Ok here's a sketch with some quick colors and a some background story:

Once upon a time an evil demon was sealed inside a tree. Unfortunatly the tree grew right above the dead shell of an ancient giant spider. The spirit of the demon took possession of the spider which is now roaming the earth bringing destruction wherever it goes.

i'm digging the idea & i really like the lines going from the ankles to the trees. are they going to be like those himalayan prayer flags? because i thought that would always be cool if it was used to a negative effect! anyway, nice take!

It reminds me why a spider is creepy.

Nice start! I really like where you are going with this, but I was just wondering if there was a way you can portray the demon possession a bit more? You got the magic seal stamps... this is always a great touch. However, what if you carried it a bit further. Perhaps a demonic carving on the tree? Or maybe shape the tree's branches in a real menacing demon-like fashion. You got a great base going on here, just needs a little something to make it clear in everyone's minds, what's going on. Besides this, everything else is looking great!

Can't wait to see more!

kurocrash: yes it's supposed to be like those flags. I'm abit worried that they might restrict the movement of the legs to much but I'll work it out somehow.

FredH: Thanks for the advise. I made a quick sketch of a more possessed looking tree. I actually think it's a bit overdone but I'll start with the spider anyway so I still have a bit time to think about the tree.

Here's the current progress of the model. The tree is still very unfinished and the triangle count is already pretty high but theres also lots of stuff I can optimize. The back seemed a bit empty to me so I put a small graveyard there. That also helps to recognize the size of the spider. At least imo.

I really like the idea of the graveyard, good call on that.

I too like the idea of the graves, but unless the player is on a hill, or flying he/she won't be able to see it that well.

Nearly finished the lowpoly model.
Vikkie: If this was a boss in some game you could make it the boss tactic to get behind the spider and climb on the back to attack the tree. Of course there would be skeletons spawning everywhere.
