Creepy looking sketch so far ThatDon. It’s funny because my character is going to have some of these attributes as well so I’ll be following this thread pretty closely. I can’t wait to see more!

Got some time to work on the concept.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/JohnyKnoxville/vesuvusR-1.jpg

The black parts are obsidian shards!

Hopefully I will get another pass on this before I start the modeling.

C&C is more than welcome ;)

I'm liking the concept & the contrast between the craggy rock face & the obsidian. my suggestion might be just to play that up a little bit more. You might already be intending to do that? Right now it's just a little sparse. If you were to play it up a little as either sort of musculature outline or as some sort of armor plating (sort like the redesign of Sunfire (http://www.bigmonkeycomics.com/data/XMEN184_col.jpg) with Marvel's Age of Apocalypse)?
and is the lava going to be dripping of him? as the cracks kind of seem like they continue from the flow of his head & it might just add for a nice little added detail. maybe other caldera's along his body? like two small rows going down his back on either side?
just some suggestions! can't wait for the progress on him!

Don! Thats pretty...rockin'. Hahahahaha...ha. That is friggin solid. Warning, Critiques. Have you considered beefing up the hips? Seems a mountain should have a firmer waist to mount it's erupting head. Maybe bigger chunks and forearms? Egh, I dunno. Pretty awesome, thats all I could think off. Rock On.

Glad you brought back the lava. Man this model deserves some animation magic! I would love to see how the lava oozes and pulses over his body. Ooooh! And the smoke and fire spouting from his head would be friggin' sweet!

Concept's looking really cool man

FredH
04-24-2007, 01:03 PM
I agree with kipiripi, if you can put a touch of civilization on him, this would be so cool. Check the image attached to this post.

Besides this, a few bright orange highlights on his lava viens might help make them look more like flowing streams. Right now, it looks a little too lazer like.

REally nice concept man! Good form, good pose, and great attitude! Can't wait to see more!

BiG ToE --> You know, I can't remember where I got the image from:brick: I was doing a google search for contests I think, and I found this image on one of the sites. Let this be a warning to artists out there, always put your website, name or email on your final images so that others can find your work:p

I think you mean humanoid? Because "rock like" is technically still organic.

FredH

strange, I missed this one:inocent:

This is looking really good man. In terms of skill, oh my, you are advancing quickly. If there is one thing that can maybe make him look better, it's putting more sharp rock-like angles on him. Right now, he is so smooth and curved that he is loosing his rocky feeling. His chest looks a bit flimsy too. Chests demands the biggest sized rocks for chest muscles. The pebble-like chest you have going right now is giving him a weak look. Look at this concept here (taken from another member in this comp hehe:p)

He put the biggest rocks for this beasts under chest. I think it instantly makes this creature look strong and fierce.
http://www.cabertevon.com/gameartisan/sapat.jpg

I think the rock surface used is similar to this one:
http://www.friedmanarchives.com/National%20Parks/images/Rocky%20Cliff8x12%20300%20dpi.jpg

Nice work otherwise man. You are doing a great job!

This is marvellous! I like the idea. I'd probably try to make him very unsimmetrical since rocks or mountains don't tend to have any symmetry.
Anyway, awsome man!

the arms remind me of the Dom War champion, this could be a good thing.

Socket7
05-08-2007, 04:35 PM
Good stuff! I just imagine how lava's flowing. :) But I would try to reshape his right half for example so he's not symmetrical at all. But it just my view you might not agree with. :)

Hehehe just noticed this contest, don't think i will have time to enter it myself. Model looks great but i would like to see the cracks between rocks more clearly defined. Keep it up dude, i look forward to seeing all of the finished models for this contest.

Muchomuchacho
05-11-2007, 03:26 PM
I was looking at your mudboxman and the arms are kinda the same thickness all the way down. It might be neat to have some smaller portions or more defined musculiture. Just thought I'd mention it. It is looking incredible, and I just try to throw even the littlest things at you. Rock on.

New Direction

Larger version here (http://upload8.postimage.org/318081/photo_hosting.html)

Antimagic
05-13-2007, 12:33 AM
This new direction is much much better. Breaking the symmetry was a marvelous idea. Perhaps if you leave a few areas 'unformed,' this could be interesting. Example, you can make his left foot just a round lump. It would look like he is coming out of rock and his foot never formed, so it's still in its basic shape. Just an idea;)

Back looks great btw. Really nice form happening here.

Marcus Dublin
05-14-2007, 09:49 AM
How many files do you save on average, I save at least 5 different max, psd, etc. files on multiple hard drives to avoid situations like this:cry: ! Hopefully you’ll be able to salvage something since your entry was coming along so well, sigh:( ! Good luck.

Marcus

BiG ToE
05-14-2007, 10:09 AM
I keep telling him to save out different files. I hope this is the last time Don, the last time.

FredH
05-14-2007, 12:07 PM
Ouch. That must seriously hurt:flag: When something like this happens, it's utterly depressing. Your last update looked really good. Do you have a sample of your last saved file?

Marcus --> Multiple photoshop files?? I have never in my life got a corrupt photoshop file. However, mudbox and 3dsmax is another story. I save a new file every time I hit save. Mudbox is the worst of them all. When it crashes, it takes my whole system with it (aka restart computer). I always cringe when opening mudbox and I have to save every other file in every other program I have open.

Muchomuchacho
05-16-2007, 10:00 AM
Have you considered more definition in the arms? The way they stay the same consistent thickness doesn't really Roger my Hammerstein. I love his feet though, and the face just keeps getting better.

Final Highpoly

FredH
05-17-2007, 03:54 PM
Nice to see that you didn't loose inspiration after your mudbox collapse. You came back with double strength, this is looking great! ...except the mid section. The non-continuous lines look like a virus or some form of a bacterial infection.

In your previous one here (http://upload8.postimage.org/334328/photo_hosting.html), the lines just above his hip looked like veins or roots or strands of rock mixed with earth (ie, softer rock). If you can recapture this feeling, your model would be done:)

ThatDon
05-17-2007, 04:00 PM
I totally see what you're saying FRED, it's like looking through a microscope. I will get right on that, thank goodness that's a easy fix!

BiG ToE
05-17-2007, 05:34 PM
in your final render, make sure you make him look bigger than what you got in your last update.

If he is to represent a volcano, he needs to have the size of one. Big like Montain, not, small like foot-hill.

It was great to see this creature take shape through much iteration and that all of the hard work you put in thus far pay off! Now this is just round one, try and put the same care and attention to detail into the model and texture and you have a potential winner on your hands!

EVIL
05-23-2007, 01:54 AM
having played a bit in zbrush 3, I can tell you that you can do alot more to your model to give it a more rocky look.. its all in the details with a giant like this.. you need to make everything look like its really a mountain.. and not just a piece of clay thats 6 inches tall.
