Adding color to a model

Ok first of all i wish to thank in advance anybody that can help me. Ok here it goes. I have made my first model in maya and now wish to color it what do i have to do?

Are you asking how to apply a material and texture to the model or how to paint directly on the model?

I wish I could help, but I am a 3dsmax user.

I did a brief search on 3dtotal.com for maya tutorials on texturing, but I couldn't find anything good. There are a few good ones for 3dsmax though.

All 3d programs are basically the same. Once you have finished your model, you need to apply a black and white checkered texture onto your model, and then piece by piece, you can begin unwrapping it. The checkered pattern acts as your reference. If you can make each box a perfect square, then your uv's are perfect.

Once you are done with your uv's, then you can finally begin texturing. Simply export your uv layout or just take a screen grab of your uvs, and then bring this flat wire image into photoshop. When you are finally in photoshop, paint a stroke, save a copy of the file as a png, and then apply this texture sheet to your model.

These are just the basics. I am sure if you do a google search for maya texturing tutorials, you will find plenty of more qualified reference:thumb:
