man my jaw dropped when i saw the wallpapers awesome !
I guess u needed an extension Fred by seeing the artwork i knew it blow up hehe. Well the wait goes on. :)

FredH
04-30-2007, 04:42 PM
No, not everyone had time to make wallpapers, and since I didn't have much time to send invites, I only invited a few personal favorites to make wallpapers. The wallpapers shown are those who had some spare time and passed the selection process. There were a lot more fantastic entries... perhaps I will invite more soon.

So, basically, the winners can be anyone:)

Dhomochevsky
04-30-2007, 04:56 PM
but uhh.. i received an invite and didn't had time to make a decent one..
does it mean it can be added or i lost my occasion? :phew:

Too bad the site blew up :P

you work too hard FredH. but thanks anyways.

FredH
04-30-2007, 05:10 PM
yeah, it's unfortunate the site broke down. I wish dominance war didn't have to be the beta test site. But, the good news is, gameartisan's comp won't suffer the same problems hehe

Asmuel
04-30-2007, 06:35 PM
Those wallpapers arent neceserally what the finished products looked like, as they had a lot of extra time for wallpapers. Though many did finish well and didnt have to do much for wallpapers ie. Spacemonkey :thumb:

Oh yea, and Im pretty sure 2byts=cheater. I didnt want to say anything earlier because I didnt want to sound like an ass, and didnt think he would win anything anyway. He had a 75% complete character within like 24 hours of the breif being revealed, then it took him the rest of the comp just to texture, and made something that had nothing to do with CGSocietys brief. Was I the only one who noticed?

BiG ToE
04-30-2007, 08:22 PM
if that is the case, then someone(asmuel) should add that to the things to change for next comp thread.

Also, someone should add, enforcement of the rules, mainly the rule that stated, if you dont post updates, you can't enter. I saw a few guys on my side, just show up with a week to go acting like it was ok. They say, well I didn't think I was going to enter, but I finished in time, so here it is. Not cool, not cool. It was MADDNNEESSSS.

Asmuel
04-30-2007, 08:42 PM
Yea, I thought I was being slack with lack of updates. But then one dude on our side showed up from out of nowhere well over halfway throught the comp, and no-one complained :ack:. I didnt bother with much updates after that.

george.vas
05-01-2007, 12:24 AM

http://projectstealth.splintercellnetwork.com/index.php?topic=160.0

Seems to be some kind of incriminating evidence :uhh:

But seriously, cant have cheaters taking prizes away from other CGSociety entrants. Dont worry I didnt stay up all night snooping around, someone gave me the link after I mentioned I thought 2btys entry smelt fishy. If you check the dates he would have had the concept art, LP, MP and UV''s done before the competition started. And clearly the character was not designed for DomWar.

Im not calling for a DQ personally, unless he wins any prizes.

Asmuel
05-01-2007, 06:48 PM
Clearly not the best place to post that ^ but seeing as I mentioned it earlier in the thread I thought it might be a good idea

I don't know about you guys, but all entries were discussed with my friends. I seriously doubt Fred, an organizer and participant, was out of the loop on this one. Popping 3 full concepts out in 3 days, with the wrong topic no less, surely has not gone unnoticed.

It's a really nice entry though.

I vote for the Dominance War wheel of fortune.

Each year, the involved forums are asked to come up with a noun, adjective, or verb or and additional one if there are more than 3 forums.

DW mad libs.

Then the brief might be Samourai, magenta, bunny, kill.

None of this nebulous "might have been made 3 years ago as a portfolio piece" mess.

Although I had MANY parts and pieces I could have cannibalized I built my guy from scratch (post briefing)- down to the smallest rivet. Mostly because I am retarded.

But, I think a tighter brief will reduce bending or even breaking the rules.

But boxers are supposed to be healthier for the equipment.

Fred, would it be possible to consider removing his wallpaper that is up with the other entries, it seems like his spot should go to someone that did follow the rules, and not cheat ( which is seriously lame in my opinion ) So that another person could get some spotlight time? Thanks for considering the idea in advance.

Spark

05-03-2007, 06:48 PM
I agree with sparks, it looks like he has broke the rules and entered a model he was already working on. It certainly doesnt seem right to keep the model on the site now.

Wow.

