opposing forces, their planets and their wretched citizens once and for all!!"

Edit:

"Backstories aren't apart of the rules". No, but they make the character and a character is what we are supposed to create. Maybe I'm taking this too seriously, but I can't do anything just by coincidence. That's all. There are so many cool creatures in games that get killed by the hundred just 20min in the game. Design alone doesn't make a character, it's the role in the story that defines it.

I'm supposed to make a Balrog then (looks cool), I would rather make a hobbit (is more suitable for the mission given)? (See my post above, example #1 if this doesn't make sense)

"so they shouldn't make much of a difference when it comes to judging." Well I'm not meaning it should make a advantage for those with stories, I just mean, will the judges take the background info on the character as seriously as the design as these things together is what makes a character.

Nobody should get offended by this. :)

BiG ToE
03-06-2008, 10:53 AM
We where all given the same backstory (http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/events/3/rules/index.php), its up to your what you do with it.

You can add on to help you get a better idea of where your character is coming from, but judges wont see it unless they pop into your thread.

Imagolith
03-06-2008, 03:22 PM
Yes we where given the same starting point for a story, but creating a character not knowing what the enemies are or their habitats, is rather difficult. A fire character in a surrounding where all the enemies are of wood, would make all the difference. Just a simple example, but this is much more complicated than that. So to create a character that gives the feel that it could smash 9planets just like that is not what I call concept art, it's more of an illustration contest. If you ask me.

Well, a word from Fred would be nice, just to clear this question off my mind.

BiG ToE
03-06-2008, 03:53 PM
I think you right. This is all about looks.

I'm supposed to make a Balrog then (looks cool), I would rather make a hobbit (is more suitable for the mission given)? (See my post above, example #1 if this doesn't make sense)

Its all up to the judges i guess, but since this is a comp where the mission is to create a *character* i think a hobbit-like concept should win against a balrog. Sure the balrog is powerful and strong but in my eyes its just a creature, beast, with no character to speak of. A beast with nothing in its eyes is really scary, but lacks character.

So to create a character that gives the feel that it could smash 9planets just like that is not what I call concept art, it's more of an illustration contest. If you ask me.

Sure its concept art, concept art doesnt only revolve around characters, there is environmental concept art, creature concept(i think thats pretty much what you refer to). But this concept art comp is supposed to be focused on characters, though many seem to think its a creaturedesign competition, i hope the judges doesnt think so or else im screwed.. :p I have also, like you focused alot on character. You do have the option of including the story on one or more of your submitted sheets, though i would concider it a distraction from the images. The ideal thing would be to be able to include a description/story separately. Though one could argue that you should be able to tell that story in your images of your character, in your char's eyes, body language, expressions etc..

Just hope the judges doesnt mistake this for a creaturedesign comp..

Good luck everyone! :)

-Niklas

EDIT: Maybe it's just me not in the know but what is this UnearthlyChallenge.com? Has it been mentioned before?

I was really glad to be part of the contest, can't wait for the next.

Fredh, I was wondering how can I purchase the GA's poster?
I'm looking forward to see how it looks like.

Thanx
