I was thinking about how 3D artist never really get to show off there work in its "true" form unless its in a game or something similar. Also about how much it would help artists show off there work if they had a safe way of doing so.
so heres the idea:
An editor type App that lets you import your model and all the maps with it. you can select which effects to use (EX: motion blur, bloom, etc.) Allow the option of music files, background images, 2D screen overlays (for like titles or to say who the art is by) Then after all the editing is done you would click a compile button witch would encrypt all your media into one safe .exe that you can have for download on your sites. It would open as a viewer and they would be able to rotate, zoom, pan, etc around your art in 3d.
so......eh?

I'd rather not have to download a load of potentially virused exe's when we already have 3d viewing apps for net browsers.
I like the idea of it but until the technology great and free screenshots, in-game camera runs and video will rule...

BuroKun - I quite agree, another thing too be asked for was uncomplicated app, even if it exported as a SWF or such even avi rotation exporting, then again finding someone too make an app like this... although there are other solutions that can be used, most everyone still would probebly end up jsut doing standerd 2d renders, just more conveniant I guess.
LowRez - Invest in decent virus software, I stopped being paranoid about viruses software a decade ago. and yes youc an get web apps that can do it but I never see anyone use those, redundent? or just too complicated for anyone to even bother on using?

even with decent virus software, you are still at risk for downloading viruses and being attacked, the point that low rez is trying to make is that a lot of people don't want to download an .exe file and run it on their computer from some unknown source. I also think that while it doesn't sound like too much work to open up the file I think people would find it much faster and easier just to look at the picture in browser. Now if you had a full 3d rotation in browser that worked with a plugin, (which can be done) that would be safer but you run into the problem again that people probably wouldn't want to take the time to download another plugin unless it became really mainstream and used by a lot of artists. It is a pretty good idea I just don't think people would use it to view your work very often.

It breaks down at "viewer with all the maps", since the types of maps you have will be very dependent on the shaders you are running. Unless you are talking about the usual setup of diff+spec+normal+etc. but that implies a viewer of limited use.
I would like to see a branch of FX composer minus the editing parts. Just load a model, shader, and maps. Throw lights in the scene, play animations...Throw in a secure package format and I'm sold.