Both in awe and elation.

I think one thing I said in my interview answers holds fast. You can't please everyone.

There were entries that I would have readily voted in front of my own, were I looking at these blindly, and admittedly some entries that would have never made my personal list.

But these judges were not slops, and to have made Kolby's list alone should make anyone really happy. ;)

I wish that CGCHAT could have pulled a war win, but what can man do against MACHINES?

I really don't know what else to say, other than-

wow.

And, Grudge got his revenge after all, even if a big metal mech automaton rose from the horizon and blasted him in the back when it was done. Hell, it eased his pain, anyway. :)

i think the voting system is weak..

the problem is, the "top 10" and the "forums top 3" hasn´t enough dependencys

it can reach from 100% if all forums top 3 are also in the top 5 one jury member chose
to 0% if none of them is in the top 5

in the end, this can cause the problem, that entry A ,compared to entry B, is placed higher in the top 3 BUT lower in the top 10

i think the best would be to take the forums top 3 out of the top 10
(they count more bc they are choosen out of all entrys) and only if
there are not enough forumentrys in the top 10 fill them with the jury´s top 3

i don´t want to piss of tbone.. in fact i´m not sure if he should be 9th instead of me or not.. wired?!?

BUT

i hope the voting system is changed for the next dom war!! :)

and i have to say i like the wallpaper section a lot more than the submissions page :p

EDIT: ohh i read now that fredh is already aware of this :D.. sorry

I just realised Vahl from polycount didnt get mentioned either!! I honestly think the whole judging thing needs to be looked at again, people invested huge amounts of effort into this comp, but the judging doesnt reflect that. Seems the judges didnt put much thought into their choices, and/or the judging process wasnt very well structured.

Sumea's competitions have a comprehensive points system, so the judges have to evaluate each artists work deeply looking at each aspect of it. No offense Fred, but really, the biggest game art comp ever on the net needs the best, most thought out judging. Im still not sure how Peppi got 5th, and 3dtotal won. Can someone explain?

^ In saying that, many people deserved to place where they did, congratulations to those and I sincerely hope you enjoy your prizes :) this years work rocked

Ah, how unpredictable art comps can be. Every time i enter one be it anything from chalk art to commercial art, you never can tell how the judges are feeling... It could all depend on what they had for lunch... That being said, amazing work everyone, and winners congratulations, go have a party! =)

I'm sorry how are you reconciling that argument? People put in a huge amount of effort..yes I agree.. now how exactly is the judging supposed to reflect that? Were the judges supposed to know how much effort people put in?

The judges didn't put much thought in their process, because what.. you don't agree with them.

If you enter a contest were the metrics are:
"Does your character look cool? Does your character look like he/she/it can easily destroy any form of opposition?"

You have to know that it is going to be a matter of the judges personal taste.
I don't think it is helpful to just flame on the judges and discount their efforts..

Well even if I do not agree with some choices, it is there choices. But might I suggest that maybe for the next competitions judges, it would be more aligned to people that do this type of work for the industry. Such as Kolby Jukes, who is a great choice, rather than the Producer for EA who didn't even have time to write up comments, and placed 5 for the same 1st prize? I for one, would be more apt to join the next Dominance War, if I knew that the judges knew more of what it took to complete the competition.

I'd have to agree with spark with the judges, its intresting to see there pics, but maybe a few more dudes that blow minds, and make stuff like: Meats Mier, Stalberg, Ben Regimbal, Krishnamurti Costa, Fasto De Martini, Kevin Lanning, Louis Lu. Character peeps from all around.

Other than that, mad props to those that made the tops.. watch your backs, cause i'm comin for your hands!

You made some great points Spark! I also wonder if the same panel of judges from last year had to vote this year would the results have even been close to what this new crop of judges made. Just a thought but I would love to see more of our peers i.e.: “character artist” judging next time around. I’m not sure if construction shots, sticking to the brief and a story were even necessary this year. You could have gotten away with just some concept art and the beauty shot. This is not surprising considering some of the heavy weights are concept artists. Just a thought!

Yeah I dont know why we had to wait so long for the judging. Some of those choices we're just dumb. Like Marcus said we really didnt need to show flats. For instance, Tucho's entry was inefficiently uvmapped and poorly textured. Yet some how he beats out lots of other great entries. Anyways its all water over the bridge or under the dam, or where ever you want it. Fred excellent job organizing everything that must have quite a job. Been a fun trip.

