Backstory:
Not much is known bout this creature. it comes from depths of the deep serbian seas. legend has it that it only awakes every 200 years for feeding frenzie. some say its a mutated fish, some say its been here on earth since the beggining of time.
heres my concept so far. the concept for me was to combine couple of animals/mamals w/e you want to call them into one giant sea creature.only thing i might change is the mouth/head area, make it a lil longer like an alligator.suggestions are more than welcome as usual. ingore the lame name hehe couldn't think of anything other than that.
sorry for the crappy digital camera taken picture lol

i like the concept... but that name? i saw it & got my hopes up. i thought you were doing some sort of gigantic take on wally gator (http://images.google.com/images?q=wally+gator&hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=kMC&um=1&sa=X&oi=images&ct=title) lol

I really like the face, but I think that the tail really needs some work on it, I would make it more like the body, fatter or you might make the body slimer to give it a faster look. You might also want to put a short tail instead of a really long one. I like the horns around the face, but once you start making it 3d you should make them more pronounced, maybe like a battering ram in case there is something in his way when he swims. I really like the small crystals on his back but I really dont know what those big crystals next to the tail are. You might want to make it a building or a cave or a city so that people have a reference even though you already have those whales. I would also work on the back fins since it looks out of place on such a huge monster. Overall I would say that it has potential to become quite a huge monster.

great, I really like that fat bastard :)
but I have to agree, that the tail needs some work. Maby try some sealion tail?

This could turn out to be really awesome if pulled of right, the silhouette for this guy screams giant sea creature. The bottom horns on his mouth are a bit too far up; they should be fitting much closer to his jaw. Hopefully we can see a model soon!:)

hey guys, thanks for the comments. those things on the back are actaully suppose to be some sort of rocks , i never thought bout it as crystals but now that you mentioned it  , i might stick with that. i always imagined this creature living at the bottom of the ocean in some rocky undersea environment so thats what i was trying to do with those things on his back.i am gonna change the tail shape once i get to modeling it, and also those things on his tail are suppose to be sharp edgy horns for stabbing his enemies like a mace lol .hopefully i'l have time to finish this competition. really appreciate the feedback:thumb:
anywho, heres a little update

The face structure is looking good. It's still hard to see how this will look when finished, but you are certainly going in the right direction:)

ok so i have been testing out some normal maps and im stuck. when i go to high quality in maya viewport, the normal map shows up fine, but when i render it out using maya software or mental ray the whole thing screws up. looks nothing like in high quality preview:brick: . does anyone know how to actually render out a normal map in maya?

Render in hardware mode or google up the fancy pants shader network to render in mental gay.

ah man that totally worked, thanks ThatDon. spent all day looking for plug-ins for maya normal map rendering lol. i'l probably re do the high poly but im not sure where to take it. iv been looking at walruses, whales, aligators for detail reference but im not so sure. any suggestions?

Maya's Software render needs allot of tweaking. Your hardware render will look good though but I am sure that's not what you want. Their was a good shader to help with this for Maya 7 but I noticed your using 8 and it doesn't work with 8 so that wont help you. Mental Ray is the way to go but it too needs allot of tweaking.

ok well heres a little update on the normal map issue. iv tested out the JSNormalMapper for maya software render and it gives me decent results. i tried the one for mental ray but i got some errors. the hardware one worked but it looked kinda crappy. now i can finish up the sculpt and move onto textures

messing round with textures. still having normal map problems, ahh well, stupid maya:doh:

you might want to try awsome Max, it's awsome.

i'm having a lot of the same maya problems too actually, but i was beginning to think it was my video card. still do as JSnormalmapper didn't give me those same kind of results.
you're probably just still starting the process but i'd extend that belly bit onto the back a little more so there's a more gradual shift between the back & underbelly areas.

ok so i managed to submit this in time altho i completely rushed everything in the last minutes and not too happy with the winning pose. the winning pose kinda screwed me over along with maya's normal mapping issues(maya hardware not looking good if the human is in the shot along with the landscape). bah.. oh well, at least i learned alot during this competition
anywho, good luck to everyone in the competition:thumb:
