The first sketch is a really great study!

As for the environment I can't really read what it is. Even though it's night, objects become brighter the further away they get due to aerial atmosphere. Thus will the objects near the viewer be darker. This is a great way of adding better readability to an image. Also using gradients in the sky is an easy way of directing the viewers eye. You need to 'pop' the sky from the ground, using gradients and aerial atmosphere. That is contrast. Contrast is important to establish a good balance in the picture. Compositional wise it works very good as the rule of thirds.

Anyway, I would love to see more studies and speed sketches. Let it flow.