I would be cautious about ripping on the judges.

They made their decisions, and while I too disagree with some choices, I also disagree with the opinions of guys I have worked with for years. On multiple games. Such is the intangibility of aesthetic.

I do think the judge set for DW1 was a more "in the trenches" list of judges, and as such I think they made choices that reflected that, and probably aligned more with the expectations of the entrants. I definitely look at the choices this year and find that the guys doing this stuff day to day are the ones that I agree with most.

But those aren't always the guys hiring. You get my drift. :P

Well yea, there was alot of money riding on the competition, so decisions shouldnt be made lightly. And the judging system could have been better/clearer, they should have marked everything, Vahl didnt even get mentioned and his was clearly better than many peoples entry's who were mentioned, or were even ranked 1st by some judges. Spark made a good suggestion about choosing artists to judge, Kolby made some good choices.

Seriously should check out Sumea's ranking system for competitions, its a very comprehensive points system, but easy to follow.

some... bitter people.

Doesn't the results just prove that presentation and personal perference really count for a lot? This shouldn't surprise anyone in this industry.

On an indivdual basis I think I only really agreed with one of the judges.

However, their results compiled seems to be 'fair'... more or less. I think we should accept that even if a bunch of pro 3d character modelers were judging everything, that the results even then would have been a product of personal preference more than anything. The median result may not always seem 'correct' but they are fair.

Imo, with the exception of one piece which I think took the spot of more deserving work, everything up there really deserves recognition.
In that regards, the judges did their job right.

With any competition based partly on subjective appeal, only a small portion of the participants will agree with the judges' decisions, regardless of what those decisions are. I was surprised by some of the choices, I would have had some different winners, but then Fred didn't ask me to be a judge. I think we just have to take the results as a life lesson: competitions will often bring out (and reward) exceptional work, but like life, not everyone will be pleased.

As for my entry (http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/events/1/team3/preview_finals_1_63.html), I won nothing (except that Pascal Blanche ranked me third for Cg Society :D ) and I expected to win nothing, just way too much talent out there.

Thanks for running the show Fred, I bet it was as much a learning experience for you as it was for us. :thumb:

Miezis makes a good point..

As soon I saw andrew jones as a judge I knew the kind of work he would select. I KNEW EVIL would be one of them, and the abstract robot model.. I wasn't surprised by any of his choices.

If you spend any amount of time on tweak, you know the kind of work Kolby was going to pick. No surprises there..

But there were alot of judges there I didn't know, so all I could was try to hit the theme of the contest. When i saw those wallpapers go up that was it for me.. I chaulked it up as a learning experience, and moved on.

Overall this is a community building event.. your not going to build any bridges or network with your peers, if you just complain and degrade other peoples work. It is unprofessional.

Thanks a ton for organizing this Fred, you did a helluva job, and I appreciate it.

I think one thing that would definitely improve next years comp, like others have mentioned, is more focused judges. Yes the ones this year picked their favorites, and that is their right as the selected judges. However by selecting from such a broad base, it makes the finals almost completely random.

I think you could easily have next year's comp judged by peoples mothers, or taste-testing judges, and they'd pick their favorites, and you'd get a point based "fair" set of finalists, but it'd be very random, to say the least, and that's how this years results felt. I think having a character art comp judged by character artists is really the way to go.

Minor preferences aside, I think given time, these entries could very well be put in a reasonable scale from best to worst, by competent character artists. There might be some slight arguments on whether something is a 5th place, or a 6th place, but we wouldn't get characters that are almost unanimously agreed should be top 5, not even making it in any of the judges mention.

I forget if it was you Fred, or not, but I liked the suggestion of each forum doing an internal vote of their top 10 (or 20) to send on to the final comp. That way you have a mass of real-time content-creation peoples narrowing it down. Then have just 4 or 5 professional, top-tier-talent character artists going over the finalists, and trying to vote for more than five places. I'd prefer they vote for 20, in the order they like them (with no divisions based on forums).

