rv_el - There is a reason why it says "New intense judging system!" This year, when the war is complete and ready for judging, there will be a series of elimination rounds until only 50 remain.... Only these 50 will then be judged. This way, only the best entries are garaunteed to be seen by the final panel of top judges. Anyways, more on this when the war starts:thumb:

Oh, FredH, not sure if its too late to suggest anything. Well, I have no idea what the theme is. But, if there are mechanical things involved (well, it would be nice none the less) it would be good if we could do something like 5mb gif animation with the character/thing/machine showing related things. Ie if there's some constantly rotating parts (generators, cogs and gears and so on) or simply some special breathing, attacking, blood pumping action and so on, it would give some life to otherwise so static presentation :)

Some designs might require actual 'idle'-animation, that's what I mean :)

I nearly did the D&AD animation comp last year, radiohead tune 'the clock' but after about 4 times listening through it drove me mental and was far too long, plus i preffered other tracks on that album alot more.. anyhow.

I know it won't happen but it would be great if there was a sub-contest on the forum level, for the enviro guys to model a winning pedestal for their forum's character winners to stand on. Like pedestals in the past it wouldn't count toward the judging of the character.

Cold - showing your progress is a must. If people don't, they could potentially be disqualified. The best thing to do is create something you are comfortable with so that no matter who's art you see, or what people say about yours, you will not loose inspiration during the comp. Just have fun:)

Not only that, but there's really no need to be paranoid. In my opinion, I think the competitions are supposed to be as much of a challenge as it is a learning experience. If you hold out till the last second, you're not letting people learn from you...or allowing yourself to learn from others (unless, i guess, you show it privately to someone) and I think that kind of defeats the purpose.

well, the over all format is the same as the main comps here, the main difference would be the size. Here there may be 30 or so people envolved, maybe half of that finish. The DomWar, your looking at 100's of finished art work(this year). Plus your not just modeling for yourself, your modeling for your forum. The DomWar brings this feeling of family out of everyone in the forum, they help you, because they know in the end, the better your work is, the better the chance is that the forum will win. Bragging rights, for a whole year.

You don't have to pick which forum you'll be fighting under until after the theme is announced. Everyone gets very excited before the war, which is why you see people expressing their allegiance so soon.

The final images are just normal renders, straight out of your 3d modeling package of choice with some post effects done in photoshop. Just finishing your model is going to be tough enough as it is, getting it in a game engine would be more work than its worth.

Hey guys I’m a little late to the party concerning the DW3 announcement but I have to say it’s good to have the smell of war in the air again. I’m looking forward to participating this year and hopefully I can make a better presentation than last years entry when the moment of truth comes around. Unfortunately this year I may be fighting the good fight with one hand tied behind my back, I’ve been inundated with freelance work and I’m not sure what my schedule will look like come comp time. Of course I’m hoping for the best and I look forward to standing tall with my fellow Game Artisans on D day! It first DW for me and I recently was connected. Tell me, how long it lasts, and what theme will be. Or it is not yet known? And if it will be known, where it will be possible to find?
Because, having seen all about last year's DW, I have found everything about DW, except for term of tournament.

As for your questions. It lasts month or two unless I remember wrong. The theme isn't yet known, but FredH has hinted the timeframe is now completely different. The last two DWars have been future, so it probably is past related, maybe medieval, or fantasy, or stoneage (which I doubt though :D).

The Dominance War website will include the info when it comes up, I'm guessing it'll be announced at the start day, which is shown as timer in the DW website :)

Term of tournament? If I'm guessing right what you mean... The terms are, you read forum introductions and guides (all forums get different kind of topic. Like last year others made full organics, some made half organics and one team made fully inorganics) and after you've decided, you make a post in the forum of your choosing and register in the DomWar website and then you're good to go :)

Some people decide forums even before they know topics, its really about personal preference. I like GameArtisans the most, so I'm most likely staying here. Unless FredH, Marcus, Poop, Cooke or some other angry moderator/admin kicks me out ;)

Of course I'm going to win! but that's not my maintarget for this competition. I want to show to you and to myself what I'm able to and - besides creating the character - I plan to write a little testcentral for my character based on XNA and get it on the xbox360. ironbearxl, I don't think there are any dominance war tutorials. You would have to read the brief for the previous two wars, look at the entries, and take your best guess as to how this new war will run. I believe Fred mentioned something about simplifying the rules, so DW3 should be easy to understand once it comes out... crosses fingers:D

Now, I don't even know how to find the forums at that Chinese community, let alone follow any interesting discussions there without using a babelfish that gives me stuff like "our communication feeds arbitrarily on highlight voyeur perspective - conundrum, back again facing constant obstacle."

Not really complaining, just voicing a newbie concern :P

Some news...

There are some problems with the Chinese forum. It might take a while before it picks up there. So let's use this to our advantage:D On the other hand, the russian forum, cgtalk.ru, is going full sail into this competition. They are getting magazine support, game companies support, and they will even do something in their Russian game developers conference just for Dominance war. Then there is the Korean site, cgland.com. They are building a forum just for dominance war, and they are getting a lot of support too..

It will be interesting to see how things play out this year. I think the four forums from last year have a significant advantage because they are already familiar with the rules and how the competition system works. There won't be any hesitation by vets this year as they will surely jump into their entries to insure they finish on time and in style.

Anyways, it's going to be a blast!

Well I supose de DW system wil be like GA system, where we can click on a thumbnail on DW site and it redirects us to the topic of the specific entry.
Once inside the topic we can see the images showing the progress, since images aren't language specific, they are universal.
I just expect the images posted on this topics could be watched not only by members, but by visitors too.