I just think that you can separate the outrage from some people being upset their personal entry didn't place, and still see enough people who legitimately feel that the final results were off by a lot, to use as a barometer for how the judging went. Last year I think most people felt fairly satisfied with the rankings, and couldn't argue too much. This year it seems like a lot of WTF moments all around.

Even though I agree with Asmuel regarding some issues of the votes and judges's decision, I even agree more with Anole and Coldkodiak that it's best not to rant online. Ranting should go into it's own special thread.

May I suggest that perhaps we should just post a small disclaimer/ note before joining the comp to remind people to stay professional in a friendly community competition.

poopinmymouth --> You should post this in the suggestions and comments thread. There has been a discussion on new judging methods and we narrowed it down to what I think, is a very good method.

There will be a 3-4 eliminations process when the war ends. Every week, the entries will be cropped until finally, only the pure best remain. (this is the short version:) )

Otherwise, glad you enjoyed the war. It was a blast:)

In response to people that encouraged my disqualification without at least telling me:

I started when the competition was announced on CG Talk, which was 3-4 days before the official opening date. I hardly consider that an advantage when the deadline was extended considerably while I was on holidays for 2 weeks.

And as far as speed is concerned, I am currently on a project where I have to model and texture 12 characters in 3 weeks. Having a standardized base mesh that is intended for customizing on a per character basis is a normal workflow for any artist. This part of the pipeline does not take more then a couple days. To say that I had a 75% character finished within 24hrs is rubbish and you certainly dont have any proof of that. Texturing and Hi Res modelling easily take up more then half of production time when working at 2k res. A low poly mesh doesnt take more then a day to create in a studio pipeline...and how long does it take to subdivide and harden some edges?

This of course allowed me to spend more time on texturing because thisproject was my first experience with mudbox. I actually did 3 different versions of this character while still learning the software.

And as far project stealth was concerned, DM was finished so I decided to make it public that I wanted to use this character for a personal non-profit Mod project. Who is to say other people in the competition will not do that for Doom-Unreal-Quake games now that the competition is finished?

I dont expect anything to change now, but there is honour involved.

Peace and love guys :)

First I think the descison of Judges are done and are definitive.

The thing that your are saying could be a point to clarify for the DW III
http://www.gameartisans.org/forums/showthread.php?t=142

And I ever thought of that, and would tell it to Fred,
Why not make Deadline by categories in the Contest.

for exemple:
Sketch deadline
Lowpoly dead line -> but here we have a problem because some people started by the High mesh. So we could make a simple deadline to see the progress of your entries.

Then the entries would be OK, and there will be no cheats no ones to cry for cheaters.

FredH
05-11-2007, 03:49 PM
2byts --> The problem is, it takes each artist a few days to think up an idea, another few days to make sketches and concepts, and then another few days to come up with a base mesh. If you created your base mesh before the comp started, you have also come up with the idea and initial concepts too. Furthermore, people were telling you in your cgsociety thread, that your character did not fit the brief for domwar. You chose to ignore them. There is nothing that can be done now.

Everything(thoughts, sketches, concepts, and models) must be originally made for domwar. I am really sorry that you didn't know this. I can see that this was one big misunderstanding. Everyone makes mistakes. Regardless, you did a great job on your model and you were an inspiration to many artists in the comp! Hope you will be back next year.

Lol. When I say I should have been mentioned blah blah, I meant I would have appreciated feedback, not that I deserved a placing. I meant it would have been better it more people were given feedback, if not everyone. I could have explained this about 1000 times better, oh well, thats my bad. Wasnt intended to be a arrogant flame, but my explanation was so poor it ended up being one. I already said sorry to the people I mentioned.

But yea I never asked for your advice, its not needed or wanted. I could flame your work in return, but that would be childish.

@ 2byts

yea perhaps I should have contacted you, or someone else should have. I was not the only one who noticed as others from your team contacted me suggesting I should post about your character being designed for another project. I said myself you shouldnt get DQ'd, because I dont think you were given a huge advantage either, unless perhaps if you win for the sake of the people who followed the rules. But yea if you break the rules thats it I guess, If your given leniency then it gets real dodgy defining what is a significant advantage. Gotta be real careful and read the all rules thoroughly.

But yea on the upside your character turned out great, you're works all over the net and you've probably learnt a few lessons as have I.
